2000 rupees for a 15 minute boat trip lapping around the lake we felt was good value for money. We were fortunate to be in Kandy on a very warm day which made the boat ride all the more pleasant. Good for wildlife observation and the whistle stop by boat of all the main sites of wonderful Kandy!

A pleasant focal point in the centre of the city with the complex of buildings that is the Temple of the Tooth and the Palace on one side preventing traffic circumnavigating the whole lake. Nothing exceptional photogenically or architecturally it is just pleasant. In most cities it would be even more striking and welcome amongst an expanse of concrete, but Kandy is so green and tree filled a lake feels quite normal.

Although the name of the city is associated with the Temple of the Tooth, Nuwara Wewa is one of the most prominent place in Kandy.Nuwara Wewa, which is shaded by Roberosian trees, brings a strange charm to the sunset evening. It is interesting to look at the lake along the cloud wall. Here you can experience the beauty of taking photos.

We walked around the lake in the morning. Its a nice stroll and we were able to spot lots of wildlife. Loads of fish, egret cranes, and we spotted a water monitor.
The road next to it is pretty noisy and of course you have a million tuk tuk drivers offering you the sights for 1000rs
Even a gentleman that pointed out turtles seemed just helpful... Until he mentions his tuk tuk.
Another dance teacher sparked up a conversation, told us we were lucky to be in Kandy because there's a special festival. High up Buddhists and dancers would be there and it's only for tourists, no locals. How lucky to be here on that day! We followed him to see the program, turns out its the cultural show you'll no doubt read about elsewhere... But happens nightly I believe.

Loads of birds on the far side (away from the temple of tooth) and loads of bat's in the trees on the side of the temple.

Nice walk just be prepared to get accosted. Of course!

No trip to Kandy is complete without taking a nice relaxing walk around the Lake.
We spent a lovely sunny afternoon with our 2 year old son, just slowly wandering around the pathways that circle the lake. It was a really nice, peaceful experience with lots of things to see along the way.
If you're lucky you may well spot a couple of large monitor lizards, as we did. We also saw lots of beautifully coloured birds such as kingfishers and also terrapins, small lizards, butterflies, pelicans and lots of fish.
There are people selling popcorn that you can use to feed the fish, which our son really enjoyed!
Every person that we passes smiled back at us and some stopped to say hello. Make sure you smile at everyone you come across, it's a very friendly place!
The whole walk probably took us about 2 hours. But we stopped several times to watch various animals, feed fish and just sit and relax on one of the many benches situated around the lake.
Definitely recommended as a nice activity in Kandy that costs absolutely nothing!

The Kandy Lake is in the heart of the city. There is paid parking near by. The walking path along the beautiful lake is wonderful. The view of the lake on one side and The Buddha temple on the other have a real calming effect

A beautiful lake that is totally man made we were told. Vendors on the lakeside are selling items that are given as offerings in the nearby temple of the sacred tooth. If you drive up the hill, you get a very good view of not only the lake but of the city as well.

From the the descriptions on here,we were expecting a tranquil stroll around a beautiful lake,I’m afraid I was disappointed ,at least half the walk is along a main thoroughfare for traffic in Kandy, with horns sounding and choking fumes and engine noise meters from the pavement, the lake is fairly unremarkable to look at.
There are Ducks and lots of massive carp and we saw an enormous bloated monitor lizard so there is undoubtedly wild life.
I love the outdoors but not an experience I would want to repeat, certainly wouldn’t travel far to see it.

We visited this lovely artificial lake before we went to the see the Temple of the Tooth. It was built in 1807 by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe and is located next to the Temple of the Tooth. It has a nice island in the middle that has a garden on it.

It is lovely to walk around the lake in the evening and there are lots of marble benches that you can use to appreciate the view.
