About
Some Guides and Drivers could try to recommend you another batik shop by saying that my shop is closed today or difficult to find, etc;. Please do not believe such people. Please call me or use Google map to find my store easily. My shop is situated inside the Kandy Central Market which is opposite the Kandy Clock Tower and it is not difficult to find as it is a well known local market in Kandy. The shop is open from 9.00am to 6.00pm every day. In case if the shop is closed, please call me or get a free call from the shop which is next to mine as it is a pleasure to open my store for you within next 20 minutes. Jayamali Batiks Studio, one of the most famous batik studios in Kandy, was founded in 1979 by Jayakody. He discovered his talent to create unique batik wall hangings and started the business with very few means at his home as a family business. His unique style of designing modern, artistic and unusual designs to a very high quality fascinated the foreign guests who visited his studio.

Exceptional Artistry & Design
Dec 2019
A bit difficult to find the shop but very much worth the effort. Chaminda Jayakody is truly an incredibly talented artist...and very honest as well. He meant to give us a discount on the beautiful batik we purchased, which for whatever reason did not get calculated on the bill. I didn't notice, but he did. He contacted me by email and as we were already away from Kandy, to make up for the error, he promised to send a small batik to our home in Canada. Which he did, another beautiful batik sent at his expense and certainly valued at an amount greater than the discount. Very impressive...artistry and integrity combined.

Excellent batiks with great designs
Jan 2020
Highly recommend! We spent much time with the owner today and after buying one item, we returned to purchase two more. Although his prices are higher than offered in other shops, his designs are nicer in our opinions than the typical batiks, and the quality is superior. The owner explained the history of the shop that was started by his father and described in detail the processes that are undertaken for his batiks. We also appreciated his attitude toward life, his business and the people he encounters.
Please do call ahead to make sure he will have the shop open for you - otherwise there is a good chance he won’t be there. We called both times for our visits and he didn’t mind at all to return to the shop to open it,

A small store with fantastic high quality batiks. The store is kinda hidden away but definitely worth visiting. He will tell you all about the batiks process and has a lot of different batiks in all sizes. It's more pricey than other places but the quality is much better than other places.

Great quality and great customer service!
Sep 2019 • Couples
I actually went to the central market having not read about this store, and ended up in one of the other batik stores where I got hassled the usual way and bought a batik, one of the many mass produced ones. When back at my hotel I happened to read about Jayamali Batiks and after seeing the reviews and falling in love with some of the unique designs on their website, I decided to head back to the market. My husband remembered seeing it closed when we went so I popped Chaminda a message and he replied very quickly and was happy to open the store at a time convenient for me.

Yes, the prices are not cheap when compared to stores next door, but the service and quality of the craftsmanship and uniqueness of the designs make it worth it. I was not hassled in the slightest to buy from this store (refreshing!) and in fact I was unsure about affording anything. Instead after Chaminda explained to me how the batiks are made (and I had an appreciation for the amount of work that goes into them), we had a long chat about all sorts of other things! Everything felt sincere and genuine.

I was prepared to leave not buying anything, purely because the one I wanted was too large (and too expensive for me), but only then did Chaminda point out he did have it in a smaller size if I wanted to see. It was perfect, and I bought it, a timeless simple and stylish design of a group of Indian paradise flycatcher birds which shall have pride of place in my living room.

Go along to this store and at least check it out. It’s beautiful art and a great customer experience with it!

The best day ever - making my own batik!
Mar 2019 • Friends
If you are looking for a place to buy authentic Sri Lankan handmade batik, then visit Jayamali Batiks Studio in Kandy Central market but if you would like the opportunity to make your own piece, then contact CJ, the owner and spend the day working with him, his mum and sister in his workshop. I contacted him by sheer chance to begin with. I love textiles and am fascinated by their manufacture. CJ offered me and a friend, the opportunity to make our own. I didn't know what to expect so took some designs based on Victorian cast iron drain covers(!). CJ took us through the whole process, stage by stage, providing the fabric, wax, dyes and his skill, as well as that of his mum and sister. He was so patient with us when we made mistakes and believe me, we made plenty! We used four different colours, ranging from white, yellow, orange and black and after 9 hours of work, mastering the use of the tjanting (the container for piping the wax) and liquid wax, we were able to produce a 15" square of our very own batik. It was an amazing experience. It also made us realise why hand made batik is so expensive but worth every penny.
I couldn't make up my mind as to which one of his batiks I wanted to buy, so put off my decision until I returned to England, then brought my choice down to two. Eventually, I decided to buy both - a modern peacock in blue and the monks on pray (monks at prayer) PAyPal won't operate in Sri Lanka, so I arranged with my bank to pay direct to CJ's bank and a week later both batiks arrived. I'm just off to get them professionally framed!! His whole family are a joy to be with; helpful, not judgemental, laughing and bless them, providing refreshment during our day. How to describe CJ? A brilliant teacher, gentle, talented, thoughtful, skilled as well as being a thoroughly lovely man. I can't thank him enough.
It is difficult to complete TripAdvisor's yes/no/not sure sections. Jayamali Batik Studios in Kandy market could take you an hour to have a good look round. Let CJ know when you would like to go to make sure that there is someone there. If, however, you would like to make your own batik, then give him plenty of notice as it is his job and we were obviously taking a large amount of his time. We paid him in GBP and it was worth every penny. Have a look at his website as well.
The workshop is tiny so he can't accommodate groups but he does have an interesting video of his work, which can be shown at the market shop. It would suit anyone who is interested in finding out a traditional technique of textile production and decoration. Not suitable for young children because of hot wax but fabulous for anyone else.

SO happy i visited Jayamali!!
Apr 2019 • Solo
When I read the reviews of Jayamali, I knew I had to visit. I was looking for an authentic, hand-made craft from Sri Lanka to bring home with me, and I found it! CJ was so kind, smart and passionate about his family's history of traditional batik making. He shared pictures of the entire process from start to finish. Unfortunately I didn't have time to go to the studio where they make the batiks, but if you are interested in visiting, CJ will arrange it. Don't miss this gem of a place and having a chance to meet and talk with CJ about his craft, family and country!
