The bat caves are a real adventure. We chose the short way. Are about 15 minutes, I would say, until you get to a small lake for swimming. Be careful where you step. There are some holes. You can also make a long walk. Here you can walk as long as you want. I do not know if there also comes a lake for swimming? The local guide was great and prudent! The path through the small river through the mangroves before and after the cave is impressive.

we did the hiking tour to the polo beach on bastimentos with Titi. I can only say it was one of the best tours I have ever done! Titi brought fruits from his own farm and showed interesting trees, animals and new paths on the hike. we felt safe in the jungle with Titi. the best tour to get in touch with local people and avoid very touristy places! I would book the tour again in a heartbeat!

A week ago we did the jungle walking tour to polo beach. Our guide was titi. Tom couldn’t join us because of other activities but he helped us really well to get there. We we’re at the other side of the Island but he sent us a boat to pick us up. The tour was with a small group and Titi. Titi was awesome. He lived almost all of his live on bastimentos and knows the island really well. He told us so much about everything. He climbed jn threes to get us the all different kinds of fresh fruits, told us about the birds, the people and showed us the island. Even build us a little bridge when me and another girl didn’t want to walk through the mud. So he got to big branches and build us the bridge. At the and we arrived at polobeach. A 70 year old man who lives there for almost all of is live so he got his own beach. Normally polo would prepare the lunch together with Titi, but he was a bit drunk. He had some friends over during the day so when we arrived around 3 he was a bit drunk. He told us all kinds of crazy stories, it was fun to meet him. He had a crazy live and he is know just enjoying it by cooking, drinking, smoking and having fun with different people everyday. It was a fun day. After the tour Titi and Tom invited us to a party at there organisation there throwing every monday. There was a local band and it was a really relaxing and fun to be there! Thanks Titi and Tom!

Yesterday my boyfriend and I were part of the group doing the Zapatilla tour. Our guide, the boat caballero, Christo was super friendly and funny. We have seen dolphins, sloths, crocodiles, starfishes and parrot fishes. On the sea a fisher gave us some lobsters which Christo cooked with rice for lunch. It tasted great! At the end of the tour we bought cocktails at blue coconut, a nice place to relax.

We just got back from 3 days on Bastimentos. We could never have gotten such a varied, complete look at the area without Tom and his adventures. We started with the Polo's Paradise hike, which was the most unique tour I've ever been on. We walked across the island from Old Bank on a muddy trail through jungle over hilly cow pastures, trying various tropical fruits and getting a good background on the island from Tom and Titi. We walked through beautiful, somewhat built-up Red Frog beach and on to the tropical paradise of Polo's Beach, where we swam and had a delicious of chicken, coconut rice and potatoes cooked by Christo at Polo's cabin. Polo himself seemed to be chilling the day we were there. We saw some of the little, red frogs there. We walked back to Red Frog boat access and took a boat home around 5-6 pm (much to my son's relief, who was afraid we'd have to hike all the way back). It rained some off and on during lunch, but luckily spared us during the earlier hike. The rain wasn't really a problem. We sheltered under Polo's roof during lunch. Day 2, Tom set up a tour of Nivida Bat Cave for us with Rutilio Milton, a leader of the indiginous Ngobe Bugle tribe on Basti who speaks English well and is known for his bat cave tours. It was raining off and on again, which doesn't make much difference in a cave. We got a boat taxi to Bahia Honda, the center of the community there where we met in the restaurant/school. He took us up the mangrove-lined river to the cave (20-30"), then toured the cave, where the water level was pretty high due to recent rain. We went to the first waterfall, which required a brief section of swimming. We could have stopped earlier (as my 10 yo son did), with water only thigh-level (waist for my 10 year old), and still seen plenty of bats, but it was really cool to go the little bit further to the waterfall. It sounds like we could have gone further had we wanted to. The lunch back at Bahia Honda was ready when we got back (~2 hours RT to the cave), cooked by Carmen. Another delicious, typical meal of chicken, rice, plantains. For our third day, we did the Zapatilla tour. The sun cooperated and we had a totally sunny day. Christo led this, with Javier driving the boat. We started with a visit to Sloth Island, where we watched a sloth for awhile, then snorkelled at Cayo Coral, then hung out on one of the Zapatilla Islands and snorkelled again. I saw some beautiful, brightly colored fish at both places. There's a cooler on the boat, so we enjoyed some beers we had brought there. Then we went over toward the Salt Creek area, stopping to watch a bunch of dolphins play right near our boat one the way. We hung out while Christo cooked another nice, traditional lunch with chicken, coconut rice and plantains. A couple of caimans lurked nearby. After a couple of hours, we headed back by a small island with lots of starfish surrounding, then to the Blue Coconut, an uncrowded over-the-water bar/restaurant in a beautiful location on Solarte. My kids snorkelled there while my husband and I had a drink and hung out (bring some $ for food/drinks if you want). We were done around 6 pm, although Christo offered to stay there longer if we wanted. I enjoyed listening to Christo and Javier speaking Guari Guari (the creole language based on English (although unintelligible to me) with some Spanish and indiginous Guaymi thrown in) that is the primary language spoken in Old Bank. Overall, an unforgettable 3 days on Bastimentos!
