DO NOT GO !!!! I can’t stress enough how much of a scam this place is … products are cheap, do not do what the guide says, are not labelled and are rubbish. They serve you tea and I wonder what was in it as we spent a lot of money and had to throw the lot away .. two very cautious intelligent people so big questions there !!! Avoid

On our recent rip our tour guide stopped at this so called spive garden. There was nothing other than a green pepper, & Cardomum. The sales perso who was showing us around took us to their shop which sells so called pure Ayurvedic products.
He put a lot of stuff in the basket and at check out we discovered it had cost us almost $600 US.
We came home and opened one of the products ,labelled Sandalwood Oil only to discover that it was a gel with faint smell of sandalwood.
I do no think they have license to produce and sell Ayurvedic products. None of their packing has any date or manufacturers name .I have written to the Sri Lankan Tourist Authority & have not received a reply.
AVOID SPICE GARDEN TOURS & DO NOT BUY SPURIOUS PRODUCTS like we did.

Thank you for your review. First of all we need to tell that there is no obligation for every tourists visiting our garden to buy spices. Our only aim is to educate about sri lankan spice those who visit here from another countries. Entrance to our place is free.we provide many more services without any cost.If you need to take natural medicine from us we have an Ayurveda doctor with us.And we provide another activities like Toddy tapping, Cinnamon peeling, Oil extracting,Cookery demonstration,Rope & Coir manufacture etc.All the above services are totally free.I think now it is clear why we have got to increase the prices of the goods to cover up all those expenses. another thing is our products are 100% naturally, pure, our own productions. So we totally responsible those what we sell. Once again we need to tell that there is no obligation to buy anything from us. We would be more than pleased to show around the garden to one who entrance.

As other comments. I also believe the travel agent and the drivers have links for commission on the products u buy,
I booked my trip through hansana tours and travels and disappointed that with all these negative comments this place was included in the trip when there are some many other places available,

Not only we we're shortchanged on the product by the over price but also wrong products given. Was assured almost 10 times that e could contact them via email if need assistance but until the end no address given.

It's a total rip off . Please avoid going to this place.

Sanduni

If you are organizing another trip please take into consideration the comments.

This village is slickly run and touristy, but it’s well presented and a nice way to spend an hour or two. The guided tour through the gardens was informative and ‘free’ and our kids enjoyed the various displays and mini-activities along the way. Of course, you’re encouraged to buy product and tip the staff so it ended up being a very costly excursion.

Be warned; the products here are grossly expensive (we only realised this after visiting other Ayurvedic centres) and the packaging looks good but it’s impractical to the point being irresponsible. Once you remove the colourful outer cellophane, in almost all cases you’ll find an ugly, completely unidentifiable bottle/tub underneath with no labelling, no usage instructions and no expiry date. Also, after arriving home and unwrapping my ‘Turmeric cream’ I found they’d given me the wrong product (it had an altogether different colour & texture to the cream we been shown during the tour) so I wasn’t happy about that either.

I’d recommend against visiting but for one thing; the products work. I caught a cold in India which had turned into a deep and nasty cough by the time we reached Kandy. Our guide said ‘they have medicine at this place to fix your chest’ and he was right. I purchased the Ginger cough mixture with scepticism because I get one or two of these infections every year and the cough always lasts for weeks, but voila!, it was gone after 3 days of taking the syrup. I’m a keen cook and managed to give myself a nasty second degree burn a few days ago. I used their Aloe Vera cream on the blister (which reminded me to write this review) and the pain receded almost immediately. The burn healed extraordinarily quickly.

So my amended advice is to go ahead and visit, but buy with caution. Insist on a discount, double-check everything and only buy products you genuinely need. If you do buy something, make sure you cut the label off the outer wrapping and stick it onto the container or better still, ask the staff to properly label your purchases and provide full instructions before you hand over your money.

A Very expensive place to buy ayurvedic medicine . Be ware of the guides .We were from the start lied to by the sales man Sunil ,about it being a government garden and the oversold on the doses required to cure stuff . Don't forget to ask for the copy of the doses as they conveniently forget to give it to you . The most important is don't forget to ask for a discount .

Our tour guide was advised to bring me and my husband there, only a day into our trip. It wasn't on our agenda. And when we went down, we were immediately approached by what would turn out to be our "tour guide."

It quickly became apparent that our "tour guide" just wanted to sell us products. His lines were memorized. It was like he was reciting a script and we were just faceless tourists. We were only tourists and he was going to sell us something by the end of our walk-through no matter what. He showed us everything from tonics to ENSURE smokers would quit to hair removal and everything in between. We didn't smoke, we had no joint problems, we had hair on our heads, but he kept going. He was determined we BUY something from this "government owned" place (his words).

Finally we ended our tour in the shop. How convenient. He stuck around and walked us through the products he'd just gone over with us. In the end I figured I would just buy the"natural" hair removal product. This is the perfect "Buyer beware" story because I ended up spending over $100 only because I still wasn't familiar with the currency yet.

The product turned out to be nothing more than a "Nair" that they may have mixed "natural" ingredients with. I still cringe at the thought of what we ended up paying so that guy would end his hounding. And to add to it, he wanted to sell us other stuff - like what I purchased wasn't enough!

That was the only place in Sri Lanka I felt completely ripped off. If there ever was a "snake oil salesman," he was it. And I'm the fool who paid the money - I succumbed to the pressure.

Nest cheaters which are connected with drivers. First, they take you on a tour of medicinal plants, which are tiled in the woods. Then you do head massage, where you have to tip the masseurs at the end of this technical trick in the purchase, where so-called "Doctor" throws things without a price in the basket. When I asked for the price showed me on the screen price of 7100 rupees, while I paid by card but it was on the statement of 71000 rupees! These people are a disgrace Sri Lanka!

Went with family of 12 and all the woman bought different products such as hair removal, scar/stretch mark removal, etc. Non of the products work at all, the hair removal is just Veet sold in different packaging to overprice. Do not go there is a trap just to get money out of you

Anyone going to Sri Lanka, please beware of this place! We were brought there by our guide, when it wasn't even included in our tour. He wanted only a commission from there.
We toured the garden, were assured of the veracity of the products, didn't want to buy much but were "forced" into it. And we paid too much for everything to anything!
The hairs removal cream is just Veet or Nair, temporary. My hubby bought the Hemmoroid syrup but since it was too evident that it's a scam, he still haven't tried out of fear. You can also get spices much cheaper anywhere else.
Please, anyone, be careful lest you damage your health or skin.

Recently visited this place (December 2013). It is a vast rip-off. Look VERY carefully at the prices of anything you wish to buy. There are no labels on the products and no advice on using them. A pleasant visit, the tea and massage is enjoyable, but just leave 200 LKR tip and be very careful about what you buy in the shop. We were disappointed our driver took us there as otherwise we were very pleased with his services.
