Gleaming white, its name means ‘milk white temple’. It was built by Karakramabahu to honour Subadra, his wife and queen. It has been minimally restored. It still has its original lime plaster. It soars 95’/29m in height with a hefty circumference of 280’/85m.

This is a stupa believed to have been erected by Parakramabahu-1 on behalf of his consort Queen Subadra. The name Kirivehera literally means 'milk stupa' and probably took its name from the many layers of shining white lime wash originally painted on the surface of the structure.

Interersting and certainly one to cross off on your tour but I have to say it is just another Stupa. After a bit they become somewhat 'OK Seen that let's move on' . It is notable for being white and hey ho without meaning to be irrelevant it is just another Stupa.

Only ancient Dagaba( chiththiya) with original plastering
This is the only ancient Dagaba( chiththiya) with original plastering you can see in Sri Lanka. A testimony to ancient architectural marvel, it’s situated among vast area of ruins believed to be an ancient Buddhist monastery.

This is one of the rare stupa with it's original plaster. It has been painted a lot, but, the plaster is original. Milky stupa is made by king Nissankamalla during his reign 1187-1196 AD. Located just very close to Lankathilaka image house. One of the alters around this stupa has been renovated by the archaeological department.

second biggest stupa in Polonnaruwa today. Also it is the only stupa to survive the 900 years of forces of nature and still is in the original condition.
This is believed to be the 2nd biggest stupa in Polonnaruwa today. Around the stupa, there are many small brick structures in the shape of stupas which are believed to be burial chambers of high priests.

This large white stupa is located near the Lankathilaka. It is reputed to have been built by Queen Subadra, one of the wives of King Parakramabahu 1. It's original name was Rupavathi Stupa.
Sign 91 on site states that it probably derives it's present name from the fact that the lime plaster of the dome is better preserved than most other stupas in Polonnaruwa. An impressive sight, the second highest stupa on site at 24.5m height.
