Although late for both journeys the train was a great experience. Winding it's way up the hillsides through 103 tunnels and endless bridges. Fantastic scenery as you slowly leave the valleys below. Great for any train enthusiast.

The Kalka-Shimla toy train is a nice experience if you have never been on a toy train before. You get to have some nice pictures peeking out of the windows! Took the shivalik exp from Shimla. The Shimla station is a very small place with a tiny platform, 10-15 mins walk from the mall. The narrow gauge track runs through numerous tunnels and forested areas. There are many small picturesque stations in between. The train took 5 hours to reach kalka. The views were good and joinery was comfortable. But... More

We didn't have reserved seats but for 50 rupees each we had tickets for unreserved carriage. We fought the scrum to get a seat and managed to get two. The seats were basic, but at least a seat, but after a 5 hour slog up the hill we were numb!! Spectacular views though.

The journey from kalka to shimla has taken almost 6 hours and it was a long tiring journey where we felt hungry but there were no food vendors where we could nibble anything
