A well-preserved crusader church
May 2018 • Friends
The building came from the times when Tartus belonged to the crusaders. It was converted to a mosque later on, and a tiny minaret was added to it. Today it holds a museum. Dark, not very interesting, and partly covered in pigeon droppings. One can not take pictures inside.
It may not be vastly impressive, but it's a very well preserved crusader Gothic church, and the best thing to see in Tartus.
It stands on a square, but the trees make it a bit difficult to get a perfect shot.
There's an ok hotel in front of it.

Beautiful and very well preserved!

The old cathedral in Tartous has now been repurposed into the Tartous museum. It's well worth a visit for the building alone, as well as the exhibits on offer there.
