The royal baths are one of the sites to see when you are visiting Polonnaruwa, still in very good condition.

Once the royal bath and swimming pool hasn't lost its charm.
The place is not so far from the royal palace.
Watch out for the guy with his snakes, he ask ridiculous amount of money!

Near the Council Chamber are the Royal Baths. A square superimposed on a cross gives the royal swimming pool a unique look. What is striking is the architecture.

Polonnaruwa is all about immersing yourself in the cultural and religious beauty of the past. Kumara Pokuna is a good example.

Perhaps not as grand as the twin Royal Ponds in Anuradhapura but still worth a look down a flight of steps from the Kings Chambers. Yes it may be old an dirty, but just marvel at how it must have been in the King's time and the ornate carvings and the manner in which water was collected and channelled to this pond. All part of the great ancient site of Polonnaruwa and glad our guide took us to this site.

These are quite spectacular baths and have survived exceptionally well. Various carvings to explore and again marvel at the skill of the ancients, who created this grand pleasure centre.

These were once the royal baths back in the day and they are well enough preserved to see how grand they must have been in tbeir heyday
They are beautifully ornate and though from the outside the complex is a high rectangle, the waters inside make the shape if a cross with a lotus flower design in the middle.
It has a wonderful detailed moonstone at the entrance and numerous carved lions abound.
I agree with other reviews on TripAdvisor that advised hiring a guide. We did and learned more than we ever would have from display boards or books. By a guide I mean we hired one to take us around Polonnaruwa, not just these baths!
Anyway, well worth building into any visit to the archaeological complex.

These are the Royal Baths that date back to the 11/12th century and have an unusual design - in that the outside is a square and the inside is a cross! In the centre of the bath is a carved stone lotus flower. there are carved lions round the outside and a neat "moonstone" at the pool entrance.
