This was one of the very many sites we experienced thanks to our expert guide Palitha. Hatadage is located nearby many other important sites (Sacred Quadrangle / Citadel / Vatadage) and is best seen with a guide (to maximize time and to gain insight into...More

Opposite the beautiful watadage in the sacred quadrangle this structure was supposedly two storied with the top portion completely gone. Again believed to have built to house the tooth relic at one point of time. Has three Buddha statues within it.

This is a really nice building which I enjoyed greatly. I felt that the decision to suspend a large plastic tarpaulin over the images was bizarre, unnecessary and detracted from the feel of the place. You will visit this part of the site for sure...More

Nothing truly spectacular about this one. Kind of gets lost in the maze of ruins. Can give it a pass.

As soon as you enter the elevated area of the Dalada Maluwa, the Hatadage is on the right, whereas the Vatadage is on the left. Compared to the other structures within the are, this I would say is only average.

The Hatadage is located in the crowded Quadrangle area and just wasn't as impressive as the other monuments / relic chambers in the area (such as the Vatadage). We didn't even take a photograph of this one. Our guide book says that the Hatadage may...More

Didn't grab me as much as the nearby Vatadage. There's a saturation point you'll hit on your day long trip through the ancient city, so use your energy sparingly. I spent five minutes here, just glancing around.

Another of the tooth-relic chambers located at Polonnaruwa. It is rather a plain building, which has lost its upper story. The central statue is aligned with with the entrance to the Vatadage that is located opposite. Take a photo and move on.

There are three Tooth Relic Temples in Polonnaruwa, one built by each of the rulers during their reign. This was built by the last king, who came from India and converted to Buddhism. He is said to have built this structure in 60 days, thus...More
