This is supposed to be a place of worship (temple) but foreigners are charged exorbitant fees. My son and I were not as we looked Sri Lankan but my son's wife was charged. When we informed them she was my son's wife, they wanted us to produce a marriage certificate. Who carries marriage certificates when travelling and which country issues passport in supposedly married names? This is the 21st century Sri Lanka, women don't change their names and passports are issued in the name you are born with......
Other countries should charge Sri Lankans higher fees in retaliation. My daughter-in-law refuses to visit places that charge her more than us. What discrimination!!

What an amazing visit. So full of history. Use one of the many guides who speak various languages if you do not already have one. If you go during the prayers times its hectic but you get to experience the music and view the tooth relic. Other times you can stroll the grounds and visit the museum. A must visit if you are in Kandy

Beautiful and one of the most sacred place in Sri Lanka. But was really disappointed to see that even after charging foreigners a fee to visit and worship the sacred tooth relic officers in charge let local people go in without staying in the line which they were suppose to.
If people suppose to line up it should be equal to everyone.
But very hard to explain to some our own local people. Very Sad though.

This is the museum located inside the Sri Dalada Maligawa itself.
This is not the museum about the Raja tusker, nor the Buddhist museum located behind the Sri Dalada Maligawa, nor the museum about the Kandyan kingdom.
This museum is about the history of the Sri Dalada Maligawa itself, from the time it was a palace, to now. It shows the damage occurred to the building from the terrorist attack in January 1998 & how it was restored.
It also has historical items such as clothes, jewellery, pottery, & things used for arts & sculpture by the kings who used it as a palace, plus lots of original letters & scrolls.
It also showcases multiple gifts presented to the Sri Dalada Maligawa from different foreign kings.
The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because some of the showcases are not labelled properly for the viewers to know what we're reading about.
Still a worthwhile visit for locals & foreigners alike & I definitely recommend it.
Entrance costs Rs20 for locals & free for foreigners, because they have to pay to enter the Sri Dalada Maligawa premises anyway.
Open daily until 6.30pm

We visited here with our guide who is a Buddhist. This was beneficial as he was able to explain with enthusiasm all aspects of the temple and surrounding buildings. It is quite crowded and some people, locals and tourists, will push past or queue jump! It is very conservative, I wore long shorts to every other temple (including Cambodia/Thailand) but trousers or a shawl to completely cover your legs are required here. Your shoulders must also be completely covered. These rules apply to men also. It is fascinating and make sure you are there for the loud drum ceremony when they make the offerings! These are at 530am, 930am and 630pm.

(Just an FYI: The elephants are only there for significant holidays.) Our visit was during a holiday time, so it was crowded. It was a very interesting insight into the practice of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. Since we enjoy visiting historical sites and now live & work here, it was also a very good learning experience. Please note, if you are a woman, be sure to wear a top with sleeves or have a shawl to wrap around your shoulders--no shorts allowed. You will be required to remove your shoes which you can store for a small fee at the gate.

The museum houses important documents and photographs that chronicle the temple’s history, including the relic’s transfer from various places to Kandy

Hi Leona,
I thought it was interesting that you say they discriminated, but you had already paid two cheap admissions that you say weren't really valid.
Perhaps I misinterpreted your review? 🤔
