This is the first time that I decided to go for a trek and I chose the mighty 5 day trek of Hampta Pass near Manali.
We decided to go in early June. In 2023, it was anamoly this year as it had snowed heavily in higher Himalayas in May.
Hence, we found snow from 3rd day onwards and had to go to the peak of Hampta Pass and come back to our base the same day.
Our trek was cut short and on 4th day, we came back to where we started.
I belive the mountain passes of Hampta passes should have opened from 25 June onwards.
We could not see the mesmerising Chandrataal lake this time but it's probably for the next time.
As for Bikat, they had very professional trek leaders. The main trek leader Shailendra Dhami is a pro and always took care of everyone during tough and dangerous mountain slope crossings.
As for the cooking and tent team, they were an amazing lot who kept all the tents ready for us before we reached our base at the end of evey day. The food was amazing and they used to give highly nutritious food comprising of daal, sabji, roti, rice, tea, milk, coffee for 3 times a day. After our breakfast, they already had our lunch prepared and wrapped in a foil, along with fruity and chocolate. Believe me, it is that fruity that gives you much needed energy when you are physically exhausted in between.
Hampta Pass is a difficult trek for first timers. It became even more challenging and onerous with the presence of heavy snow at Hampta Pass.
I would suggest the first timers like myself to go with a friend. This is especially the case for female travellers who should definitely travel with atleast 1 male counterpart as the trek is physically demanding.
Also, if you're not very physically fit/female/above 40, then please decide to keep your rucksack bag/luggage on a horse (khachar) who will carry the food, tents and luggage. You will just need to spend 1000-1500 more and should be informed to Bikat atleast 5 days before the trek.
Please don't compromise with your safety and endurance.

Dhruv
