Indika is an extraordinary artist! His paintings are really amazing! Today we went to his gallery, because two of our german friends sent us there. So we went not with the idea of buying something but just to look and give the greetings. But then we stayed a very long time because we were not able to leave anymore. We couldn't stop watching all these incredible amazing paintings of this calm, friendly and very sympathic artist. We finally ended up with buying a few paintings because we couldn't decide which one we like the most.
Make sure to go there on your own, without a driver or somebody bringing you there, so you can get a reasonable price. This gallery is always open, even when somebody will tell you it is closed or burned down or something else 😉

After reading all the reviews, i decided take a bus from Matara to Tangalle. We started walking from the bus stop towards this business and stopped along the way to look in some other local tourist shops. finally we hired a tuk tuk to take us the rest of the way. its a good distance of a walk. I had to keep reminding the driver, Indika Art is on the beach. not in the neighbourhood. we finally found the place and it was a nice little shop. they have some awesome paintings.
I didn't find what i was looking for, but I won't give up. i will return next year and see what new paintings he has available. I did not meet the owner.

This shop is just off the beach and has really nice paintings and also souvenirs. It's run by a really interesting artist who has won international awards.

Indika is a brilliant artist and his gallery is the best we've visited in Sri Lanka. He is passionate and we were very happy to meet him and discover his paintings. We are bringing some amazing souvenirs back to Mauritius!!

Even if your not looking to actually buy a painting, and many of Indika's paintings are not for sale (no matter the price!) anyways, this little art gallery is absolutely worth the visit. As an oil painter myself I can certainly appreciate Indika's enormous talent and what's more is that he's a very friendly guy and happily describes the backstory to whichever of his surrealist style painting that might, and surely will, peak your curiosity.

Indika's Art Gallery is on the beach road (Madilla Road) near Tangalle. We were not sure what to expect since Indika paints in many styles and some of the paintings are aimed at the tourist market. However, we were delighted to find that his traditional paintings are exceptional. He is inspired by temple paintings such as those at Mulkirigala. He paints local scenes in that traditional style and they are beautifully and carefully executed.
Indika paints on canvas and on small wood panels. He can remove the canvas from its stretchers and roll it into a well packaged tube for easier transportation. His prices are very reasonable.
Indika also stocks well priced souvenirs and jewellery.
He speaks excellent English and comes across as a very genuine, decent person, as well as a very talented and committed artist.

Amazing pictures! Well worth a visite. Nice Leopard pictures printed with a hot metall in wood!
The things the owner did by his own are high quality but he also have cheaper souvenirs, he's selling them for good, fair prices!

We collect art from all of our travels and found this little shop through Tripadvisor. We were not disappointed. There was a wide selection of artwork both original pieces and painted replicas of traditional Sri Lankan drawings. Everything was reasonably priced and the artist and his wife were friendly. It was somewhat difficult to find. Near the Tangalle beach which is a nice place to visit while he packages your purchases.
