we recently visited Sigiriya and would highly recommend it as a must-visit destination. The climb to the top of the rock is around 1200 steps, but it's well worth the effort for the incredible views across the forest. I would recommend visiting in the morning to avoid the heat and crowds, and to take advantage of the stunning sunrise views (start 5:30). While the entry fee is $30, I believe it's a reasonable price given the historical significance and beauty of the site. One thing to be aware of is that there are often many guides at the site who may hassle tourists, so it's best to be prepared for this and set clear boundaries. Overall, I found Sigiriya to be an amazing place to visit and would highly recommend it to others

Sigiriya Rock, also known as Lion Rock, is an impressive landmark located just 30 minutes away from Dambulla village in Sri Lanka. The rock can be reached by tuk-tuk or bus and is a must-see destination for any traveler to the country.

It's recommended to arrive early to avoid the crowds and make the most of your visit. The entrance fee is $30, but it's worth it for the breathtaking views from the top. The climb is of moderate difficulty, so make sure to wear comfortable sneakers and bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated along the way.

As you make your way to the top, you'll pass by ancient ruins and intricate frescoes, all while taking in the stunning scenery around you. Once you reach the summit, you'll be rewarded with a panoramic view of the surrounding jungle and countryside. Don't miss out on the opportunity to experience this incredible piece of Sri Lankan history and culture.

Well worth a visit. Recommend that you take one of the numerous guides who are at the entrance waiting for tourists to roll up. They all wear a uniform polo shirt so you know that they are offical guides, however as like anywhere you need to be prepared to negotiate a price. We paid $20 US for a guide for 3 hours, our guide was excellent giving you a lot of background to the fortress which you would not get from reading the information pamphlet you get given with your ticket. There are toilets located just by the ticket office, very clean but no toilet paper so make sure you take tissues. There is also a water station before you enter with purified drinking water where you can fill up your water bottle. Be prepared to climb up narrow stairs to get to the top, the view is amazing and worth the climb. When we went in Feb there were no hornets which we had read about however we were told that it was the wrong season. Beware of monkeys everywhere which is all part of the Sri Lankan experience. When you exit the fortress there are numerous toilet blocks which were all clean and well maintained, again take your tissues. Make sure you wear comfortable walking clothes, shoes, hat and take water, there is nowhere to purchase water along the way until the exit. We arrived about 9.30ish which we found to be fine, the heat was bearable, the timing of your visit will all be dependent on the time of year you go.

Definately worth visiting. This is my 4th time here and I learn something new every time. I would recommend going all the way up as the views are amazing! I would also recommend getting a guide who will explain the history.
**The only issue here is the scammers. Beware of the guys 'helping' you up the steps beforebyou get to the rock. If you accept their 'assistance' they will follow you to the top and back down then they tell you that you will have to pay them.

Apart from that this place and the views are amazing!

We had a great experience around this rock fortress. The Tickets for SAARC nations are at a discounted rate of 15USD. you need to provide your actual passport to avail the discount. For non saarc nations the tickets are 30 USD. We hired a local guide who asked for 5K LKR but we bargained and got him to agree for 3K. He explained all relevant details right from the start. Great site to visit.. The climb is a little strenuous and become overcrowded sometimes. Overall we completed the climb and descend in around 2 to 2.5 hours (along with my kid - 7 year old). View from the top is great . you can see a huge buddha statue a little far away and also the pidirangula rock. Overall i recommend a visit to this heritage site.

The climb to the top of Sigiriya Rock is challenging but the view from the top is incredible. Definitely take lots of water and try to visit in the early morning as the sun is quite unforgiving at the top, with little to no shade. It took about 20 minutes to walk up the rock,

Definitely explore the surrounding gardens, as there are lots of hidden treasures. We enjoyed looking at the caves, which were carefully created to protect from the rain, as well as the surrounding pools. Also, visiting the museum before entering the grounds definitely gave us a lot more insight into what we were about to see.

One of our party dithered about taking part in the climb because of a fear of heights. The steps are uneven up until the Paws, where, if you don't have a head for heights you can wait whilst others ascend the slightly rickety staircase to the top. I wore Merrell sandals with grip soles and they were great. If you are nervous about following the route, or needing a little help, you can hire a guide.

The views at the top are stunning and it is worth the climb, popping on the way back down, up to see some lusty murals. Again the cage, circular staircase, isn't for everyone.

At the top the world and his wife seem to have assembled, but it is worth it.

Amazing destination for those who like to explore heritage sites. Climb to the lion rock top is a bit strenuous. Best time to start the climbing is in the morning, avoid climbing in hot sun. The museum has some splendidly preserved artefacts dating back to 2 century A.C. This also houses 5000 (claims) year old human remains. Tools and Furnaces dating back to 2nd to 5th Century A.C. Amazingly preserved earring.

Beautiful ancient rock fortress! Easy climb. We really enjoyed the views. Only reason I’m giving it a 2 starts is because of our guide. We actually had a great time once he left us alone.
Be careful with tour guides and “helpers”
We had a man following us from the start and he was talking about the Sigiriya Rock. After approximately 5 minutes he stated that he was a freelance guide and offered to accompany us to the top while telling us about the history of this rock fortress. He stated that he didn’t have a price and we could decide at the end what to pay him depending on how we liked his services. We agreed. About 5 minutes after that he brought us to a man selling “magic boxes” and insisted we try to open them. We were not interested in buying any boxes. A few minutes after that his friend arrived and started “helping” me up the stairs. I did not ask for help nor was it needed. He insisted on holding onto my hand however it was very awkward and opposite of helpful. It quickly became hazardous as none of the steps are the same size and walking with a stranger like that out of the blue was weird. This helping up the steps became annoying and I tried numerous times to stop it but he kept holding his hand out. My husband was actually walking behind us and thought it was the funniest thing. It’s funny now looking back at it. He even snapped some photos. After a few more sets of steps I had to tell my husband that I am not climbing 1200 steps and up the rock like this. Luckily we were still in the beginning. My husband told our guide who translated to the helper that his assistance was not needed. We were then told he doesn’t work for free! Our guide then told us that his services were $40-$50! We paid less for a taxi drive with all our luggage from the airport to our hotel! Be careful! We told both of them to have a nice day however the guide still wanted money for his services “thus far” Ruins the experience!

Before you climb the rock there are lots of structures and courtyards at the base which is worth spending a bit of time exploring.
There are lots of steps to climb up to the top with picturesque views on the the way up. At the top there are more structures and incredible views which are wonderful at sunset.

It is very busy and touristy and much more expensive than visiting the nearby rock at Pidurangala (highly recommend as you can see Lion Rock from there).

If you're in Sigiriya then this is a must see (but we prefer Pidurangala).
