Once it was a palace, now that palace so proudly holds the scared tooth relic of load Buddha.Be mindful, whenever you visit the temple, you must dressed accordingly otherwise security would not allow to go in. Dress code is long fully covered white dress. Don’t wear caps, hats. Weekend and Poya days are crowded. Within the temple, there are museums, bookstores and souvenir shops can be found.

Have you been before in Sri lanka ? It was my first time there . We decided to go from Colombo to Kandy, for 1 day visit .
We were very lucky to have a good driver . You need to choose a good driver there!!!!!
The trip to Kandy is 3 hours , heavy traffic, thousands of cars, dangerous roads. But if you have a good driver
1, it takes less of your time,
2, probably you will not die in car accident .
3, you will have less grey hairs at the end of the day.

Our driver was Sudath , your can find his name etc on the net. Sulankatours his company name. Good driver,Very good driver !!!!
nice , intelligent personality , fair prices, good English .

We were with him on 1 day Kandy trip from Colombo . Pick up time: 7.00 am.
3 hours drive : 1. stop elephants (personally I didn't like it , as I don"t like seeing wild animals this way. It is up to you.
2, stop: spice garden. VERY interesting , GREAT ! a lot of interesting information. wow !!!!
3. small restaurant , recommended by Sudath (the "not-fancy " version) Great , highly recomended .
4.stop.: Palace and Museum of Budhism . Great .
5.stop: ayurveda massage . We asked for this , but it was not good . Nothing special, not very clean place.
Trip back to Colombo , another 3 hours .
To summerize : worth the long day and hours in the car . We've got a lot of interesting information from Sudath about Sri lanka , customs, tradition, the way how they live, etc.

If you visit the Tooth Temple then you should also visit the Royal Palace's remains since it's inside the compound. Interesting hearing hall.

That's if the "Guides" at the door leave you alone for two minutes...This is also part of the Temple and is included in your ticket price, and is situated towards the rear of the Temple beside another little museum containing old Tusker the stuffed elephant himself. As we entered the first thing we met were the "Guides" touting to show you around for a fee of course to which I politely refused, as the last thing I needed was some "Indiana Jones" pointing out old vases and stones etc, this being due to the artefacts being clearly labelled. And will interest many people with a sense of history as it will take you back down the years explaining this fascinating place. Just remember it's not that big and won't take up much of your time either, as you leave don't forget to walk over to the main wall and admire the views of the gardens which are great photo opportunity's to be had...!

This is the Royal Palace of the last Sri Lankan King and few predecessors before that. Traditionally the Royal Palace and the King Ship should protect the Buddhism of the country and as well as protect the Tooth Relic of the Lord Buddha.

The Place house the Lord Buddhas Tooth Relic in a dedicated chamber and in a golden casket. They open the chamber three times per day for offerings and for worship. This is at 6.00 AM, 9.30 AM and 6.00 PM. Anyway tourists can visit the palace from early morning to 8.00 PM. This is a must see place in Sri Lanka and you can walk through the palace and surrounding court yards and temples.

There were lots of people there when we arrived but most were either there to actually worship or there on guided tours. Just walking around, it was hard to learn much about the place. I wish there had been more written info. Still, it was a nice area, easy to see in less than an hour, and I’m glad we went.

While the entry fee is not too much, only about $10, I refused to go in for the fact that by the time I got there I was fed up with their overcharging the tourists. For the locals (Sri Lankans) is free. They compare and match their prices with the prices in USA and other Western European Countries. What they ignore is the fact that if we charge that amount it is a necessity because we pay the workers a minimum $10 per hour, but they pay theirs around $5 per day.

The place is nice, from what I saw from outside. The nearby lake was gorgeous. As the evening was setting in, there were thousand of white birds flying over the lake or landed on a particular tree. Really nice!
