We dropped into Central Cottage Industries to do a little gift shopping before heading home. The emporium has numerous levels of floors selling all types of Indian products. It’s a good place to shop if you just want fixed prices & don’t want to banter. However, I found the shop lacked anything ‘special ‘ although my hubby enjoyed it for the selection of Indian made ties.

A few years ago my mum bought a so called designer outfit from here &once home the colour ran in first wash and it was ruined despite following label instructions. We went again last week (big mistake!) & my poor husband paid £50 UK money for a so called genuine red sandalwood fan as a surprise gift for me. he was shown the display fan (genuine) then they give you a packaged one sealed. needless to say when he gave it to me back home it was a total fake!!! Had I know I would have stopped him going there after our first had experience. I am a positive person usually as you can see my other mostly 5* reviews so it took a lot for me to get upset enough to post this as a warning to others. DO NOT SHOP HERE or you are at high risk of being conned. I'm so disappointed.

This is Delhi scams at it best--first night in Delhi, looking a touch lost a "helpful local asked where we wanted to go-- to a local bar --I know one, as he gets on his mobile phone, pretending to work for the local bank--HE hastily flags down a tuktuk, informs us he has asked the driver to take us to a rooftop bar, and it will only cost 30 rupees. The driver took us to this place where he says if we go in, the bar is upstairs--yes naïve but, then surrounded by 6-7, staff members and very persuasive began their show of rolling carpets out in front of us. We did attempt to make a purchase to begin with but got suspicious when the seller tried "skimming" our credit card in a separate machine-- this device tries to copy and alter your details of the magnetic strip. The card became blocked. The sellers wanted us to ring our bank there and then, wanted different credit cards, they even offered a lift back to the hotel to retrieve cash--we left to find them harassing the hotel leaving notes-- on our return to UK, we contacted our credit card company who informed us they had blocked the card that night as their security measures had noted the attempt to access the chip on the card and change it-- trying to override the card in short and had tried to take out £1500 in various transactions. if you cant believe us then ring Santander--their security measures saved us hundreds--THIS A STORE OF THIEVES AND CONMEN AND BULLIES

My freind and I were pleasantly surprised to find a nice , peaceful, quiet, no beggars around, english speaking helpful employees and some really nice crafts, arts, and fabrics.Prices higher , but the ease of shopping makes it worth it,,
there is a restuarant in the place that serves nice food ,and you can sit and rest, as you can easily spend many hours looking through the many items there. I definetly recommend any tourists looking to buy some nice gifts to go there.
There were many people of all countries there shopping and met some nice people while we were there as well!

There is so much to see the the emporium and all under one roof. I highly recommend this visit if you want to purchase gifts for family and friends (or for yourself). It's very organized and you see the price on the item (it's fixed pricing). No bargaining or haggling required (if you want that, visit the stores outside).

I always enjoy my visit to the furniture floor, the wood sofas are lovely. Too expensive to ship home, but lovely to see.

When you pick your items, from anywhere on the floor, you give them to the floor "cashier" who then gives you a receipt. You don't pay there. Shop around first and collect all your receipts. Then, take them to the cashier on the first floor who will add it all up for you. After you pay, head over to pick up and pick up all your items at once.

You can really spend a full day here. Have fun!

This is a government-run store with a wide selection of crafts spread over several floors. The staff give the impression that their real life is elsewhere – they seem to be chatting on the phone or amongst themselves. This is a good thing because it means that no one is shadowing you while you are browsing, yet they are very pleasant if asked for assistance. Actually buying anything is a cumbersome process but it worked just fine. If you are staying at The Imperial hotel across the street and choose to walk here, be advised that there may be attempts by touts to misdirect you away from this store. It happened to us and several men seemed to be in collusion in trying to direct us away from the Central Cottage Crafts Emporium, no doubt to some other store with a similar name. I'm sure it would not have had fixed prices though! The touts will tell you it has moved due to the subway construction – it hasn’t. It is just where the website says it is. Just check with the hotel concierge before you set off. Basically you walk through the hotel’s exit gate, turn left and walk a short distance past the Tibetan market on the left until you come to the traffic lights, where you turn right and cross the road, and the store is just there with its entrance on the ground floor of a yellowish building. It looks a bit ramshackle on the outside, but it is certainly open. When we walked there, we could not go the easy way because a crane was lifting a girder across the road and pedestrians were stopped while this was going on. Therefore we had to cross the road in the other direction from the hotel, between tall hoardings which shield the store from view so you can’t get your bearings. We had to walk around the block behind the store, which gave the “helpful” gentlemen a chance to try and send us off in the wrong direction. There seemed to be three in the scam, and a tuk-tuk driver too, but they approached us separately to add credibility to their little play. You don’t need a tuk-tuk of course as it is a short walk. Having ignored them, and gone in the opposite direction to the one they were all insisting was correct we found the store just where it has always been.
Since this store is fixed price, and has a lot of items from all over India, it is certainly worth a visit if only to get an idea of what items should cost elsewhere. It also has a cafe, which we did not try.

I purchased 2 carpets from cottage industries.
When I returned to Australia I checked my bank statement and was charged twice for the carpets. I have tried phoning them to sort this out and every time I mention a problem they just hang up. No response to emails.

So be very very very careful if you deal with this company.

The concierge at the hotel sent me here in response to my query as to where I should go to bring back a nice pashmina and a silk princess dress for the missus and the little girl back home. Boy, did he steer me right! This place has everything you imagine when you think of all those exotic carvings, fabrics, paintings, etc. that scream "India" at you. It's a very weird setting -- the store is laid out like an Escher painting -- all kinds of weird staircases in unexpected places and departments in weird little rabbit hutch corners. And the way you shop is weird: you pick something out, give it to the sales clerk in that department, who then sends it to a central pickup location and hands you a sales slip. You collect all your sales slips and pay for them all at a cash register downstairs. I guess it's a good way of not making you have to schlepp around stuff (since there are no shopping baskets or carts), but it's weird, especially when they don't explain their little system to you. So anyway, if you're looking to shop for those souvenirs, from little tchotchkes that scream "India" to some pretty fancy fabrics, scultptures etc. this is a great place for it.

This well known emporium has become famous for restoring the pride in their creative spirits & livelihood of millions of Indian craftsmen`s glory under one roof. Here one can shop for wide ranging authentic products from exquisite sculptures, paintings, metal ware, wood craft, pottery, stoneware, branded Bankura silver, carpets, furniture, furnishings, linen, jewellery & accessories & other craft items. Thus it includes nearly the complete range of India`s rich cultural heritage of thousands of years marrying ethnic value with modern usage by providing marketing support for product development, reviving languishing art & also providing for their livelihood with centralised marketing of their finished products at a reasonable rate.

Thus a visit is a must for any one to select from its wide range of authentic products either to buy or to get an idea of the price & the product you could buy at another un fancied place at a cheaper price! Being a Govt institution the service is not what one desires.

We visited this place a few days ago to buy some last minute presents on our trip to India. The positives are it has a good variety of items ranging from clothes to artwork to carpets and much more, Plus the prices are fixed and there is none of the pestering you get in the street or in other markets. Negatives are the prices are obviously higher than other places in Delhi as this seems to be entirely frequented by tourists. You choose your items and get an invoice, then go to the cashier and pay before actually getting the goods. The main negative for us was the slow payment system (allow 15 to 20 minutes), plus the surly and disinterested attitude of the lady who took our money. She did not have the courtesy to look at us, or say one word of thanks or "hello", plus she worked at snails pace. Our guide said this is government owned and that attitude is typical of Indian government employees. However that was not our general experience in our two weeks in India. We were treated politely and in a friendly manner by government people everywhere else, except by this rude cashier at Central Cottage Industries.
