This journey was akin to the one we took in Darjeeling, on the heritage toy train, however this was longer. We decided to travel from Kalka to Shimla on the Shivalik Deluxe Express. It starts at 5.30 am from Kalka and we barely made it on time as the train is extremely punctual. The journey through the beautiful valleys was... More

Must get a window seat. Stunning views over the valleys of the Himalayan foothills. You feel time has stopped here. Also great for people watching - mainly locals travel on this line. Watching the buzz of the stations is quite thrilling.

I have wanted to travel on the toy train ever since first watching Michael Palin's "Himalaya" some years ago. It's was a really wonderful experience and everything I expected. The trains are cramped and narrow. The seats are hard and close together. You will be travel back in time to colonial India while you wend your up the mountain to... More

We chose Shivalik Deluxe to go from Kalka to Shimla. The train was extremely clean. Started at the right time. You can buy some paper and other picnic items such as biscuits etc from Kalka as on the way ahead not much variety is available. The train maintains a good enough speed for you to relax on those high altitudes.... More

Best way to travel to and from Shimla but only if you love trains and do not mind sitting in cramped space. the scenery is just amazing and shows you how much India has to offer in terms of natural beauty. All the stations on the way to Shimla were the cleanest I saw in India and that is what... More

I travelled in 2 toy trains. One is rail motar and the other is shivalik deluxe. The journey from rail motar was just awesome.its just like a mini bus. With capacity of 15passengers only. Driver's nature was too good. It also reached on time. But in shivalik its totally opposite. There were much more passengers than the capacity. They were... More
