About
Established at the initiative of the avid art collector Kiran Nadar, the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (KNMA) opened its doors to the public in January 2010, as the first private museum of art exhibiting Modern and contemporary works from India and the sub-continent. Located in the heart of New Delhi, India’s capital city, KNMA as a non-commercial, not-for-profit organization intends to exemplify the dynamic relationship between art and culture through its exhibitions, publications, educational, and public programs. The ever-growing collection of KNMA is largely focused on significant trajectories. Its core collection highlights a magnificent generation of 20th century Indian painters from the post-Independent decades and equally engages the different art practices of the younger contemporaries. In Kiran Nadar’s words, “Though the idea of opening a private art museum occurred with the intention of sharing my art collection with the larger public, I was also acutely aware of the existing dearth of institutional spaces that could bring visibility to modern and contemporary art from India and the subcontinent”. Sponsored by the Shiv Nadar Foundation, KNMA is plugging the lack of art promotion in the public sphere and is working towards encouraging art appreciation. . KNMA aspires to become a place for confluence, through its curatorial initiative and exhibitions, school and college workshops, art appreciation discourses, symposiums and public programs. It is focused on bridging the gap between art and the public and fostering a museum-going culture in India. In order to activate the museum as a site for visual and intellectual dialogue, the museum aims to develop innovative programs that seek active collaborations from artists as well as the public. KNMA is a noteworthy addition to the list of private art museums that are a part of the shift occurring in the art world across the globe with increasing number of collectors bringing out their collections to the public. The 34,000 square feet museum space has housed several critically acclaimed exhibitions that have celebrated Modern and contemporary art in the country and abroad. KNMA upholds the tradition of art patronage and continues to expand that definition through its education initiatives. It also collaborates with schools, colleges, NGOS, trusts This diffusion of knowledge is achieved through regular workshops where adults and children alike get to learn about new art forms and techniques as well as benefit from their interactions with the artists who frequently head these programs. Screenings of films, stimulating curatorial programs, and curated walks form an integral part of the museum’s ever expanding itinerary.

Outstanding modern art experience. Their exhibits are rotational, and this time it was the Photography of Raghu Rai. The quality and curation of the exhibit, the understated modern ambience, access services, ability to pick and choose what appeals to you it fantastic. The interactive exhibits were a work in progress - visually appealing but too much twiddling with your mobile. But i expect this will get better. Parking is slightly tedious, and the museum staff are low energy and not particularly helpful. The pamphlets they had (permanent exhibit) were not consistent with their message (rotational exhibits) .. All that said, highly recommended as one of the top 2 museum experiences across all categories in the Delhi area

Kiran Nadar is one of the most famous museum of art in Delhi to explore the contemporary and modern art through digital and traditional displays. The collection here is diverse and is based on different topics that change in 3-4 months. Here the art displayed through digital means is totally outstanding. The screens are set up in a format that the viewers can view many art elements. The most convenient fact about this museum is that the entry her is free of cost. Many workshops and events are organized here for students and young adults and also for kids sometimes. For instance once the museum displayed the artworks of Van Gogh which attracted several eyes through the digital screen displays in many innovative ways.

By far the most modern, organized and multimedia museum I have visited in Delhi so far! Very clean, well mounted and presented. This exhibit will make you feel you're in an art gallery in New York.... And it is free! Beautiful private collection of modern and contemporary art tucked away in a Western style shopping mall!
Visited in Feb 2015 with dominant exhibit "the male body-being" from art teacher/artist Rameshwar Brootha. Impressive collection juxtaposing opposing concepts of body parts and rectangular shapes. A collection portraying the contradictory world of classes in India is presented through an ape representation. Very interesting: the pieces of art generated lots of discussions!
Paintings, sculptures, videos, and prints from Indian artists. Presentation is amazing. Spacious. Some Sculptures mounted on revolving structures. Display deserves to be praised: all descriptions and explanations in English, positioning of art to maximize its effect, background/wall paint to compliment the exhibit, etc.
Difficult to find unless you are familiar with malls in southern Delhi. Enter the mall with Hard Rock Cafe (can't miss the guitar!), western most in the three Saket malls. Located at the back, passed the Hilton Garden Inn.

You might say that I’ am a person of limited exposure but still i would say for me this is the first museum I have seen in a Shopping mall and has something to capture interest of all.
Even before entering the place a huge tree of stainless steel utensils is there to welcome you. A tree which has almost every segment of utensil slicked to it (hmm after thinking for a while i found pressure cooker is missing ;)) Let me tell you this reminds me of Rajnikant of Robot the Chitti who can be a magnet to attract :D hee hee
The entire museum is spread in an area of 18,000 sq feet and has some separate chambers for different set of art pieces. It is India’s first philanthropic, profit-free contemporary and modern art museum and it houses artwork created by some of the leading names in Indian art.
Well when you get in you see a dragon like figure made up of feathers and homeopathic bottles . Does that sounds like our “कबाड़ से जुगाड़”
The art collection largely consists of works from Indian and sub-continental artists such as Rashid Rana, Shahzia Sikander, Anish Kapoor, Subodh Gupta, and S.H. Raza, among others.

The art gallery is a private art collection of Kiran Nadar. It is situated right next to a popular mall, but despite that hardly any of the crowd trickles into the gallery. And that ensures you get the whole place almost to yourself to appreciate the beautiful pieces or art. Right now there is an exhibition titled Constructs Construction that showcases work of 30 artists. They are just amazing pieces of varying sizes, some occupying a whole room, from scrap metal, cardboard, burnt wood, twigs, staples and tiles. Besides you also have the works of famous artists like Raza, Subramanyan and Ram Kumar. There is also an amazing exhibit in an elevator, where there are projected images on the three panels that give you the feel of movement both upwards and down as it takes you through a series of images of passing through different floors. Photography is not allowed inside the museum. The only image that you may capture is the one outside made of steel by Subodh Gupta. Most people have seen this but not walked a few steps beyond and into the art gallery. It is well worth a visit.

The Museum is well maintained and has an extensive collection, considering it is a private one. The early pictures of pragati maidan, shr ram center and CSIR buildings had an impact on me ...it reflected the progressive mindset of that age and an encouragement of the arts, sciences, literature which truly takes people forward
The art collection by MF Hussain, Souza, Raza and others is also quite varied and modern. There are also audio visual pieces in the camera room which I found enthralling.
The descriptions of some of the pieces could be better though.
Overall, a pleasant and relaxing experience..highly recommended.

The exhibition itself is interesting. If you like the Delhi Modern Art Gallery you'll like this. Problem is, it'll take you much longer to get there than the amount of time you'll spend in the place. And that's if you can even find it- It's located in a nearly empty wing of a shopping mall complex two kilometers from the nearest Metro. Calling this place a museum is a bit of a stretch- you'll be in and out in 20 minutes at most.
If shopping malls are your thing, you could combine that with your visit. There is also a park a bit further down the road.
A neat exhibition, but not worth going out of your way for.
