About
Some Guides and Drivers could try to recommend you another batik shop by saying that my shop is closed today or difficult to find, etc;. Please do not believe such people. Please call me or use Google map to find my store easily. My shop is situated inside the Kandy Central Market which is opposite the Kandy Clock Tower and it is not difficult to find as it is a well known local market in Kandy. The shop is open from 9.00am to 6.00pm every day. In case if the shop is closed, please call me or get a free call from the shop which is next to mine as it is a pleasure to open my store for you within next 20 minutes. Jayamali Batiks Studio, one of the most famous batik studios in Kandy, was founded in 1979 by Jayakody. He discovered his talent to create unique batik wall hangings and started the business with very few means at his home as a family business. His unique style of designing modern, artistic and unusual designs to a very high quality fascinated the foreign guests who visited his studio.

- Maha4 contributionsBeautiful, unique art pieces! We spent 2 hours in this wonderful place looking at the very unique art pieces and clothes! In comparison to the other shop owners chaminda was very peaceful and didn't try to sell us anything just for the sake of selling something. We had really nice talks and he taught us something about patiks and buddhism! We bought some verrryy beautiful skirts and he even brought them to the tailor, since we had some special request! The pieces are real art work and you won't find any piece like another! Definitely worth the price if you understand something of arts and want to have something unique of high quality! Highly can recommend this place :))Visited November 2023Traveled with friendsWritten November 29, 2023
- Ryan RWaltham Abbey, United Kingdom17 contributionsBeautiful handcrafted Batiks from a very lovely and friendly family business. We had a lovely experience in Jayamali Batik Studio. Chaminda was very friendly and welcoming and explained in detail the work that went into making the beautiful batiks. The passion and commitment to this family business and the skills passed down by his father was clear to see! He also didn’t pressure us into buying any of his work, but we fell in love with it as he explained and guided us through the craft. We bought a beautiful peacock batik and would have loved to buy more, but will definitely be checking out his website when we are back in the UK. You should expect a higher price tag, but this reflects the time and effort that goes into the work - one that will last for many years to come! Highly recommended :)Visited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 12, 2024
- Klara L7 contributionsBeautiful wall hangings and skirtWhile traveling through Sri Lanka I was looking at various places to find some traditional handmade decorative items to bring home. The best ones that I could find were the batik products from Jayamali Batiks studio in Kandy. All the products are handmade by store owner Chaminda and his family. I got a couple of beautiful wall hangings and a silk skirt. They are special, unique and good quality products. I am looking forward to displaying these pieces of art in my house. As the wallhangings and clothes are light weight, they are perfect items to purchase while traveling (but it is also easy to have them shipped back home). I can highly recommend this business as it was for me the best art store I could find in Sri Lanka.Visited April 2024Traveled soloWritten April 28, 2024
- AJ F48 contributionsA unique, memorable and amazing experience. As a family we travel with our kids every August (as I work with schools so we make the most of our summers). We search out unique family experiences and always aim for a private encounter so our kids have some freedom to be and so we can focus where we see it working well with 4 little ones. This experience is up there with the best of them. CJ and his charming wife welcomed us into their home and guided us through the beautiful art of batik. We each designed, drew and waxed our batiks in CJ’s hand-built workshop. His kids came to join us after their school day and our kids played together on their rooftop overlooking the beautiful Kandian hills. CJ’s wife made delicious tea and served us biscuits and cake. We had an amazing day and produced some awesome batiks. Thank you!Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 18, 2024

Highly recommend! We spent much time with the owner today and after buying one item, we returned to purchase two more. Although his prices are higher than offered in other shops, his designs are nicer in our opinions than the typical batiks, and the quality is superior. The owner explained the history of the shop that was started by his father and described in detail the processes that are undertaken for his batiks. We also appreciated his attitude toward life, his business and the people he encounters.
Please do call ahead to make sure he will have the shop open for you - otherwise there is a good chance he won’t be there. We called both times for our visits and he didn’t mind at all to return to the shop to open it,

Stopping by here was a definite highlight in Kandy! Chaminda took his time telling us about the intricate process of creating batik fabrics giving us an appreciation for the art form, but always shared wonderful stories about his artist father who started the business and gave us very through and thoughtful information on questions we asked about Sri Lankan culture. He also offered detailed information on what the traditional pieces meant and gave us so much detail about the moonstone piece that we had no idea about - even though they're outside every temple! Expect to spend much more time listening to his stories and knowledge than you'd expect given his small shop lol he really holds your attention and it's worth every minute!
It is a little pricey, be prepared for that, but I'm excited to then my moonstone piece into a pillow!
Also, there are annoying shipowners all around his shop except for his very kind neighbor. You should call him in advance before going, it seems the shop is usually "closed" but he'll come right over. Ignore the gauntlet of people and just speak to his neighbor who actually offered us chairs to wait for him which was actually a welcomed break from all our walking

A bit difficult to find the shop but very much worth the effort. Chaminda Jayakody is truly an incredibly talented artist...and very honest as well. He meant to give us a discount on the beautiful batik we purchased, which for whatever reason did not get calculated on the bill. I didn't notice, but he did. He contacted me by email and as we were already away from Kandy, to make up for the error, he promised to send a small batik to our home in Canada. Which he did, another beautiful batik sent at his expense and certainly valued at an amount greater than the discount. Very impressive...artistry and integrity combined.

One place to find on your own, a refreshing stop without the high pressure and tough sales approach that wear you down in Sri Lanka. High quality, great service, and we were very happy with a purchase and the honesty of the owner who told us about the commission system where drivers get 20-50% of the sale in kickbacks. He is fighting the system which makes buying from them even more of a treat. Outstanding high quality batiks in a friendly environment. Highly recommend this place!!

Hello, is it possible to take a tour in this factory? Thank you!
Written September 19, 2019
Hello, Yes it is possible. To be honest, I am not a big factory owner but I do have a small workshop at home. If you would like to see the real process of making Batiks, you can simply visit my workshop. If you would like to know how the batik is made, you can simply visit my shop, so I can explain the process with some pictures and real sample batik with wax. No matter which one you visit please make an appointment. Thank you...

what are your opening hours ?
We are in Kandy on 23 /24th April
Written April 17, 2017
Dear Madam/Sir,
Thanks for the inquiry. I usually open my shop at 10.00 Am to 6.00 Pm but as April is the new year celebration month sometimes I get late to open the shop. Anyway if you can let me the time and the date which is possible for you to visit my shop I can open my shop at anytime you want. Or else you still can call me before one hour you come. Please let me know if you need any more information. I am looking forward to serve you.
Thank you.
(Small Advice - Please do not trust your guide or the driver by requesting to call me on behalf of you as 98% of guides and drivers in Sri Lanka always try to stop you visiting my shop with a BIG lie after calling me in front of you because I don't pay 30% to 50% commission which they always demand me to pay them if I just want them to bring my TripAdvisor customers to my shop which is so unfair. So please be carefull and call me by yourself)
