A very old and beautiful church in Colaba. Attended Sunday mass. Lots of beautiful paintings are on the ceiling depicting various scenes from the bible . Its very difficult to take your eyes off the paintings n finally you stop once your neck starts paining due to looking up for a long time. Beautiful statues are also there.

In the busy Mumbai city sandwiched between Nariman point and the Gateway of India there is a quiet and silent road called Woodhouse road (named after PG woodhouse relation). In that road is quiet silent but imposing Church called the Cathedral of the Holy Name . It is a Roman Catholic cathedral and the seat of the Archbishop of Bombay .It Is more than 100 years old. One of the most beautiful churches in western India. Its Frescoes on the ceiling of the Cathedral is very lively. In fact your neck pains, because there is so much to see. It window panes are beautifully stained glass.
Their stations of the cross photographs around the church are hand painted and are priceless. Every interior part of the church is hand painted. It is clean and well maintained
Its white marble altar with its decorative design is really an artist delight. On the side of the pillar are the statues of different saints... its spiral steps to the choir loft is indeed beautiful.
It is known for its frescoes, pipe organ, a large gold embroidered stole gifted by Pope John XXIII, and another by Pope Pius XII containing the red hat given to Cardinal Valerian Gracias, and a bell gifted by Pope Paul VI during the 38th International Eucharistic Congress held in Mumbai in 1964.
It is one of the two more known cathedrals in the city, the other being the older, Anglican, Cathedral of St. Thomas the Apostle..
If it all one visit Mumbai, then this church is a must see along with the gateway of India.
It is one of the few churches in India where there is a daily afternoon mass at 1.15 pm mostly for the office goers of that area (colaba to nariman point)

Very beautiful church.
The interior and the architecture of the church are worth having a look.
This is also the place where the Archbishop of Mumbai formally celebrate the Eucharistic Services.
Holy Father Pope Francis has now declared that the Doors of the Cathedral is also theHoly Doors of Mercy along with Mount Mary Church at Bandra.
Untill now the Holy Doors of Mercy was limited to the church doors at the Vatican City.
The Doors of Mercy is considered to be opened once in 50 years.
Walking through these doors are asking for remission of Sins.
Truly blessed to walk through these doors.

The Cathedral has wonderful architecture and is open an hour before services are scheduled. For timings check their notice board, located outside the Cathedral at the entrance steps next to the bell presented by the Pope. Daily Masses and extra services on Sundays. The Parlour is usually manned and during weekend masses, the small gift shop is open.

What can I say about the Cathedral of the Holy Name... I personally found very nice this very pretty little church located in the heart of Colaba, I have been so lucky to get here and participate in real time at the Mass. The church is not that big, but inside were grouped very faithful who listened to the Mass in english, although the signs outside showing the daily schedules of the mass for which the service was activated daily at approximately 5:30 pm
Maybe worth going here just for curiosity or for those who are Catholics attend Mass in english.

The Cathedral of the Holy Name, sometimes referred to as Holy Name cathedral was built a little over a hundred years ago. In 1964 the church was elevated to become a cathedral.
The cathedral is on a road just behind Colaba Causeway, near what is called Regal circle. The cathedral has a pretty structure and interior. There is a school just near it.

Designed by architect W.A. Chambers, it was completed in Jan 1905. In March 1964, the church was designated a cathedral. Inside the church do not miss the frescoes on the ceiling and walls by A. Moscheni of Bergamo. The marble altar is richly decorated and so is the pulpit. The church is in one of the bylanes of the busy Colaba district and you will find peace and serenity here.
