A cool quiet corner of Kandy to look at beautiful paintings

We heard about Rangala House Gallery while staying at Rangala House so visited when in Kandy town. Well worth the visit, plenty of choice of paintings to suit all tastes and unusual postcards all by local Artists and very helpful and pleasant staff. Well worth a visit.

A little art haven in Kandy
Feb 2016 • Couples
Although Kandy is the second largest city in Sri Lanka - there is a dearth of arts and culture venues that aren't specifically laid on for tourists- this gallery is therefore a very welcome addition particularly as it displays very affordable work by current Sri Lankan Artists. There is a good mix of work ranging familiar Sri Lankan scenes to more abstract pieces. Highly recommended either for browsing or purchasing something special.

Local, affordable, beautiful artwork - a cut above the usual tourist tat

We happened upon this little gallery while browsing around the area outside the Tooth temple - there are some real tourist traps around there which is what made this place so refreshing. It's upstairs above the Selyn shop (also worth a visit - nice handwoven toys and cloth).
There was a really helpful manager who said the art work - watercolours and bold acrylics on canvas - is mostly by Colombo artists. Lots of beautiful typically Sri Lankan images (silhouettes of monks, elephants in the processions) but also some really striking abstract works. Prices from about $45 which seems very reasonable for original artwork! I wanted to take most of it home. Also a great place to buy postcards which aren't the usual dodgy, dated photos!
My young daughter ran around counting the buddhas in the pictures, and no-one minded, which is unlike most stuffy galleries I've been to!
