We were delighted to visit this beekeeping museum. The atmosphere at this property is remarkable, warmly inspired by illustrations throughout history with tasting of wine and honey. The enthusiasm and effort of Professor Jovan Zivanovic is a worthy admiration. An extremely interesting resume, a successful man. While he was young, he suffered from tuberculosis, and his physicians advised him to return to Sremske Karlovce, licked with honey and beekeeping. On the slopes of Fruška gora, on the Matej, built a house and established apiary. Soon he was healed, and he began to deal with beekeeping practically and scientifically. At the same time, in 1865, he was appointed a professor of Serbian language at the Karlovac High School and then the Faculty of Theology. Jovan Živanović in the field of beekeeping over time achieves remarkable achievements, both as a practitioner and as a writer. He himself constructed apiary 1,907 years, which counted 400 hives. In the small museum you can see the items he used during his life as well as the book he wrote. His enthusiasm for bees has been passed on to his offspring, and her family's son Zarko (1875-1933) and his grandson Borivoje (1914-1997) continue to family tradition. During honey tasting we were delighted with its quality, especially honey with sesame. Apart from honey, the family Živanović successfully produces wine. So we also tried Probus wine, whose history is also interesting. And best of all, it was Bermet wine. For this wine, Prince Charles and Princess Camilla came to visit and tested it. It is truly a special wine, and it is worth visiting the family winery Živanović.

The museum contains lots of artifacts related to the history of beekeeping, as well to the history of the Živanović family. For a small fee, we enjoyed honey and wine tasting, guided by a lovely host.

We were brought here as part of a tour of Bulgaria,Serbia and Romania. Our guide was very good and the museum of honey and wine very interesting. After the museum visit we were seated on the terrace for wine and honey tasting. Nibbles of bread and cheese were provided to help enjoyment of six different wines and three distinctly different honeys. The setting is tranquil and delightful. We were shown the wine cellars...impressive, and, although fairly expensive, bought two jars of meadow honey from the shop. A really enjoyable relaxing visit.

The bee museum is amazing, even though the bee hives that used to be on site are no longer kept there but are now about 40km away. A good historical account of bee-keeping with plenty of artefacts in support. Just as interesting is the "lagum" where the exceptionally wonderful speciality Bermet wine is produced. A cellar goes "down" into the ground, but a lagum goes "in" to a rock or hill. The Zivanovic family are friendly hosts, and the daughter speaks good English. Wine can be tasted, and this never fails to get a sale - the Bermet is delicious, and makes an impressive (and much appreciated) gift to give to Serbian friends, who will admire your good taste.

I came with my family of 3 to visit this place on 2.August 2017.
I had a conversation with the owner Mr. Zivanovic over the phone and he told me to come at 5pm to visit this place and to join the group with an English speaking tour guide.
We arrived at 4.45 but the tour guide refused to accept us as part of the group and suggested we come back another time.
Very unpleasant experience in 40 degree heat. Luckily, Sremski Karlovci has many wineries and we found Dulka winery and purchased great wine.

We were really excited to visit this unique museum in Sremski Karlovci, a wine center for Serbia. We had planned on trying honey and wine and then buying the stuff we liked. Well, we never got a chance to taste a single thing. You have to take a tour in order to do that, which comes to about 4 euros. With that much money, you could buy several bottles of wine from some of the other local wineries...No thanks! Seems like the proprietors don't take kindly to being told that it's normal to sample things like wine, honey, cheese, whatever, before you buy it. We still bought a jar or honey, just to be nice, but we enjoyed our time going around to the other wineries in the area much more. Too bad they don't get the attention that Zivanovic gets. If you're in the area, and want to try some wines from really nice, GENEROUS folks, give this place a miss and head to Petrovic or Probus wineries.

This is a family run business with a tradition and taste you won't find elsewhere. These people are the nicest people you'll ever met and their old house converted into museum is full of historic items and exhibitions about bees, honey and wine making. Everything is clean and you can walk everywhere around, go down to the cellar, sit on the terrace, walk around the yard and of course try some of the fine wines and spirits they make here. A honey brandy, red or white Bermet and Merlot and Chardonnay are a must to try and to buy, prices are low and quality is high.

The Zivanovic family have had a wine cellar here for 300 years. The recipe for Bermet wine is unique to Sremski Karlovci. It used to be drunk at the emperor's court in Vienna and was even served on the Titanic. This family had kept the original recipe.

Our guide, Gradamir, took us to the Museum of Beekeeping and Wine Cellar of the Zivanovic family. It was a fascinating experience. One of the brothers gave us a lovely tour of the bee museum and talked about the family's history in establishing "bee friendly" procedures from way back to his great grandfather's time. He also took us into the wine cellar and talked to us about the importance of dirt floors rather than cement and mold to establish just the right environment for the best tasting wines. We then participated in a honey and wine tasting that was a lovely experience. We have visited wineries in many, many countries (including our home state of California) and have not enjoyed an experience more than the one we had with the Zivanovic family in Sremski Karlovci. Just loved it! We also bought several bottles of their delicious wine. (Details: The museum is located near the Peace Chapel in Sremski Karlovci. The website is muzej_pcelarstva. Youtubes are all in Serbian, but our host was quite fluent in English.)

Hi there, is there a website with more information about the museum, tour timings, opening hours, price...Is there a need for the tour to be booked in advance?
Written February 24, 2020
Hi,
Our local guide booked this as part of a full day tour organised by our son. We enjoyed a very pleasant hour at the museum.
