About
The Kandyan Dance is traditionally performed to percussion only. The most common drum is the Geta Beraya, which is only used in Kandyan Dance. To assist the dancer to keep rhythm a small pair of cymbals known as the Thalampota is also used.

We were given seats on the front row which gave us a perfect view but at the same time we were so close to the stage that it was very noisy because the drummers were active throughout the show. The speaker who introduced the show was impossible to understand but we had small leaflet telling about the dances. The show was a bit boring because it lasted for almost an hour and was much of the same stuff.....

The performance takes place in a poorly ventilated hall. I could see many a/c units in the ceiling but most of their lights were off. Tickets didn't assign numbered seats and the chairs were all same level so only the front seats got the good view. Travel agents were allowed to reserve front seats for their groups which wasn't fair for those who came early to get good seats but still had to sit at the back. Dancers were not in sync with each other .... it was like they never rehearsed. Make drummers were clearly better but overall the show was poor. It didn't cost much ... if that's any consolation.

Saw this dance show in the evening on 21 Jan,2019. The performance was quite amateurish - some dancers were quite obviously out of sync with others. Found plenty of British & Chinese tourists here. The coal walk and fire show post this dance was of some excitement. Post the dance show, 2 dance girls are posted on either side of the exit to collect tips from viewers. This is obviously in addition to the ticket price. The dance stage and hall could definitely use some upkeep.

The place where the show is held is terrible..lack of air, moldy and smelly … i couldn’t stay at the show due to this place!! The dancers gave it everything they could..i bit out of synch..but they were doing their best…i do not recommend! Also, the toilet: horrible..dirty and there was a person asking for money…like what???

This is a copy of my review at https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g304138-d2252272-Reviews-Kandyan_Dance_Performance-Kandy_Kandy_District_Central_Province.html, where most of the reviews for this show appear.

We made a mistake of not checking previous reviews of this show on TA. The quality of the show was mediocre (to be a little generous), despite – or perhaps because of – some athletics and circus acts that it included. The organisation was bad – when we arrived 30 minutes before the show almost all seats were reserved, with just a few back rows available. We almost fell asleep (also because of lack of air). Waste of time and money.

We attended this at 1000 LKR per person. The stage was and hall was not that well upkept and toilets not appealing. The dance itself was entertaining and kids enjoyed the fire shows and coal walk best. There was a cat under my seat that gave me a fright ! All in all, it was good to kill time while waiting for the 6.40pm tooth casket opening at the Tooth Temple

Performance was quite amateurish. Despite of performing each afternoon, some dancers were obvious out of sync with others. Its okay for the price you pay (1000 rupees) and honestly it doesn’t really worth much more than that. Its close to tooth relics temple so if you are just there to kill time, this is a good option.

Located right next to the sacred temple of tooth relic , this historic performing arts theatre is more than a century old.
The entry tickets can be purchased at the venue itself for SLR 1000 per person.
Refreshments are also available at the venue.
Perhaps due to ongoing economic turmoil, the foreign tourists attending the program were few.
The artists are quite young , energetic and well trained.
The program is well choreographed, the drum performance is unique to Sri Lanka and the program was short and crisp.
The acrobatics show by the artists was impressive and the fire walking was amazing.
The program is timed in such a way that we have about half an hour to walk to the temple of tooth located next to the venue to worship the tooth relic during the evening Puja.
This is a cultural program one needs to attend while in Kandy, Sri Lanka.

Recommended.

Great 5pm show, with fire walking also taking place in the auditorium as a post-script. Reserve a seat by all means, but you’ll very likely still get a good view if you buy a ticket on the door 1/2 an hour before the start. Absolutely no need to use the services of a tout or guide. If you have more than one night in town, I also recommend the YMBA show. This is more intimate, almost as lively and includes fire walking on the terrace (good for shots of the Buddha on the hill beyond

We were ushered in to our seats by a local - be prepared to give a small trip to these people as a small amount means a lot. The seating is very basic and I would imagine if you are in the back the view may not be as good. The venue needs a lot of upkeep but it's part of the art association and I found the performance quite good. A lot of asian tourist. I noted quite a few thinking the show had ended, left the building before the fire walking at the end.

It may not have been the best in Kandy, but overall I found the performance very good - it was very hot in the building but at least the ceilings were high so not too stifling. Yes if you went up on stage for photos, a tip is expected. This is a country that does not have high wages so II found that even a small amount was very much appreciated by them.

Don't use their toilets.
