Interesting and informative tour by friendly, well spoken lady. Fantastic batik creations of all sizes and prices. No forced sale or pressure to buy but you won’t be able to resist as it’s all so lovely!

Been here during my stay in Kandy. Batik museum/ Batik factory will be in every traveler's list or tourist agency's proposed schedule. In realty, it is a small workshop located in every part of Kandy, where they use wax and color (and some chemicals, of course) to give a different perspective to cloth making. We spent an hour here to understand the procedures which was shown around to us very patiently, by the lady manager. It was definitely informative on our part. Liked it. The variety of products kept here and pricing is not what I would suggest anyone to go for, without a tough bargain. I personally, didn't pick up anything, but, I am sure the prices are quite steep. Good luck and enjoy. Date of Experience : March 2019.

The shop is nice, and you get a good introduction to the process of making the color print. The dresses and print painting are all handmade. Be aware of the prices. They are not cheap so make sure you bargain for a good price before they start finalizing the dress or image for you. are all handmade. Be aware of the prices. We were brought to Gunatilake Batiks by our driver guide, and upon arrival we were greeted by a member of staff who then informed us of the basics of this craft including the dying of the materials and the craft and expertise of the ladies involved in creating the designs on the fabric. I thought it was very interesting. After our briefing we were led into their huge showroom where there is a very colourful and varied collection of fashions and Batik material for sale. We didn't particularly wish to buy anything, (not that we didn't like the products we just wouldn't have known what to do with them once we'd returned home), although if you like souvenirs or need presents then, there are many fine things to choose from. I wouldn't know if you can grab a bargain here or not as we didn't really study their prices, but I would say that Batik creation is very labour intensive and highly skilled, so I would expect prices to reflect this. My only negative comment concerning our visit was that we were followed everywhere and "chaperoned" around the sales floor. We weren't left on our own at all, so we felt a little awkward in browsing. It would have felt more comfortable to have had time to ourselves so if either of us wanted to buy anything we could have discussed this without a member of staff on our shoulder. It just didn't feel relaxed.
