About
This monastery is in a quiet area about ten minutes from the ancient sites of Anuradhapura. The monks there are very knowledgeable about all of the places you would want to visit in this UNESCO World Heritage city. They will be able to speak with you in English about the sacred sites, Buddhism and meditation. NOTE: This is a modern, fully functioning monastery full of monks who are happy to talk with you about the ancient sites of Anuradhapura as well as answer questions about Buddhism and Meditation. It is not an ancient historical site.

We are so happy that you found the monks to be helpful. Teaching to visitors is the very special thing they have to offer in this beautiful ancient city. Especially because most of the ancient sites in Anuradhapura don't have any resident monks at all, let alone monks who can speak English. Our monastery is there to serve both the local residents as well as the thousands of pilgrims who visit the city each year, both foreign and domestic.

Asks for money from visitors. Nothing of ancient value and newly constructed statues and buildings only.

We're glad you stopped in to visit the monastery and we are glad that they were able to help guide you to the ancient sites around them. Buddhism is a living tradition in Sri Lanka and this monastery is part of that living tradition. Most of the ancient sites in Anuradhapura do not have active monasteries functioning at the site. Therefore if someone wants to speak with monks in English and learn about the area, this monastery is a great way to do that. Also, the monks are able to answer questions about Buddhism and meditation, something not available at most of the ancient sites. We are sorry if our listing led you to believe it was an ancient monastery.

Mahamevnawa Dhammachethiya Buddhist Monastery Anuradhapura is in a quiet area just minutes from some of the most ancient sites in the city. The monks can even tell you all about the area's sacred sites and Buddhism in this World Heritage city.

Th Monastery itself, is serene and Peaceful. In 2016, during our visit to Sri Lanka, we wanted to distribute school supplies to children in Anuradhapura. The monks helped us find a school and guided us throughout the event.

I visited the monastery with my wife in 2016. We needed some guidance to venerate the Great Stupa - The Ruwanweli Maha Seya. The monks at the monastery helped us to make our visit successful.
