- Matt LDubai, United Arab Emirates22 contributionsJust a tick box exercise really. This place has great views and the longer you look around the more you can see. It is important to go early because the more people the more treacherous and dull it becomes. There are a lot of people who don’t take great care on the steps so you need to be aware of others. You do need to be physically capable to get up this, it took my wife and I 30 minutes as she needed breaks and is reasonably fit but it is a big elevation gain over a very short period and approximately 1km walk in total. It is expensive but it has to be done i guess!Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 18, 2024
- Lonely Laowai174 contributionsLess crowded late afternoon, ascent is brief but hardIt is absolutely as amazing as it looks. Head up in late afternoon for the slowest time and a terrific sunset view, but heads up there are some wall paintings you can miss as the site closes at 530 (tho tourists are allowed to hang around about an hour longer). To make sure you don’t miss these, take the first fork to the right after the wall of stairs, climb up to see pics, then head back to continue your ascent. We websites to catch this on the way back and just missed it. Heads up the ascent is brief but BRUTAL. Do not attempt in middle of the afternoon, and bring plenty of water, but careful with it as there are no restrooms the entire time. Doable without hassleif you bring a couple energy drinks and pace yourself, or if you are reasonably fit.Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 19, 2024
- ernstbeelerBasel, Switzerland367 contributionsAdventurous climb with a sporty outcomeWonderful complex, the king must have felt safe there. Climbing up through the water gardens is wonderful and leaves many impressions. After that, however, the climbing of the stairs begins and it is quite an adventure. If I counted correctly, there are about 1200 steps up and the same number down. There were too many people, so I had to wonder whether the railings attached to the outside of the rock face would be able to bear the weight.Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 22, 2024

- JR_EssexChelmsford, United Kingdom584 contributionsWell worth the climbA visit to Sigiriya is on most people’s itinerary when touring Sri Lanka. Our visit was on a Saturday and we arrived about 8-30am, it was busy but not uncomfortably so. Having already read up on the site, we skipped to the museum, which is by the ticket office, to get the rock climbed before it got too hot. The climb itself was not too bad, my wife does not like heights but was determined to get to the top, so whilst we were on the metal step section, just didn’t look down! Once at the top it is interesting to walk round and see the remains of the various developments, note you get a helpful leaflet with your ticket, which provides some useful information. The views from the top are also spectacular. Although there are some monkeys around, they did not seem to trouble the tourists. It may seem obvious but there are no facilities within the complex, so take plenty of water and any other refreshments that you may need.Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 5, 2024
- Louise S99 contributionsStunningAscent in 25 minutes with an average physical condition, but accessible to the vast majority because they are stairs either in the rock (irregular) or metal. The climb can be steep, but take your time if necessary. Don't forget your water bottle! Unfortunately, we were not able to see the sunrise because the rock was in the clouds, however the site is surprising, and the points of interest to see on the way down are superb (the young ladies are magnificent, breathtaking!). Enjoy the garden after the descent and not at the start of the visit, as the site quickly fills up with visitors.Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 6, 2024

I actually thought it would be worse but surprisingly we took our time and rested at every viewpoint. It was quite challenging for someone as unfit as I am, although there’s no competition and the garden grounds were also beautiful and worth strolling around.Visited March 2024Traveled with friendsWritten March 7, 2024
- Elke16 contributionsA Must-See! Really impressive ancient fortress with unique art and awsome viewpointsA Must-See if you are interested in history, art or nature! The ancient fortress is really impressive with unique art and awsome viewpoints 😃 (good footgear recommended) Sigiriya was part of my wonderful tour in January 2024, tailored perfectly to my needs and wishes. Temples, rock temples, archaelogical sites, jungle & elephants, culture, cooking, ... My driver, Rohan, realised instantly what I liked most and showed me, in addition to the well known places, also some hidden strong sites. He is not only a very good and safe driver but also a skilled and flexible guide, sometimes a guard and, fortunately, a good pal. He also gave veritable insider hints, trained my bargaining skills and found the hotels and restaurants most suitable for me. I am very happy about that rich tour! If you are looking for a good tour guide, just talk to Rohan about your time, your budget and your ideas and he will develop a plan together with you. From the plateau with the lion's claws, take the stairs to the top for a great view. The palace once stood on top of the mountain. On the way back you will see beautiful murals.Visited March 2024Traveled with friendsWritten March 10, 2024

Climbing steep heights was not exactky on our itinerary when we planned our srilanka trip. What we read about Sigiriya was about its breathtaking view. We had probably not read the fine print of the dangerous, thrilling adventure it had in store. Our guide who was used to getting passengers from one air conditioned hotel to the other was amused at the idea that we were game to climbing arduous heights. So we asked to take us to sigiriya rock on the evening we reached there. Having read the Instagram post I was all ready for the phased climb. We began our ascent at about 5pm with the sky already turning grey. So it was a reminder of the scenes from the movie Manjummel boys ( malayalam original). Narrow pathways between boulders and steep staircases which completely disappeared as u ascended, one could not really figure out how high u were going because of the trees. There were climbers from various parts of the world mostly fit men and women and all we knew was we weren’t giving up yet. Ascending higher we met people who were coming down who just told us to keep going. No one really gave out details. About 25 mins, we we neared the Buddha statue. A few mins of rest and we ascended. The next part was a bit harder with just bare rock and narrow crevices and a wrong move that could send u toppling down into the forest below.. yet no one seemed very worried. There are no guides and everything seemed wrong from what I read. Only when we reached the top did we realise we had climbed the more arduous pidurangala rock and that we were viewing the more spectacular sigiriya mountain just across the landscape. From here u could actually see the staircase on the sigiriya mountain!! Having successfully reached the top we made our way carefully down with the resolve to conquer sigiriya the next morning. The rainy season had begun and we prayed the rains would hold on for a few hours the next day just like it did that evening.
Sigiriya is a guided tour and not so dangerous/tiring. What tests your nerves is the steep metal staircase which can turn your legs to jelly if u try to look down. The schoolchildren aged lesser than 10 years climbing up with us with zero fear made us not want to quit. We preserved and reached the top in about 40 mins with a break at the lions paws. The view from the top is beautiful but I guess it feels much more beautiful because you have conquered your own fears and feel like an Olympian ! The way down the metal staircase is not easy and then down the narrow and sandy cemented steps . The walk to the see the frescoes ( atop a spiral staircase) can still feel ethereal. It’s definitely a once in a lifetime experience- all u need is some guts , prayers and a bottle of water .

We recently climbed Lion Rock and the experience was really beautiful. Admission costs $35, but children under 6 do not pay, which is very valuable for families. We arrived around 10am, and the ascent and descent took us about 2 hours to 2 hours 15 minutes.
We had with us a 3-year-old and a 5-month-old baby. Although carrying the baby is not obvious, climbing is feasible if you have a minimum of physical condition and take your time. At times, the step can be quite congested, but this does not detract from the interest of the visit. The views are simply splendid and really worth the effort.
I recommend this experience to those looking for a unique adventure with breathtaking scenery.

A steady climb up lots of steps and then the final push is up a metal staircase fixed to the rock. The views from the top are incredible, as are the ruins. It was very busy when we went up, about 08:30 in the morning, so be prepared for some queues and walking up slowly behind others.
On the way back down you can go up a spiral staircase and see some ancient cave paintings. The museum at the car park is also worth visiting, we did this after climbing the rock so keep your ticket for entry.
There are a lot of guides who want to show you around and tell you about the history. The path is really clear, just follow the hordes of people in front of you, so you really don’t need a guide unless you really want someone talking to you all the way around.
It is quite expensive at $35 each for foreigners. If you have the money then it’s worth doing but if not go to Pigtuangala rock instead. It’s quieter, the views are equally spectacular if not better and it only costs 1000 LKR each.

Visiting Sigiriya Rock was an interesting experience, offering a fascinating glimpse into Sri Lankan history and breathtaking natural beauty. The ticket costs $35 per person, and while tour guides are available for around SLR 5000 (though you might hear higher quotes), we opted to explore on our own. Thanks to the wealth of well-written online articles and historical guides, it was easy to understand the site's rich history without needing a guide, who we were told by other visitors would rush us at all times (they only give you 2 hrs to climb up & come down, so limited stops enjoying the views).
For the best experience, plan your climb during sunrise or about an hour before sunset. The early or late hours allow you to avoid the scorching midday sun and enjoy spectacular views. The climb itself is around 30 minutes to the top, but we took longer on the descent, pausing to capture photos and watch playful monkeys along the way.
The journey from the ticket counter to the rock is equally enchanting. The path winds through lush greenery, serene lily ponds, and ancient ruins. If you choose a sunrise visit, you can always take your time to enjoy these sights on your way back down.
A couple of practical tips: there are no bathroom facilities on the way up, so plan accordingly. Bathrooms are only available near the ticket area. The climb involves 1,200–1,500 steps, so prepare for a bit of a workout.
Whether for the history, the views, or the sense of achievement, Sigiriya Rock is a must-visit. It’s an experience you’ll cherish long after your journey ends.

Yes the entrance fee is skyrocket expensive at USD36 (credit card accepted) but it was a one-off thing. My guide recommended the Pidurangala Rock where you can see the Lion rock from the top(if the view of the rock is all you wanted, not my case).
Arrived at the gate at 5am I was the first one to begin the hike. Security guard came along with me as it was still pitched dark he said there could be crocodiles wild elephants so he walked with me through the garden to the beginning of the climb.
Reason for going at 5 were to avoid the heat plus getting a perfect spot for sunrise.
Yes it’s some 1200 steps (never counted so I trusted the community) but it was easy. Made it to the top within 35 minutes with multiple stops (2 particular stops were for the dogs barking and growling like crazy…. )
The sunrise plus the mist foaming the sea of clouds was absolutely stunning
Don’t forget to visit the museum which is just outside of the main entrance!

Probably the most disappointing day out of our holiday . Having been to polonaruwa the previous day there was very little of interest to see at the top of the rock. The cave paintings are worth a look but really 35 quid pp for this place is not worth it. It's busy expensive and there's not much to see. Probably better to climb the neighbouring rock with better views and fair entrance pricing then spend the afternoon at the dambulla cave temples.
NB you can save a few quid by getting to the junction on the dambulla habanara road by bus then getting tuc to the rock and back.

I did a private 10 day tour of the highlights of Sri Lanka so can not recommend any of the various tours. I can recommend hiring a private driver for at least a few days to get you to the most interesting sites in a very efficient way. With the driver we also stopped to get coconut juice or try local curd and honey or take pictures of elephants and monitor lizards. With several people it is cost-effective and you absolutely do NOT want to try and rent a car and drive yourself unless you have a lot of previous experience with this type of traffic. Anyway…Sigirya is another must do excursion. There is quite a climb to the top, up rock and cement steps and up metal steps attached to the cliff face. If heights bother you, be aware. Hiring a guide is not expensive $12-15, and you will get lots of information. Or you can read up ahead of time and get the same info. Very interesting history of parricide, sibling rivalry, family feuds, and a playboy king who lived up top with his one wife and 500 concubines. Amazing use of water for heating and cooling, with conduits and pools and sanitary systems. Great views. Fascinating history. It reminded me a little of Egyptian ruins, and the magnificence that has been eroded by time and weather.

This is a UNESCO site and definitely worth a visit. Go early in the morning to avoid crowd especially during peak tourist season of Dec to March/April. If you are from SAARC country, carry your passport as there is a discount offered for entrance tickets. The climb is Easy-Moderate with steep sections at few places and some uneven steps. Should take about one hour to climb for somebody who is reasonably fit. The scene from top is just amazing.

Sigiriya Rock is definitely a must-see if you’re in Sri Lanka, but for me, one visit was enough! The entry fee for foreigners is $35 for adults and $20 for kids, which feels a bit steep, but it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site, so I’ll take it.
Pro tip: Bring water, a hat, and comfy shoes. And don’t forget that sunscreen—it’s a must in the heat! ☀️
On your way to the rock, you’ll see wild monkeys. They’re super cool—some have black faces, others are pink—but remember, don’t touch or feed them. They bite! Just snap a pic from a distance. 📸🐒
There’s also a museum you can visit, located in a pretty dilapidated building where you buy the tickets. It houses a replica of the paintings from Sigiriya Rock, but for the high fees they charge, I think they should at least renovate and modernize the space.
My guide shared some amazing stories about the ruins. I couldn’t help but think how cool it would be to see a 3D model of what this place looked like back then. The ruins start as soon as you cross the moat, not just at the top!
It gets crowded, so go early. You’ll avoid the rush and the scorching noon sun. It’s a total win-win. 🌅
And about those comfy shoes… you’re going to need them! There are over 1,200 steps to reach the top, so get ready for a leg workout. 🏋️♀️
Along the way, you’ll find other cool sights. There’s a cave shaped like a king cobra, boulders forming an archway, and ancient pools. It’s pretty amazing to see.
At the top, it’s mostly ruins, but the views make it totally worth it. Plus, the wind up there is a nice break from the heat. It kind of makes you think about the people who built it—reminds me of Machu Picchu! 🏞️
Don’t miss the cave paintings of the women—they’re stunning. The way down is easier, but be careful, as the steps are steep and narrow.
Keep an eye out for a cool tree on your way down—it’s like a white birch wrapped around a darker tree. So unique!

Yes, it is expensive, yes you will sweat, and yes it is scary- but still worth it!
The ticket office now opens at 5, for those who want the sunrise, but we started our climb just after 6, so daylight, tuk tuk available, nice light and still not too hot or crowded. We are not young, or fit, and I suffer from vertigo…..but we made it up in about forty minutes, even allowing for both photo stops and puffing stops. Not only are the rock and views stupendous, but the brick work of the ruins is incredible, photogenic and not always mentioned.
If you are aware of it, it is easy to exit the way you came in to enjoy the gardens, moats, museum etc after your climb.
If you don’t want a guide or helper, just be clear with your “no thank you”
Try to go early and avoid local holidays etc to minimise crowds
I don’t know why TA wants to know what tour you are on??? We just visited independently- no tour, but it said “required field”

Is there any services Avi able by locals who would help carry and guide our kid with us ? Kid would be 6 year old and roughly 20 KG weight. Thanks

Hi, all:
Is there an active monastery up on Sigiriya Lion Rock?
Can people stay in the Sigiriya Lion Rock manastery for 1 month retreat ?
Appreciate if any one have an itinerary to share? Trip will be for 2925
Thx
Written October 12, 2024
Sigiriya is a 5th century castle complex thst is now mostly in ruins. It is not a moanstery. What you find at the top of the rock is the ruins of the castle. You cannot stay there. If you are visiting Sigiriya there are many hotels nearby. Or you can even make a day trip from Dambulla, Kandy etc. You would only need maximum 2-3 hours to cover Sigiriya.
I don't think there is any functioning Monastery in Sri Lanka that offers accommodation for tourists. But if you are looking for a meditation retreat, then there are many monasteries and other institutions all over the country that offer accommodation.

Hi , how difficult is the climb ? I have a 9 month old baby , do you think it's doable or would be very difficult to climb the stairs with the baby .
Also if anyone has an itinerary can you please share . I am planning to visit in August end with my wife and 9 month old kid
Written July 21, 2023
It’s not a hard climb but the heat is the difficult element. Going early morning to avoid the heat and crowds is my best advice so you can walk up at your own pace. It’s stairs all the way to the top well worth the effort. Having a 9 month baby in a back or front carrier will be possible. Take water to drink and a spare dry t-shirt to change into.
Written July 21, 2023
There are toilet facilities in the museum at the bottom and again a toilet block along the walk between the museum and the start of the climb. There are no toilets once you’ve started up the rock but I believe there are some once you’ve descended.

Has anyone had any problems with the online booking system for Sigiriya ?
I booked 2 tickets online a few days ago and have received no confirmation or receipt. I've e-mailed CCF to ask them to supply a confirmation, but had no reply (so far).
