- EPHtravelsAylesbury, United Kingdom1,124 contributionsVisit soon because it's a wreck and will disappear if not restored! Interesting place to visit to learn some history but sad to see it in the state it's currently in. So much black mould, falling off plaster, holes in the roof with pointless buckets under them. A main staircase you can't use as support is gone. The huge oil paintings of the owner will decay if they don't restore it, it's in poor condition. Maybe if more people visit and pay the 1000 rupiah entrance fee something could be done to save this building?Visited January 2025Traveled with friendsWritten January 18, 2025
- Виктория Я3 contributionsEpic place! Doesn't look bleak, but drama is enough, both in history and appearance), it's a pity, but most likely the jungle will swallow this mansion, thin roots here and there run through the walls, black mold eats the solar plaster😢. The tour is in English, but the guide tries to speak slowly and expressively, thanks 🙏🏻🤗, so even a superficial knowledge of the language allows you to understand the history of this place, and you can impress the interiors without words!Visited November 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten December 11, 2024
- Anastassiya BAlmaty, Kazakhstan252 contributionsAdmission of Rs. 1,000 per person, no tour, we were allowed to take photos and videos. The place is interesting, but quite abandoned in terms of restoration and support of appearance. Judging by the reviews, the price of a visit has multiplied since 2018, but what is being done with this money is unclear.Visited December 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten January 1, 2025
- Michael S19 contributionsA beautiful old house that unfortunately has suffered decades of neglect. The government now own this and are working to restore it but this is a very slow and expensive process. The photos of the house in all its glory show the house as it was. The house and gardens were magnificent and it is easy to imagine how beautiful it was.Visited September 2024Traveled with familyWritten September 11, 2024
- deFaellensLausanne, Switzerland13 contributionsWhat was certainly a sumptuous manor retains incredible charm! We imagine the parties, the balls, the parties in the park... The outbuildings are now used to accommodate around ten boys between 6 and 16 years old, whose parents no longer have the means to take care of them.Visited May 2024Traveled soloWritten May 27, 2024
- Emma Rebbitt126 contributionsWe got a tok tok that took us to Richmond Castle and a lovely lady showed us all around and told us the history and had a look round the gardens. There’s also a boys orphanage in the grounds of the castle and everybody that pays to go into the castle that money goes towards looking after the boys. so that’s a really good reason to go and see the Richmond castle to give something back to the children of Sri Lanka.Visited February 2025Traveled as a coupleWritten February 2, 2025
- АртемGomel, Belarus12 contributionsIt's a beautiful place! The castle is very similar to the manor house from the movies, if you know good English they will also tell the story of the place, about the owner. There were a lot of cool engineering solutions that were applied here at the time. Admission Rs. 1,000 per person.Visited December 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten December 9, 2024

I did not know about this castle until my Sri Lanka buddy Saman described it briefly. It was a lovely castle set on higher grounds amidst greenery and away from the main road. 😍
There’s a lovely history to it.
The museum guide, Dinisha, explained the history well and lively and showed the various parts of the museum.
May thanks, Saman and Dinisha, for showing me a part of Sri Lanka’s history. 😊

Great building with a lot of history, felt like a time travel. Also very nice garden around, we saw a lot of flowers and some lizards. The price is 500 rupees and we got a guide with decent English for it. Also there is a river view from garden. Last piece of cool things is amazing woodwork in the mansion - great stairs and pillars all masterfully carved. The tour takes around an hour and then you can stay in the garden for any time you like. Definite worth visiting.

Fascinating visit to Sri Lanka’s past. We did a half day tour taking in Temple visits, tea plantations and a local waterfall. Our tour was organised by Freddy Tours Kalutara +94 77 63 49248. Freddy is a lovely, polite and knowledgeable man who tailored our trips to suit our needs and budget. We would highly recommend him. Richmond Castle was the home of Don Arthur de Silva Wijesinghe and has interesting history which you need to discover for yourselves.

Richmond castle is a blast from the past. When you visit you will receive a short history lesson by a very knowledgeable guide. Don’t be distracted by the obvious need for restoration and conservation, the story and artifacts, as well as the building, garden and surroundings itself are worth a visit. It’s a short Tuk Tuk ride from Kalutara. We went with Pradeep from Freddy Tours +94 77 634 9248 (WhatsApp). He is a cheerful and friendly tour guide. He has good knowledge of the local area and speaks good English. Very accommodating and ensured we had a pleasant journey.

Bungalow belongs to one of the richest personals in Sri Lanka in 1950's, its said that this was made ,copying a structure owner has seen on his visit to India. story goes that , when he asked for the blue print from the indian owner , he was ignored ,however he has invited that person from india for the opening to show his wealth .castle has its own theater and a well structured ventilation system , bungalow is next to the kalu-ganga river which makes it a ideal location for tranquility for the owner ."Mudali" had his own army also . now its maintained by a fund . from the looks its not easy to maintain such massive bungalow

A very interesting visit with a great tour by a local lady , wjo was very knowledgeable and passionate. The building is being restored to its previous beauty.
There is an orphanage for boys attached to the castle, so your visit will help local people with education. We travelled by tuk tuk and our driver stayed with us whilst touring local places 3hrs 2500rs..

This wax built in 1900-1910. This was belongs to Mudaliyar Don Arthur de Silva. This was built similar to a castle in India. In this Palace air conditioning system, sound proof walls are amazing technologies. Since they didn’t have children this was converted to a children’s home.

Went there last year with a friend. And we got a lady guide. She explained well about the family history and the history of this castle. According to the guide the real name of the castle is 'Rich Man's castle' which later became 'Richmond Castle'. You can see the Kalutara temple from the top floor.
The architecture and interior used to build this castle is really interesting. But the place needs lot of maintenance. The visit will take less than half an hour, but it's worth it. Don't forget the camera.
Recommended for people who are interested in architecture, interior and carvings,

The word 'castle' is really a misnomer - it is a mansion and famous for its architectural features and build during the period from 1889 to 1947. It is an estate of 42 acres and built by a wealthy landowner turned philanthropist, Padikara Don Arthur de Silva Wijesinghe Siriwardena. Queen Mary from England attended his wedding. The building once served as the home of high ranking officials of the British Administrative Service.
It was the last will of the owner that the mansion be used as a Orphanage for boys which today uses part of the place. It is also used for community activities of the area. Tourists are welcome to see round the mansion, which contains several very interesting photographs.

Despite some twenty visits to Sri Lanka, many to this area, we had not heard of Richmond Castle. Eranda, the tuk-tuk driver we have used for many years (and who has since become a good friend) recommended a visit here. We have learned to rely on his judgement and set off the next morning from our hotel in Ahungalla for the short trip to Kalutara.
We loved the place. The lady conducting the guided tour had a good sense of humour and was very knowledgeable. It is true that parts of the building are a bit run down, but that does not really detract from the experience. There are very few places like this left in Sri Lanka and if you are staying in the general area I would recommend a visit here.
(Incidentally, if you are looking for a reliable tuk-tuk driver, you can contact Eranda on Whatsapp +94 77 664 1538. He is based at Ahungalla - ideal if you are staying at the Heritance there.)
