A truly impressive place to visit, they gave us a warm welcome and tour of the factory. If you like anything wooden it is really a place to see what some passionate craftsman can do in creating small and large impressive ornaments and furniture that will amaze and impress anyone. We ended up buying a coffee table which we had shipped back to the UK and has now become a centre piece in our living room, we love it and it has been well admired by friends. So pleased we went to Oak Ray as it wasn't somewhere we had thought of going to when we set up our original itinerary .

We found the perfect elephant but someone had bought it already. A few discussions later and we agreed that they would paint us a replica elephant and deliver it to Merissa ......a trip of 6 hours. The elephant was delivered exactly as Dasun promised. We were even sent pictures along the way showing each stage of the painting
Amazing experience overall - you could spend a fortune in the factory as everything is beautiful and made to such a high standard
I cannot recommend Oak Ray Carvings enough - totally trustworthy and incredible service.
Our elephant is now safely on display back in the UK

Visited whilst on holiday in Sri Lanka. We ordered a one off design of the Sri Lankan lion after discussion. We also ordered two wall hangings to be sent. We bought a small elephant which we were very pleased with so when we got home ordered one the same size but different which was added to the parcel sent. All arrived safely and quickly. We had only seen the lion on a drawing and he is magnificent and we are very pleased. The service and assistance with order has been very satisfactory. Perhaps it is good that we do not live closer as would buy more items as of high quality. Would recommend for a visit.

An amazing shop with great options for gifts and personal items. Excellent quality of the products and great service from the employers. Especially Mr Douglas who tried to meet our needs and gave us everything we needed.
A great choice to shop anything you need in Kandy, I highly recommend it.

We had a very interesting visit to this wood carving factory/shop. A gentleman explained about all the woods they use and the techniques used. We even had a go at wood carving ourselves. Spent ages going round deciding what to buy. Some very beautiful pieces there. Definitely recommend a visit.

Pros: Generally high quality products and it seems they have various versions of the typical tourist items (masks, elephants, etc.)- all under one roof. It's a good place to figure out what you may want to purchase later. Lots of furniture.
Cons: Even after major negotiation, the price is still 3-4 times what you'll pay in most tourist shops. The difference in quality doesn't make up for the difference in price.
I didn't see the negative reviews until after we shopped there. We're happy with what we purchased but not happy with the price based on similar items we saw for sale in smaller mom and pop shops in other tourists areas in the country.

I had a wonderful experience at the store, learning about how they have made paint from natural resources for years. I purchased a beautiful hand carved and hand painted custom elephant, which was shipped to me in the United States. The elephant is absolutely amazing and perfect and the customer servicewas excellent

I visited the Oak Ray Handcrafted Wood Carvings store during my trip to Sri Lanka and bought a large Buddha statue from them.
They packaged the statue very well and shipped it to my home in the U.S.A. The UPS, the shipping company, screwed up the shipping and the statue got lost and damaged during the shipping.
While this was very frustrating indeed, the store management and the owner were working with me for weeks and helped me get a full refund!!
This store has great products and its management is trustworthy and attentive - they REALLY take care of their customers.
I HIGHLY recommend you to visit this store in Kandy!!

We visited the shop in looking for a larger carved elephant. After looking we noticed a brass elephant that was gorgeous! We asked about shipping etc. and were told shipping and insurance was included. we purchased the elephant, it was shipped by UPS and arrived 3 weeks later. It was very well packaged and received as ordered.
As a point of interest this was the only shop we visited that included shipping. Other shops said "you have to coordinate shipping!!!!!" Oak Ray Kandy made it easy to buy and sent tracking information etc. in a timely manner. Very happy with our elephant!

This is about the shop in Ella. I brought a beatiful wood Elefant with nature painting and they helped me with everything. The packeged the elefant very carefully to flight, they also gave me packing tape. They even texted me just to check if the trip home had gone well

Mr Dee you are absolutely right Oak Ray Wood Carvings is a shop full of villains. When you enter the shop they must be saying to themselves "here comes another mug , lets see how much money we can squeeze out of him". Unfortunately they squeezed £1500 out of me when I bought a coffee table of teak which split right across the top after 3 months -the manager didn't want to know when I complained. There is a government LAKSALA in Colombo which is honest and above board. If I had only known!

I bet you the manager hasn't compensated you as he promised. I know from experience since I bought the same table myself for the same price.

Don't count your chickens -you probably paid a bomb for the elephant and if you are lucky it is teak. Wait a few months to see whether cracks will develop on the surface of the elephant and then I assure you , you will be on your own because Oak Ray don't have any after sales service -they don't care about you once you have paid up . Let me advise you that next time you go to Sri Lanka insist that the taxi takes you to the government shop called LAKSALA , in Colombo where the prices are much lower and the products are genuine. In Kenya I bought an ebony elephant bigger than the one on your photo for £100 and I paid for another one in rosewood for £80.

You are right Abheek, the actual wood carving is not done in the factory ,as claimed by Oak Ray ,but in the villages by the exploited village craftsmen who earn a pittance compared with the 10x mark up that Oak Ray wood carvings charge us. You are better off buying in the government shop LAKSALA which is a genuine state sponsored shop where you will be given good after sales service. All the local taxis know LAKSALA but don't take you there because they get no commission from them . Insist that the taxi takes you there please and never fall into the trap again. My cracked coffee table is testament to crooks that Oak Ray are.

YES IT DOES PROVIDE A LEARNING EXPERIENCE -HOW TO GET ROBBED AND FLEECED IN BROAD DAYLIGHT !!!
Oak Ray is an unscrupulous company who preys on unsuspecting clients brought in by local taxis who want a nice commission. Please don't fall into the trap and spoil your Sri Lanka holiday visiting Oak Ray. Go to the government run souvenir shop LAKSALA instead .

Mr Tai Sheng for your info I bought the same table in teak but hand painted in natural dyes_ I paid £1450 for it plus transport. I live in London where it gets cold in winter and within 8 months my table top cracked from one end to another . If where you live is cold and you use heating then your table will surely crack because the wood is not export quality for cold countries. If you live in a hot country you might be OK . If you want to see the cracks on my table go to Youtube and search for "Oak ray wood carvings kandy sri lanka". It is the first video you see on the first page. My table is like yours but handpainted. When I complained to Oak Ray Wood carvings they didn't compensate me in any way - just made promises they didn't fulfil . Next time please go the Government shop in Colombo called "LAKSALA" and they will sell you good quality goods with good after sales service.

The Sri Lankan shop LAKSALA is 50 percent cheaper too.

You were lucky you weren't taken in by Oak Ray Wood Carvings like the rest of us were .Please direct all your complaints against Oak Ray Wood Carvings to the following website which is the Sri Lankan Tourist Authority
Look for SLTDA in google and find the section on complaints. They will give your complaint fair attention . Unfortunately Trip Advisor don't allow any websites or web addresses in their pages .

You are absolutely right but did you know about the government shop called LAKSALA in Colombo which is reasonably priced with excellent after sales service ? It is well worth a visit . The taxi drivers don't take you there because they are not enticed with commissions. Oak Ray Wood Carvings are there to con you and provide you with zero after sales service . I am talking from bitter experience -I bought a table for £1450 and after a few months it developed deep cracks on the surface -Oak Ray didn't want to know.
Written June 9, 2018
Sorry about the Oak Ray scam . What I would like to know is did the wooden item you bought develop cracks in various places like mine did ??? I paid double what you paid.
