Make sure you are there for the feeding time. We reached in the evening and saw the elephants bathing in the river. even though it is not permitted there were a lot of hawkers selling fruit packets for feeding the elephants. The full heard moving back was an amazing site. It was fun to watch the baby elephants drink milk... More

The orphanage didn't worth the foreigner price, 3500 rupees. Honestly, those elephants hardly moved and were not treated nicely by the guardian. But by the river near the orphanage, we found impressive view of dozens of elephants playing in the water. It was just fantastic and amusing!

The orphanage is home to hundreds of adult and baby elephants that roam around a beautiful piece of land and bathe in a big river. We were late to feeding time, but managed to catch the bathing time of the elephants in the river. We had some drinks at a restaurant directly facing the river where you get a nice... More

Love it! There are hundreds of elephants who wander down to the nearby river after feeding time, twice a day to take a long cooling bath. You can follow them down to the river, feed them bananas and take as many selfies as you like. Costs are interesting tough, foreigners pay 10x more than locals... even though rates are low,... More

Amazing way to view the elephants as they are mostly roaming free (with minders around) although the minders are very pushy to take your camera and snap a pic so you'll tip them. Make sure to plan so that you can catch the elephant feeding and bathing. 2500LKR entrance fee (well worth it)

The Pinnawala Elephant orphanage is an amazing way to view elephants in the wild. As you walk in, you see them roaming freely (with watchful minders all around) the minders seem a little pushy trying to take your camera and "help" you take a pic so you'll pay them. Otherwise a nice experience petting the elephants and just watching them.... More

Loved being at the riverfront watching the elephants batching and playing in the water. We ate at a restaurant which had a birds eye view of the river and the kids wouldn't budge from there. They wanted closer views and went right next to the river. Everyone enjoyed seeing the elephants march up the road at the end of the... More

We were staying in Kalutara and travelled for a half day trip to Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage first thing in the morning. Before going I had some reservations as I had heard the elephants were in chains. However, the majority of the elephants are running around free over a large spot of land. The only animals I saw with chains on... More

I had reservations as I thought this may be a cruel circus, overall I was impressed with what I saw, our guide explained to us that some of the elephants were saved and others were evidence in an elephant theft crime, whether or not this was true I don't know but made me feel more at ease. I thought the... More

I went to visit the orphanage thinking the elephants would be free to walk around instead the elephants were chained sometimes chained with both front and back legs to a pillar. The workers were shouting at the elephants demanding they follow instructions and I also witnessed a worker prodding an elephant with a metal spike. Two baby elephants were stuck... More
