- DariaKyiv, Ukraine7 contributionsGreat architecture, garden and historyGreat building with a lot of history, felt like a time travel. Also very nice garden around, we saw a lot of flowers and some lizards. The price is 500 rupees and we got a guide with decent English for it. Also there is a river view from garden. Last piece of cool things is amazing woodwork in the mansion - great stairs and pillars all masterfully carved. The tour takes around an hour and then you can stay in the garden for any time you like. Definite worth visiting.Visited January 2022Traveled with friendsWritten January 28, 2022
- KimPapatoetoe, New Zealand235 contributionsLovely castle 😊I did not know about this castle until my Sri Lanka buddy Saman described it briefly. It was a lovely castle set on higher grounds amidst greenery and away from the main road. 😍 There’s a lovely history to it. The museum guide, Dinisha, explained the history well and lively and showed the various parts of the museum. May thanks, Saman and Dinisha, for showing me a part of Sri Lanka’s history. 😊Visited November 2022Traveled as a coupleWritten December 15, 2022
- MarkJamesEdgarBournemouth, United Kingdom81 contributionsWonderful discovery not far from Kalutara.Fascinating visit to Sri Lanka’s past. We did a half day tour taking in Temple visits, tea plantations and a local waterfall. Our tour was organised by Freddy Tours Kalutara +94 77 63 49248. Freddy is a lovely, polite and knowledgeable man who tailored our trips to suit our needs and budget. We would highly recommend him. Richmond Castle was the home of Don Arthur de Silva Wijesinghe and has interesting history which you need to discover for yourselves.Visited January 2022Traveled as a coupleWritten January 31, 2022
- JamsilSingapore, Singapore75 contributionsWorth a trip when you are in the vicinityRichmond castle is a blast from the past. When you visit you will receive a short history lesson by a very knowledgeable guide. Don’t be distracted by the obvious need for restoration and conservation, the story and artifacts, as well as the building, garden and surroundings itself are worth a visit. It’s a short Tuk Tuk ride from Kalutara. We went with Pradeep from Freddy Tours +94 77 634 9248 (WhatsApp). He is a cheerful and friendly tour guide. He has good knowledge of the local area and speaks good English. Very accommodating and ensured we had a pleasant journey.Visited April 2022Traveled as a coupleWritten April 2, 2022

In this Palace air conditioning system, sound proof walls are amazing technologies. The building is being restored to its previous beauty. There is an orphanage for boys attached to the castle, so your visit will help local people with education. - Ken SDiss, United Kingdom376 contributionsWorth a visit if staying in KalutaraThe word 'castle' is really a misnomer - it is a mansion and famous for its architectural features and build during the period from 1889 to 1947. It is an estate of 42 acres and built by a wealthy landowner turned philanthropist, Padikara Don Arthur de Silva Wijesinghe Siriwardena. Queen Mary from England attended his wedding. The building once served as the home of high ranking officials of the British Administrative Service. It was the last will of the owner that the mansion be used as a Orphanage for boys which today uses part of the place. It is also used for community activities of the area. Tourists are welcome to see round the mansion, which contains several very interesting photographs.Visited May 2013Traveled soloWritten June 4, 2013
- TravelCriticWales386 contributionsInteresting and enjoyableDespite some twenty visits to Sri Lanka, many to this area, we had not heard of Richmond Castle. Eranda, the tuk-tuk driver we have used for many years (and who has since become a good friend) recommended a visit here. We have learned to rely on his judgement and set off the next morning from our hotel in Ahungalla for the short trip to Kalutara. We loved the place. The lady conducting the guided tour had a good sense of humour and was very knowledgeable. It is true that parts of the building are a bit run down, but that does not really detract from the experience. There are very few places like this left in Sri Lanka and if you are staying in the general area I would recommend a visit here. (Incidentally, if you are looking for a reliable tuk-tuk driver, you can contact Eranda on Whatsapp +94 77 664 1538. He is based at Ahungalla - ideal if you are staying at the Heritance there.)Visited December 2017Traveled as a coupleWritten August 26, 2018

Amazing place to visit . Could not imagine how much money and effort would have gone in to building such a magnificent castle , long years ago .. very interesting story behind the castle though the end is very sad .

One of the few places around Kalutara to visit though the 500 LKR entrance vs 50 LKR for locals was a little off putting. Anyway we proceeded with 1 ticket and 2 of our party waited where the tour starts.
The guide speaks good english and explains the history as she conducts the tour.
The building could do with some level of renovation even if just painting the outside.
It can be difficult to get transport from the Castle so bear that in mind when planning your travel there.

We had an excellent guided tour by one of the wardens of the property. She made us feel as if we were living in a more gracious glamorous time in this beautiful old house. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.
Some interesting architectural details - he House was cooled by holes in the foundations which allowed cool air to circulate under the house and escape through small holes in the floors; little wedge-shaped openings in the roof allowed for cool air to circulate but kept rain out or birds from flying inside; the walls are 2-foot thick to provide natural insulation; a beautiful spiral staircase to a private viewing gallery overlooking the ballroom is not to be missed.
The only negative was the road leading up to the car park and House - it needed to be resurfaced as it was riddled with pot holes.
