On our visit plan near Kandy , we decided to visit this temple me and my two Sri Lankan friends . They got stopped asked to pay entrance fee since I was foreigner , nothing unique in Sri Lanka but really unusual for a place dedicated to spirituality.
I cannot imagine having foreigner asked to pay to enter a church back home in France .
The worse think was the aggressive attitude of one of the monk which was verbally insulting my friends , both of my friends are Buddhist and were really disgusted by the whole situation.
Small message for the monk business oriented be more kind and both local and foreigner will be more than happy to donate money for your temple , like it’s done everywhere else.

Though this temple is known as "Gadaladeniya" today, An inscription identifies this temple as "Dharma Kirthi Viharaya" which is the name of the founding monk. The work "Nikaya Sangrahaya" identifies this temple as "Saddharmathilake" and "Saddharmalankaraya" identifies this as "Gadaladeniya Viharaya" after the village which it is located.

We went on a tour of the three main temples outside of Kandy. This temple is located less the 2km from the Colombo-Kandy road. It is built on a rocky outcrop, with numerous small rock pools. You will need to pay an entrance fee Rs300 per person and the ticket seller also does hand painted postcards of the temple, which he will try and sell.
The complex consists of a white stupa, with four small shrines on each of the cardinal points. The temple itself was covered in scaffolding, to protect it from the rain, which apparently has been in place for a number of years. Inside is a large seated Buddha.
It's a pleasant place to visit but I wouldn't make a specific trip just to see this temple complex.

I did'n have it in my list but passed on the way to airport. It is on top of the large rock. Very nice and quiet place. A painter was painting in paper. Some grandmas were chanting. The temple architects in stone. Very historical.

This is a place to visit if you are passing by to Kandy which is located at Pilimathalawa closer to Kandy. A temple built by King Wickremabahu which needs a lot of attention and maintenance in the present.

Must of course take shoes off to enter and on a hot day like when we visited, be aware the ground is so very hot on the bare feet.

Another smaller temple for the Hindu. Just pass by and view the white and black architecture - not a huge one.

The nice, little Buddhist temple is considered one of the largest rock temples of the country and dates back to the 14th century, being built in 1344, during the reign of King Bhuvanekabahu IV. It is one of the three "temples of the loop", there's hardy any tourist there and very much worth a short visit...

It's 1km from the a1 road from colombo to Kandy. Turn from the pilimatalawa junction.
One of the three famous temples on this road. Nothing much to see. Not a must visit, but if you have time to kill why not?
