Considered to be an icon of architectural glory in ancient Sri Lanka. Built in 140 B.C by the king Dutugamunu, Ruwanwelisaya is known to be the oldest stupa in the country which is at the top of the most significant sacred places. A must visit place.

A beautiful, holy place. On your way to the main stupa attraction you will probably also see the langurs. Consider to put on socket, you have to cross a very hot stone path without shoes.

Massive structure and very impressive indeed. Check out the old Buddhist monk who stands still near the stupa. He doesn't accept money, but is OK with photographs being taken of him!

This place is magical, you can sense the power of spirituality as you walk counterclockwise(!) around this massive dome. There are many locals around all dressed in white. If you can it's best to also wear white as a sign of respect. Go here early...More
