This is an ancient historical little town situated on a hill with a famous sanskrit acadamy. Accomodation here is very basic but the temples are worth visiting. If you are in the vicinity, worth a visit.

It is a good place to visit which have good sceneries . it will take approximately 1 to 1-1/2 hours from mandya. last bus from madya is at 5-30Pm where it will reach there at 6-45pm the same bus will wait for around 20 minute...More

Yes you can drive till the steps. And yes there is a doli service to carry the people who cannot climate the steps.

There are couple of Mess at Melkote and they provide a very homely food. One is Subbanna Mess and the other one is also next to it. very homely south indian food is available which is suitable for children also.
