About
All the visitors to our exclusive geological and gemological museum are invariably given an A to Z knowledge on how Sri Lanka was originated 4.6 billion years ago engulfing the wonderful minerals and gemstones outshining the ones in other parts of the world. The knowledge thus includes the genesis and deposits of gemstones after getting them washed off to the places where the bottoms of gem pits lead to. Furthermore, in our museum you will see the rarest minerals in the world which are located and found in Sri Lanka and also the oldest fossils of living beings which were originated in the Cambrian (541-485 million years) Era.

Enjoyed the info but felt like we should have purchased something. Very expensive to buy even the smallest of items. Nice to buy for special occasions.

The Gem Museum in Kandy exhibits rare minerals which are found in Sri Lanka. The museum also gives its visitors detailed knowledge on how Sri Lankan minerals are mined and why their gems outshine the ones found around the world.

Brought here by our auto guide who suggested the museum tour offered here. Very interesting tour of gems: how they are formed, different types and how they are mined. The guide was very friendly and helpful. At the end of the tour we were shown around their shop - lots of lovely jewellery.
They made a custom designed set of earrings for me within a day- which were beautifully done. FYI gems can be authenticated in the world trade centre in Colombo (gem and jewellery exchange on the 4th floor- there is a nominal fee for a certificate - make sure it is the government service). We would suggest doing this before committing if possible. Fortunately the gems we bought from this shop were real.

We had the most spellbinding tour of the museum. The staff are very knowledgeable and informative but explain it all so enthusiastically ! A great tour with very good hospitality and a beautiful display of jewellery to top it all off. What's not to like ?
Very highly recommended.

A visit to this museum/gem store starts with a tour at the first level of this store. Our guide was a friendly and knowledge gentleman that explained the history of the earth, formation of various rocks/gems, gem mining in Sri Lanka plus a large variety of rocks and gems on display. Downstairs is a jewellery store where we were taken to afterwards and shown various pieces of jewellery.
