Lankarama is a stupa built by King Walagamba, in the ancient kingdom of Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. The ruins show that there are rows of stone pillars and it is no doubt that there has been a house built encircling the stupa (vatadage) to cover it. The round courtyard of the stupa seems to be 10 feet (3 m) above the ground. The diameter of the stupa is around 45 feet (14 m). The courtyard is circular in shape and the diameter is around 1332 feet (406 m). Sthupa is another site of Atamasthana. This sthupa is one of the small in size sthupas when comparison to other sthupas of Atsmasthana.

Shoes off! Hats off! If you are lucky, you will see hundreds of flags flying, multitudinous pilgrims mounting the steps in total devotion.
Listen to the chanting and prayers! Hard to explain in such large crowds you can still feel peaceful and sense holiness!

If you are covering all sites in Anuradhapura following a map, which i recommend, do visit this as well. It is smaller than many Stupas and Dagobas in the ancient site but very serene and a beauty. Wear socks because it gets very hot in summers!

Lankarama Sthupa is an another place of Atamasthana at archaeological city in Anuradhpura. It was build by Kind Valagamba. This sthupa is small in size when comparison to other sthupas in Atsmasthana.

Wonderful Stupa, and so calm and peaceful. We didn't use a guide, just grabbed a tuk tuk and strolled around at our own pace. As with all religious monuments in Sri Lanka you have to remove your shoes, so take thick socks.

This archaeological park is jam packed with stupas and this is another one. Nothing to set it apart from any of the others.

This is another beautiful Buddhist temple here in the old city area of ruins. You need about half an hour here. Dress Code applies.

This stupa also built by King Walagamba. This is rather smaller than other available in the area. However, archeologist believe that there was a shelter for this stupa. There are ruins of that too.

A much smaller temple than some of the grander ones around it in Anuradhapura but a very pleasant and less crowded one and well worth a quick stop.
It is a striking white temple and you'll need to take off your shoes, though socks are allowed and quite advisable to protect your feet from being burned on the ground beneath you on hot days!.
There is one display board in English explaining the temples origin and some very striking altars as you walk around.
We enjoyed our visit as the people there were devout locals at prayer rather than hordes of tourists. We kept our distance and observed and explored with respect and deference.
