Roughly 1,700 years old, it was a place for monks to bathe and engage in ablutions. It is made of granite and has an underground canal system. Its monumental scale reflected its need to service some 5,000 monks at a time. That it is larger than six Olympic size swimming pools is an architectural achievement itself for the time.

Ath Pokuna or Eth Pond, near Lankarama stupa is the largest pond found in Anuradhapura. This is considered to be the bathing pond for the Abayagiri Monastery monks which numbered several thousands in earlier times.

A pond that is more than three times longer (159 m), more than twice broader (52.7 m) and almost 5 times deeper (9.5 m) and holding 30 times more volume of water than an Olympic swimming pool (75000 Cubic meters) created during 2 century B.C to 1 century A.D period and still has a functioning underground water supply system connected to a tank in the neighbourhood, is very much difficult to apprehend unless one see it! “Eth pokuna” had a fair volume of water during my visit and it was a lovely sight.

This pond is considered the largest man made pond in ancient Anuradhapura. This was used by the thousands of monks in the sacred city.
Visit this place as it can be soothing in the hot sun.

Worth a visit just to see the scale of this pool. The proportions are lovely too. We were here when the pool was full although it may be even more spectacular when the water level drops to reveal columns on the bottom. It's 30 metres deep.

Magnificient ancient and takes your breath away by its majesty and exceptional architecture. The road is tough and not many people visit this. Hidden away in the ancient ruin close to a Dhaana Shalawq of Buddhist monks.

Scenery is so attractive with bright sun in rainy season. Everything looks green and cool. It's unbelievable how the pond has been constructed on a rock itself while keeping its natural state.

This is yet another fine example of ancient Sinhalese culture and engineering which is quite staggering and can be found everywhere in the cultural triangle and beyond. An amazing country to explore.

Amazing man made pool with 159 meters in length 52.7 meters across and 9.5 meters in-depth.
It is just behind the Lankarama Viharaya and surrounded by forrest. It is a stunning view and shows the water technology used by ancient Sinhalese kingdom.
