Some Guides and Drivers could try to recommend you another batik shop by saying that my shop is closed today or difficult to find, etc;. Please do not believe such people. Please call me or use Google map to find my store easily. My shop is situated inside the Kandy Central Market which is opposite the Kandy Clock Tower and it is not difficult to find as it is a well known local market in Kandy. The shop is open from 9.00am to 6.00pm every day. In case if the shop is closed, please call me or get a free call from the shop which is next to mine as it is a pleasure to open my store for you within next 20 minutes. Jayamali Batiks Studio, one of the most famous batik studios in Kandy, was founded in 1979 by Jayakody. He discovered his talent to create unique batik wall hangings and started the business with very few means at his home as a family business. His unique style of designing modern, artistic and unusual designs to a very high quality fascinated the foreign guests who visited his studio.

A true batik artist- he kindly explained the process of creating batiks from beginning to end in great detail, then proceeded to explain the meaning behind his traditional designs. Above and beyond the level of craftsmanship shown in all his pieces, which is without a doubt superior to anything else we saw during our time in Sri Lanka, we spent... More

You may have to wait 40 minutes for the owner to open the shop for you but it is well worth it. (If pushed for time call ahead as there is little else in the market of interest) I was particularly taken with his modern and unusual designs but they also produce more traditional pieces. Many people do not realise... More

CJ and his beautiful shop is a must see in Kandy. He will take the time to explain the batik process and show a huge variety of artworks and who made them. The stories behind each piece are wonderful and add depth to just having a pretty picture in the wall. The artworks are stunning. Some of the detail in... More

We got our lovely piece of art here. Having seen very low quality Batiks, these ones really stood out with quality of workmanship, color and fabric. Worth the price and more!

I was hunting for good batiks and Jayamali came highly recommended via Trip Advisor. The previous shops that we were taken to, did not even come close to what CJ displayed in his shop. The ideas and workmanship are exquisite, further enhanced by painting the fabric to highlight the figures. I was looking for one small Buddha or Lord Ganesha... More

We had a lovely time seeing all of the beautiful batik pieces here and CJ was so patient with his time as we choose among many. Thank you for the great service.

C.J. was so gracious in showing me many of the Batiks so we could make up our mind about which one to purchase. Many we loved so the decision was very difficult. The work is beautiful and the prices very reasonable. Don't miss this opportunity to see one of Sri Lanka's art forms. I doubt if you will leave without... More

I stumbled across this store earlier today, with no knowledge of batiks or intention to buy, but the wall hanging batiks were so beautiful I decided to buy one as a memento of our trip to Sri Lanka. The designers son (who runs the shop) took time to explain the process of making batiks to us and showed us a... More

I was looking for a special present for a friend who was studying batik and dying techniques. I found a beautiful silk scarf. She was thrilled.

This small shop in the middle of the second floor of Kandy's central market is without a doubt well worth pushing past the pushy salesmen at the other shops on the level. All the batik prints are handmade - not machine made (you can tell since the print is on both sides) and gorgeous original designs with Kandyan scenes, traditional... More
