Mirza Ghalib is the biggest name in Persian and Urdu poetry and he is an icon of literary excellence. He lived in 19th century and had happened to see the difficult days of 1857 revolt. He had been a big poet and for sometime he was poet laurete in the court of Bahadur Shah Zafar. Aristocratic in taste and living style he had to undergo lots of difficulties because of the difficult times he lived. He survived the massacre after recapture of Delhi in 1857 by the British and died in 1869. Ghalib was buried in Nizamuddin Basti and after independence a tomb and memorial for him was created. Today a full functioning Academy is there to promote Ghalib, poetry, literature and culture of his time. This academy was inauguratd in 1969 by President of India Zakir Hussain 100 years after his death. Today it has a good auditorium, a good library and a museum in memory of Ghalib, the ultimate in poetry.

Growing up in India in the 1940`s to 1970`s Mirza Ghalib ruled the roost in India`s literary circles to Bollywood Hindi movies who was very often quoted. So one had to have an idea of Mirza Ghalib`s poetry &` Sher Shiyari`s` otherwise one was regarded as illiterate & culturally backward!.He was the court poet in the Durbar of the last Moghul king Bahadur shah Zafar wherein he drew a monthly pension which was discontinued with the British rule.He had many publications to his credit during his lifetime but with the cessation of pension by the British he passed through severe financial difficulties. This academy was inaugurated on his 100th Birthday by the then president Dr Zakir Hussain in 1969 in Hazrat Nizamuddin next to the sufi saint`s mousolium.I visited this place to pay my tributes to this great Indian poet who held such a prominent place in the thoughts & minds of all Indians in my time by his writings in prose & poetry. There is a Art gallery which has paintings of Satish Gujral,MF Hussain etc.The Academy is doing good work for the promotion & reviving of Urdu language all over India,a language which appears to be slowly dying. It also has an audotorium, research & referral library, promotes & teaches calligraphy & Urdu typewriting etc.It is doing some good work which made my visit satisfactory.
