This is a large, busy, wholesale fruit and vegetable market just off the main road.

We loved visiting- not to purchase (it is wholesale ie >5kg lots, not retail), but to look, and photograph.

It is a work environment so take care and take care not to get in people’s way.

In Dambulla, it is 1 km from the Golden Temple, you will see the largest vegetables and fruits wholesale market in Sri Lanka. Every day, numerous colorful vegetables and fruits are offered on the market. The harvest from the surrounding fields and villages is brought in to the market for distribution to the rest of the country. There are 2 large halls where the fresh exotic fruits and vegetables are supplied. Trucks loaded with pumpkins, varieties of bananas, mangoes, avocados, watermelons, apples, coconuts, beans, carrots, leeks, peppers and lots more are supplied. You are short of eyes to see all this. This is a must to see.

The highlight of our visit to Dambulla was this wholesale market. Really bustling, loads of colour. Bought milk tea and coke from a kiosk. Locals busy but not unfriendly, selling and schepping and loading. Mind you dont get run over.

The vegetables and fruits wholesale market: if you wonder what they grow and sell in Sri Lanka, stroll this market. You'll find all types of fruits and vegetables here. Cleaned and packed for transport. Also: watch all traffic in and around the market as everybody will come to this market at least once a week.

Stopped there to get some fresh fruits and really loved all the smells. There are so many different options of food to choose from, as so many vendors bring their goods to showcase there. Well worth the stop, even just for a few pictures!

The hustle and bustle of commerce conducted amongst colourful fruits and vegetables. We only stopped here by chance and were blown away by it. Do visit and soak in the atmosphere- just be conscious of not getting in the way of the folk who are working.

It was so unique to walk around the market and see all the local fruits and vegetables. The fish selection was abundant. There were also street vendors selling the most delicious fried doughnuts filled with a spicy spread!
