About
Some Guides and Drivers could try to recommend you another batik shop by saying that my shop is closed today or difficult to find, etc;. Please do not believe such people. Please call me or use Google map to find my store easily. My shop is situated inside the Kandy Central Market which is opposite the Kandy Clock Tower and it is not difficult to find as it is a well known local market in Kandy. The shop is open from 9.00am to 6.00pm every day. In case if the shop is closed, please call me or get a free call from the shop which is next to mine as it is a pleasure to open my store for you within next 20 minutes. Jayamali Batiks Studio, one of the most famous batik studios in Kandy, was founded in 1979 by Jayakody. He discovered his talent to create unique batik wall hangings and started the business with very few means at his home as a family business. His unique style of designing modern, artistic and unusual designs to a very high quality fascinated the foreign guests who visited his studio.

    Excellent batiks with great designs
Highly recommend! We spent much time with the owner today and after buying one item, we returned to purchase two more. Although his prices are higher than offered in other shops, his designs are nicer in our opinions than the typical batiks, and the quality is superior. The owner explained the history of the shop that was started by his father and described in detail the processes that are undertaken for his batiks. We also appreciated his attitude toward life, his business and the people he encounters. Please do call ahead to make sure he will have the shop open for you - otherwise there is a good chance he won’t be there. We called both times for our visits and he didn’t mind at all to return to the shop to open it,

Plan to spend a bit more time and money than you would think but TOTALLY worth it!
Stopping by here was a definite highlight in Kandy! Chaminda took his time telling us about the intricate process of creating batik fabrics giving us an appreciation for the art form, but always shared wonderful stories about his artist father who started the business and gave us very through and thoughtful information on questions we asked about Sri Lankan culture. He also offered detailed information on what the traditional pieces meant and gave us so much detail about the moonstone piece that we had no idea about - even though they're outside every temple! Expect to spend much more time listening to his stories and knowledge than you'd expect given his small shop lol he really holds your attention and it's worth every minute! It is a little pricey, be prepared for that, but I'm excited to then my moonstone piece into a pillow! Also, there are annoying shipowners all around his shop except for his very kind neighbor. You should call him in advance before going, it seems the shop is usually "closed" but he'll come right over. Ignore the gauntlet of people and just speak to his neighbor who actually offered us chairs to wait for him which was actually a welcomed break from all our walking

    Exceptional Artistry & Design
A bit difficult to find the shop but very much worth the effort. Chaminda Jayakody is truly an incredibly talented artist...and very honest as well. He meant to give us a discount on the beautiful batik we purchased, which for whatever reason did not get calculated on the bill. I didn't notice, but he did. He contacted me by email and as we were already away from Kandy, to make up for the error, he promised to send a small batik to our home in Canada. Which he did, another beautiful batik sent at his expense and certainly valued at an amount greater than the discount. Very impressive...artistry and integrity combined.

    Breath of fresh air
One place to find on your own, a refreshing stop without the high pressure and tough sales approach that wear you down in Sri Lanka. High quality, great service, and we were very happy with a purchase and the honesty of the owner who told us about the commission system where drivers get 20-50% of the sale in kickbacks. He is fighting the system which makes buying from them even more of a treat. Outstanding high quality batiks in a friendly environment. Highly recommend this place!!

CJ the owner of this small business provided a very good service and prevented us from purchasing inferior batik products from other retailers. His Products are very high quality and beautifully designed. The prices are fair for the quality offered. We recommend him highly

    Authentic batik in Sri Lanka
I am a Sri Lankan, domiciled in Canada. When I visited Sri Lanka last month, I was looking for good (artistic and quality) batik. I searched big names for batik in Colombo and shops in Kandy, but I was not satisfied with the product. Most of the shops in the cities have very common design, and the workmanship is not up to mark. I then searched on-line, and came across Jayamali Batik. After visiting the Jayamali Batik studio in Kandy Central Market, I was very impressed with their unique design and workmanship. I met Chaminda, who is the owner, and also a second generation batik artist. Chaminda was very friendly and pleasant. He advised, and helped me choose best batiks available in the store according to my needs. At the end, I couldn’t resist, and ended up buying 4 pieces. I strongly recommend Jayamali Batik for batiks with unique design, workmanship and reasonable price.

    Quality makes the batik
Products are made with care and artistic quality compared to what you see in general in Sri Lanka. The shop owner knows his trade and takes time to advise you.

Fantastic batik artworks - best store in Kandy - highly recommended a visit
My driver had taken me to a few batik stores yesterday on my drive into Kandy and they were not my style even though I appreciated the effort involved. I also wasn't a fan of being driven to the 'tourist stop stores' which felt somewhat mandatory and made me uninterested in buying anything at all. After researching on trip advisor I found out about JAYAMALI BATIKS STUDIO and made it a priority to visit whilst in Kandy for my short stay. I am so glad I did. The designs are wonderful, with a choice of traditional and also contemporary. Colours are excellent. Owner was so lovely to deal with and not at all pushy. Choosing a design is tough as there are so many beauties and I believe all original designs ( or atleast the contemporary ones are). Shop is small but don't worry, it has so much goodness to choose from. It was a really lovely experience shopping here and I love my contemporary batik purchase. It's unlike anything I have seen to buy on my trip. The store is easy to find. I walked from my hotel with my family into town, got directions from people on the street for the Central Market and headed for the upstairs level once I got there. The market also had trinket stores at acceptable prices while I waited as I turned up whilst store was closed. Perhaps call before turning up if you don't have time but the wait was only 15mins. Highly recommend a visit and if you really want a special piece of batik, this is the place.

Found this shop today after visiting the botanical gardens and the temple. The shop was closed (about 2.30) with a note saying open by appointment. The man in the shop next door called the owner, but we would have had to wait half an hour, and it had already felt like a long hot day. A long steep drive back to our wonderful hotel, so left disappointed..

Visited this place in the central market complex in Kandy, as it had received good reviews on tripadvisor. However was a tad disappointed as there collection of batik shirts and garments were very limited. Had a good range of wall hangings which they specialize in !

Dear Sir, My shop name is "Jayamali Batiks Studio". I guess that you will have at least an average knowledge to understand the meaning of "Studio". As you have seen and as you have mentioned above I am a specialist in batik wall hangings and I have enough of different designs from modern to traditional which amaze my customers. As per my customer requests I have made some collection of batik shirts, sarongs, silk shawls, wraparounds, scarves, ladies blouses, beach wraps and many more but unfortunately you didn't spend more than 2 minutes at my store to look at them as you said that you were expecting my shop to be a big factory. At the same time you were standing outside my shop and only your wife came in for two minutes. So how can you see my shirt collection?. I do not think that just because I have a limited collection of garments my shop is an average shop. I do limited collection as I am not just another commercial product manufacturer which you call factory. I do my own original designs in good quality which you can't buy at any other shops or factories and that's why I am still the number one shop on TripAdvisor since last four years since the very first day that my shop is listed. Please note that average batik shops have average factory made commercial garments and a the No.01 shop on TripAdvisor can never have average factory made batiks for average people. Still such shops have good quality hand made batiks even for average people. If you have understood this all, I guess that you will never be disappointed. Thank you

Excellent batiks. Friendly service. This is a boutique shop. The designs will change and the range small, but only adds To the experience. Cheaper in stor than online. Easy to find, but a guide may not take you there as proprietor refuses to pay commission.
