The weather wasn’t great for a few days so we decided to do a few things in Tangalle that we have not done before on previous trips here. One of these was a cooking class with Dilani from Tangalle Cooking Class.

Due to the pandemic Dilani lost the property she and her husband took a loan out for and as a result she now lives in a property owned by her husband’s family.

The kitchen is a little bit dark but it’s spotlessly clean and she has everything she and her guests need to learn about Sri Lankan cooking. Dilani makes everything she and her lovely family eat. All the produce she uses is organic. She’s very knowledgeable and happy to share this and her recipes with you. The class took about 2 hours and we made 5 dishes which we ate at the end. Although you don’t cook everything yourself you do get to see how she prepares and cooks everything. You also get the opportunity to help out as little or as much as you want. All the dishes we had were really tasty and very authentic.

Communication with her husband Mr Prasanna via email and WhatsApp beforehand was easy and if he’s not doing other taxi work he can come and collect you from your accommodation. We felt this was 2 hours well spent helping a local family move forward after a difficult few years economically during the pandemic.

We just had a wonderful afternoon with Dilani. We were collected from our hotel Antara Peace Haven by her very friendly husband. Only a few minutes drive and when we arrived she welcomed us into her lovely home. She explained all the spices we were about to use and the lunch menu, also offered us bottled water. It was a hot day and her kitchen was kept cool by a very effective fan. We then helped prepare a Dahl, Rotti, pumpkin curry, potato curry and prawn curry.

Dilani is a fantastic teacher, very patient, speaks excellent English and the session was very informative. Every dish was delicious and made for the perfect lunch. This is excellent value for money and definitely something you should do while in Tangalle.

I really recommend this cooking class ! We were extremely well received and we were able to discover all the little secrets behind the delicious Sri Lankan dishes! We learned how to make different curries that we can now reproduce at home! We left with 5-6 recipes ! After the cooking class we were able to taste all the dishes we’ve done in the kitchen before with the lady. It was so good! The lady speaks very good English and we could ask her lots of questions, she was very attentive. It's a great experience to do!

We had a very nice experience cooking with Dilani in her own kitchen. We started at 12.30 and ended the class with a meal around 14-15. We learned to cook Sri Lankan daal, pumpkin curry, potato curry, roti and calamari, and everything was delicious. We will definitely make the recipes at home.

The cooker taught us how to cook a rice & curry with shrimps. She gave us different recipes and explained very well the different steps to follow. We could take notes and photos to be able to do it once home :) She also provided some advices to adapt the recipes with the products we can find in Europe (for instance how to replace fresh coconut).
And of course the meal was delicious :) We definitely recommend this cooking lesson !

Fabulous evening in Dilanis home kitchen learning to cook Sri Lankan food in an authentic way, learning about all the spices and methods. We had a wonderful evening and Dilani was such a welcoming host and teacher. This is a great experience of beginners or experts, very relaxed and you end by tasting some delicious home cooked Sri Lankan food. Dilani can help arrange transport to her home for you through her husbands taxi company. All very reasonable rates for the meal and transport. One of the best experiences we had on the whole trip.

The host was very welcoming and we greatly enjoyed the variety of food she showed us how to make. Lots of vegetables were used and she did not hold back with the spices! The calamari dish was particularly delicious, as were the potatoes. There isn't much hands-on experience as the kitchen space is limited, but she was very good at showing us what ingredients she was using as well as the amounts of said ingredients. All in all, a great experience :)
