There is little so see today of the Brazen Palace. Made of wood, it burnt down several times over the centuries. It may have been a monastic, rather than royal, residence. There are more than a few doubts about the reputed 9 stories, yet alone 1,000 rooms. Some of the pillars presently standing are not original. With some background, a traveler can imagine past grandeur while a tourist will just pass by muttering.

The fenced off 1600 pillars are all that remains of what was once a palace of great heights. It's impressive to look at them and think that they are more than 2000 years old.

Once again one is amazed by the technology of many centuries ago, this building has had 9 stories & made for the priests to perform their religious obligations.
This building was called "Brazen Palace" as the roof was coverd with "Copper - Bronze" tiles.By that arose the appellation "Lohapasada"(Brazen Palace) Unfortunately its in ruins now.

The seven-story Bronze Palace in Anuradhapura, also known as the Lowamahapaya, is an awe-inspiring architectural wonder that radiates grandeur and luxury. Currently, visitors can only view the foundation and the ground floor granite pillars, which are symmetrically aligned. The sheer size of these remnants reveals the intricate design of this historic structure, showcasing the advanced engineering skills of ancient Sri Lankan craftsmen.

Standing before this magnificent palace, one cannot help but feel a rush of excitement and wonder at the rich history and cultural significance it embodies. Each level of the palace would have been adorned with elaborate carvings and sculptures, providing a unique glimpse into the past and leaving visitors in awe of the ingenuity and creativity of those who constructed it centuries ago.

As you explore the area, you may be delighted to encounter many monkeys and rare black-necked herons, adding to the enchanting atmosphere of this remarkable site.

Another of the many masterpieces of architecture, construction and especially stone masonry in the area. It is a pit this part is not substantially viewable other than through a wire fence. Very near the Bo tree, so you'll probably be doing both at the same time. Take your socks, to protect our soft feet, this is acceptable and respectful in the shrine areas.

Need to sign post the sites better. We kept going around several times trying to find this place. In Anuradhapura the sites should be marked systematically and the paths improved to walk on a rainy day and better toilets from the money they have got from foreigners.

We're sure that the 'Brazen Palace' will have been quite a spectacle in its day - but the reality now - is 1,600 unornate fenced off columns. Worth a quick photo if you're passing it on the way to the sacred bodhi tree but not worth going out of your way (in our opinion).

Sri Lanka has many beautiful ruins. The brazen palace is 90% imagination and 10% granite columns (there are many of these though). When I say 'granite columns', I do not mean the elaborate carved variety. It looks more like a construction site than an ancient ruin.

This too is located in Anuradhapura close to Sri Maha Bodhi and Ruwanwelisaya. This was used as a place to get the Buddhist Monks assembled on “Poya” days to recite the “Pirith”. According to history this was a nine story building done by King “Dutugemunu” who built the “Ruwanwelisya”.
