Place to Get Views of the Coast
Feb 2020 • Couples
Not a lighthouse (yes, there’s a light on the top, but the lighthouse that had been here is now gone), this is a monument to the SL Navy. Shoes off inside. The climb to the top is easy, and there are paintings along the walls highlighting the history of Sri Lanka — often grim. At the top there are nice views of the coastline. A visit takes 15 minutes if you’re slow. A brochure explaining the artwork would have been nice. Free entry.

Something from the past

A nice spot to visit to see the old lighthouse and the treacherous seas around it. Looks well preserved, and worth a visit

Lovely ocean views and interesting paintings

Our driver stopped here to show us this en route from Ella to Talalla No longer a lighthouse, each landing has pictorial representations of Sri Lanka’s naval past. Easy climb to top rewarded us with lovely ocean views of surrounding area. No one else there and free entry. Definitely worth a stop

Nice spot

Not a proper lighthouse per say. Rather a monument where shoes are forbidden. View from the top is worth climbing the set of stairs while looking at Sri Lanka history through murals and sculptures.

Beautiful Lighthouse with Amazing Coastal Views
Aug 2018 • Friends
We happened upon this gem of a lighthouse as we drove through Tangalle on the way from Yala to Galle Fort.
We couldn't believe how ornate it is inside with all sorts of sculptures and statuary and lots of beautiful army/navy themed murals on the walls as you go up the stairs.
Unbelievably, it is completely free to enter and though the friendly guy on the door was very chatty, he didn't have much English. I think he was telling us that this is a pretty new monument and it is connected to the Sri Lankan Army or Navy. Perhaps its newness explains why it was absent from Tripadvisor when I searched for the listing!?
Anyway, it's a very easy climb on a wide stairwell with all sorts of distractions on the way up as I said.
At the top, the views of the surrounding coastline is spectacular, really stunning. It is lovely and breezy up there too, very welcome on a hot, hot day like the one we got!
We stayed for ages just drinking in the view, a really lovely place to stop and one that derserves to be visited.
