- 463AKPPalo Alto, California11 contributionsToo many sales assistants & high pricesAgreed with other reviewers comments on higher prices: how much higher depends on where you're flying from and whether you had an opportunity to buy it before flying to Delhi. In August 2021, a bottle of Dalmore single malt was $65-$70 in the US (Bevmo or similar retailer), $80 at San Francisco duty free, and $85 at Delhi duty free. Also, unlike at other duty free shops where you are generally left alone, at Delhi there was far too many sales 'assistants' who accosted you as soon as they saw that you picked up something to purchase - and pointed you to all kinds of deals you were not interested in - all the way to the payment counter. Something like going to a tourist spot and being surrounded by hawkers. It wasn't unpleasant, but was unnecessary.Visited August 2021Written October 31, 2021
- Arup GKolkata (Calcutta), India583 contributionsOver priced and fraudulent.Delhi Duty Free Services Pvt Ltd. (DDFS) is owned by the Delhi airport developers themselves and the company has a monopoly over duty free alcohol, perfumes, chocolates etc across T3 of Delhi airport. There are a couple of large adjacent outlets at Arrivals and Departures each. Then there are a few smaller outlets nearer the departure gates. DDFS fully leverages its monopoly status and I will share how. But a bit of background is in order. Background: I have been traveling internationally for about 55 years and through Delhi's international airport for about 30 years now. There was a time when there would be multiple duty free outlets at Delhi airport. Shops operated by the State owned ITDC, Flemingo and one or two others. That was the time when Delhi's duty free merchandise was cheapest amongst any airport anywhere. When the new terminal was built, some of the old shops opened in the new location. But they all closed down in a year or so. DDFS has had a monopoly since then. But even in its "monopolist" avatar, in the initial years Delhi's duty free shopping was still rather good. Competitive prices and excellent service. Prices have inched upwards over the past 2 years. "Smart" sales tactics started being implemented concurrently. As a result, Delhi's duty free is today amongst the most expensive with the smartest push sales, bordering on the fraudulent. Ambiance: The good aspect is the spacious retail area. Nice display. Most goods arranged by theme or category. Plenty of smartly attired sales staff. Quick check out. The shopping areas are very conveniently located just after Security at Departures and right after Passport Control at Arrivals. Overall a pleasant shopping ambiance. Prices and "Smart" selling: The duty free outlets at Departures first. The moment you arrive at the shops you see large signs how Delhi is cheaper than Heathrow and a few other airports. Comparative prices of popular brands of alcohol would be displayed. Plenty of other signage offering promotion prices, free gifts etc. Many gullible customers wouldn't have first hand experience of current prices at those foreign duty free locations and hence there would be no reason to doubt those large prominent "Cheapest" prices! The duty free shopping at Arrivals is a different story. None of those "Cheapest" signage! Customers would be arriving from those "expensive" airports! A bit difficult to con such customers, isn't it? The trick here is however push sales coupled with the fact that for arriving travelers this is the last option to buy "duty free". Bad luck if you have not picked up your duty free quota of alcohol at Dubai or Abu Dhabi or Istanbul or Doha or Singapore. All cheaper than Delhi. That leads me to a comparison of the actual prices. In mid June '15, I traveled from Athens to Aubu Dhabi to Delhi. Far as I recall, an 1 litre bottle of Johnny Walker Double Black was retailing for EUR 40 (USD 45) at Athens duty free, for AED 150 (USD 41) at Abu Dhabi and for USD 49 at Delhi. Let's take another example. Duty paid, high street retail price of a 750 ml (sometimes 700 ml) bottle of Caol Ila (12 yr old) in several European countries would be around EUR 55 (USD 65). But at our "cheapest" Delhi duty free it was was USD 71. To be fair, a duty paid 750 ml (sometimes 700 ml) bottle of Jack Daniels (Old No. 7) retails for EUR 32 (USD 36) in many European cities and here at Delhi a 1 lt bottle was selling for USD 33. That's fair price but not "cheapest". I have bought a similar bottle at USD 29 at Korea in Nov last year and we all know alcohol prices don't go up that fast. My experience with fragrances was even more disappointing. Most fragrances (EDT as well as EDP) was 20% to 80% more expensive than what we can buy in India from online retailers like Flipkart or Snapdeal. I did buy a bottle of Dior and regretted later. Glad that I returned home and ordered online the rest of what I wanted. Paying INR without worrying about exchange rates! Finally chocolates. A 500 gm pack of several small Toblerone Fruit n Nut chocolate bars was USD 21 (INR 1350). In India we can buy 200 gm bars of the same chocolate for INR 500 approx. Clearly the "duty free" prices are more. Same experience with two other brands of chocolate. Service and Staff: The moment you walk into the retail area you are approached by multiple staff. Everyone wanting to help. You feel rather hassled. You have to curtly shoo them away to get a bit of privacy to look at the products at your own pace. When you do seek their help, they will push for more expensive larger bottles of fragrance, trying to convince you how much more you would gain. They will try to push the more expensive chocolates. They will try to convince you to buy two bottles of alcohol so that you can get a free gift (mostly cheap bags/strolleys). Not pleasant. Conclusion: For 30 odd years I have picked up my duty free quota from Delhi, after returning from my trips abroad. Certainly some 30 odd trips during that period. Possibly 40 odd trips. Elsewhere was always expensive. The tables are now fully turned. I would never again shop at the Delhi Duty Free outlets of DDFS.Visited June 2015Traveled as a coupleWritten June 19, 2015

AVOID.
Prices were double that of Australian local prices, which include duty and taxes.
You'd be mad to buy here!
After I complained about getting ripped off, it's been 3 months and lots of emails but they still don't understand. They sent me a link to a different product at Dan Murphy's and then said;
"May be there is a confusion about the prices, May be the page of website was not updated that time due to the lockdown and It showed you the old price / offers .
Delhi Duty Free value our customers and will not do the same for anyone .
There was a confusion , Hope this clarifies your doubt . As it was sorted , Hence closing . Stay safe and Stay at Home. "

I selected 2 bottles of Oban on sale at INR 11,220after reviewing the products and offers by the sales staff who was very helpful.
However when I went to the check out I was presented an invoice for 11,700 and after pointing out that this was higher than the display price, the staff and manager insisted on charging me the higher price. Such price gouging is unacceptable from an international retailer of repute and worse, after pointing it out, no one including the duty manager was able to fix the issue.

It was supposed to be the simple purchase of chocolates, but when I reached the payment counter, the cashier made on offer of miniature alcohol bottles at "low prices". He said that alcoholic beverages had been banned by the Indian government on all out-bound flights but miniatures could be taken on board. This struck me as extremely suspicious.
Needless to say, drinks WERE available on my flight. The cashier was clearly trying to push up sales to earn a higher commission. Conning customers is not the way.
Noting the high number of complaints here, it is obvious that cheating or scamming is a blatant institutionalised practice at Delhi Duty Free. What is more regrettable is that it appears that the management is doing nothing about it.
Or are they party to the rip-off?
These outlets do not seem bothered about the great harm they are doing to India's image.

Delhi duty free at IGI Airport is a place to be avoided. The assistants and cashier find ways and means to dupe you. High prices, duplicate liquor and perfumes are is most likely. The assistants guide and insist on you purchasing liquor where the owner has maximum profit or he wants to liquidate inventory or is duplicate. When coming from abroad buy from the duty free at embarkation and avoid delhi duty free in your own interest.

At Arrivals, Delhi Duty Free is the worst place to buy anything. They cannot handle the rush, moreover they talk so rudely with anyone and everyone in the queue. For that matter, they don't know how to respond to priority queue persons. Today, I just left everything on the counter and left as the cashier was way out of the line. This behavior is not accepted. So without wasting time at delhi duty-free, rather pay some extra money outside and buy with respect.

Mark up much higher than paying duty and taxes. Paid about $15 US more than I should have for rose water and facial mister. Save your money and get it in the city next time. They have substituted the duty with a high profit markup.

I bought a lot of stuff while flying to europe and booked it for collection at return. When i returned i picked up everything from the guy on the counter, but later found out that one of the packets containing the most expensive perfumes that i had bought were not there and rather some other much cheaper ones were there in the pack. Obv it was my fault too that i didn't thoroughly check everything, little did i know this was delhi duty free.
Then when i called them they asked me to write an email and then later called me next morning and said they can not give me my pack as nothing was allowed to go out or in from customs and i can get a full refund. Later i tried calling them so many times but they would never answer and if the operator even picked up and i asked him to connect me to pramod kumar, who was handling my case he would simply say hold on and then disconnect and not answer thereafter. Then after repeatedly writing to them i finally got the most vague reply from mr pramod kumar saying that you just drop the goods at our HO and we will get back to you. On reading this, i got so furious as he did not mention where was this head office or whom do i deliver the goods to or who can i talk to as nobody ever speaks on their helpline. After he replied that you have to come within office hours and take my name and what not. Finally i decided to just let it be as going to the airport and missing my office and then again getting involved with these stupid people was not my cup of tea. So now i have some useless cheap perfumes lying with me and i just feel so cheated from these guys and i can't even do anything about it.
So if you buy anything from here, please double-check everything and match your goods and check the invoice. Please beware.

Delhi Duty Free situated at the Arrival Gate of Delhi Airport seems to be a very nice outlet which is offering lot's of discounts and freebees, but all is not that hunky-dory at the DDF as they are selling some fake liquor too.
What I am writing here is out of 12 years of my experience with the buying of liquor from the DDF situated at the Arrival Gate. In all those years I happened to be at the said DDF 8 times and compelled to buy scotch whiskies because of lots of discounts and freebees and sometimes I even got free suitcase worth more than $40 on my purchase of two bottles worth $40 to 50 only. Even at that time I could never realize that all the discount and freebees comes not only from your own pocket but also by playing with your health because of fake liquor sold under fast selling popular brands.
And in the past, I like others used to gift those bottles to my near dear ones or to officers who generally do not drink these premium scotch whiskies on regular basis. And since they are not regular in consuming good scotch whiskies, if they are offered the fake ones, they won't catch the difference between the fake and original taste so they have never complained for the fake liquor if they got one.
However from the year 2008 onwards, instead of gifting, I started consuming the purchases myself. I bought Chivas in 2008 from the said DDF and When I consumed it, I found that it is not tasting the same as Chivas should. Even more it was difficult to gulp it down the throat. And Still I could not in wildest of my imagination suspected that the the scotch I bought from DDF could be Fake. Instead I blamed myself of not keeping a good health because of which my taste buds are giving me a bad taste of the scotch.
This thing with the taste got repeated with Chivas again in 2011 which I bought with a freebee suitcase I mentioned above and again with the Black Label in 2014 without any suspicion in my mind of fake liquor.
Lastly In 2015 my friend bought Glenlivet from DDF and gifted the same to me. I was so happy and excited because off late I was on Glenlivet and liked it a lot. But When I consumed it didn't taste like the Glenlivet do. Even the taste and aroma was so bad that it made me puke. Again I blamed myself for bad health as a result scotch tasting bad without suspecting that DDF could ever sell fake stuff.
After few days, I again tried the same bottle when I though I am totally in a good health and shape but my bad luck that I again gone thru the same result. Then I asked one of my friend to bring the bottle of Glenlivet he had in his possession which he has purchased from the Heathrow Airport. Then I tried both the bottles, the aroma and taste of that Heathrow bottle was great as the Glenlivet should be but the DDF bottle was literally bad in aroma and taste. Which confirmed that the Glenlivet Bottle from DDF was a fake single malt. On that day I got the shock of my life that DDF is selling fake liquor.
I also realized the agony I have gone through since 2008 for drinking fake scotch bought from DDF, which was always tasting bad but I blamed it on my health and taste buds.
Now Again in June 2016, I happened to be at the Arrival Gate DDF and questioned them for the fake liquor sold by them to me in the past. They just gone stoned and answerless. By looking their face I came to know with certainty that the selling staff also know about the quality of stuff they are selling. Also instead of questioning me or justifying they just asked me to buy some high end stuff which is not a fast selling scotch and assured me that it will not be fake.
So I bought one bottle of Macallan for $80 without any freebees and discount, just for a try and to see if some genuine stuff is there at DDF or everything is fake. But Surprisingly they have genuine stuff too as this purchase turned out to be good.
In conclusion I can say from my experience that everything is not hunky-dory at the Arrival Gate DDF. So Please beware, you should be extra cautious while buying liquor from Delhi Duty Free situated at the Arrival Gate of Delhi Airport.

Passport and boarding pass is necessary. However, you need to be careful against overcharging , duplicate products and misguiding by the staff of Delhi duty free. They lure you to buy particular brands, probably because of higher margins they get in that or may be even duplicate or something which doesn't sell much and they want to get rid of inventory. It is better to buy from the duty free shop at the point of embarkation in india bound flight, to avoid any problems with your purchases.
