A must visit in Dambulla

Located close to the Kandy-Habarana main road, the Rangiri Dambulu Raja Maha Viharaya (Golden Temple) is a historical place.

The Golden Temple was on our to do list and, although we were not impressed, we did not regret the visit. Notes: 1-Make sure you wear comfortable shoes as you will be required to climb stairs. 2-Expect to cross dogs and monkeys as you go up. 3-Local drivers who are not certified guys cannot be with you during the visit.

The giant Buddha at the bottom of the stairs is beautiful. Quite a few stairs to climb but there are monkeys to admire as you climb. The caves are amazing. 5 in total. The second one was my favorite with various Buddha's. Everything was so colorful from the statues to ceilings. Great views as well. If wearing sandals bring socks,... More

This was a must on my list and I'm glad I was able to see it. I was dropped off by my driver at the entrance and was warned about the many steps going up, but I didn't mind. If you have water, I would suggest bringing it with you. It was very hot and my only regret was not... More

There are quite a lot of steps up but anyone should be able to manage it maybe at a slow pace in the heat. There are lots of monkeys to see along the way climbing the trees and running around but they're not dangerous. The temple is definitely worth the trip I don't think you'd need a tour booked, just... Very impressive temple, many different structures within its compound, the name comes from a very large dome covered in gold leaf. The most interesting section for me was located high up the hill, accessible via a wide stone staircase that is always full of movement. I have visited it twice in the last 5 years and found it always busy... More

These caves are located a short distance from the town. They are accessed by walking a rather long set of steps. The 5 caves are great to look at especially some of the murals. It is best to start at cave 5 at the end of the walkway and walk back to finish at cave 1 as this way you... More

One of the only places where tourists are not charged admission. Nice walk up to the temple. Five different adjoining caves with Buddhas in each.
