Šar Mountains or Sharr Mountain National Park is a mountain extending from Kosovo to Macedonia. Many activities can be done in this park other than hiking, camping and picnicking. It’s a 1 hour drive from Pristina and good for 1 day tour. Some wildlife in this region like bear, wild cat, wolf and others. Prevalla is located in the south of Kosovo and considered as part of Sharr Mountains.

We wanted closer contact with the villagers than is generally possible by staying in hotels so we hired a guide. Definitely worth it! Not only did we eat home cooked meals in villagers houses and stay in their houses, but did great hiking and biking. The biking to Brod was fantastic. From Brod we hiked up to the divide ridge with Macedonia; when we got caught in a storm we took shelter with shepherds in their mountain hut. Cool experience.
With a guide you can converse with the locals and everyone is so friendly. We did not need a car rental during that period, and since the guide price includes lodging and meals (and bike rental), it really is not that expensive. Highly recommend Bekim of Sharri Ecotours, based in Prizren. Super nice guy. His wife Flacca showed us around Prizren which was also great.

Sharr Mountains is a mountain range that lies in the south-east part of Kosova. They cover a territory of 60 km long and lie at an average altitude of 16-20 km. The Sharr Mountain consists of three main zones:
The zone of Luboten and Brezovica,
The central zone of Prizren, and
The zone of Opoja and Gora.
The most attractive peaks of the Sharr-Mountains are: Luboten , Bistra Peak, Black Peak, Kobilica Peak, Peak of Von Korff, Zallina Peak, Tërepeznica Peak, Great Vraca and Small Vraca. The highest peak is Luboteni Peak, which reaches an altitude of 2553 meters, and is believed to mean “Beautiful view” (originating from the French words: “le bo ten”).
The great ski and hiking terrains, picturesque landscape, and several mountain lakes make this part of Kosova one of the most beautiful and attractive places for visitors.

Unbelievable amount of litter. I was really shocked that no effort is made to both clean up the mounds of rubbish, or ban/fine people who leave their litter behind.
The only nice thing I experienced was the bus ride up and down the mountain (Prizren - Prevalla). It was a lovely scenic drive that took approx 45 mins.
There is a small tourist kiosk in Prevalla, however this was closed (Monday), so I went to the lovely restaurant “Prevalla” and asked the staff there where the start of the trails were. He was so friendly and helpful

My wife and I have visited the Brezovica Ski Resort many times over the years.
With that we have noticed a trend that increasingly makes our trips to Brezovica less and less enjoyable...
We understand that everyone has the right to an outing at the resort and that access to the resort should not be limited to anyone in particular.
Having said that, over the past couple of years the two lane road leading to the resort has become increasingly crowded with cars that cannot possibly make it up the hill to the limited parking area, and the only way to reach the top (parking area) is to arrive there very early in the morning (as early as 0600). If you do go up that early, you had better plan on remaining until the sun goes down because you will more than likely be unable to get your car out of the lot or down the hill after being blocked in by inconsiderate and unruly drivers.
Two weeks ago, we had a friend try to give us a lift up the hill (to avoid the fiasco of parking). We made it about half way up and decided to walk the rest of the way up because it was utterly hopeless for our friend to continue to the top in his Land Rover Defender.
We began to walk up the hill, but both lanes were completely blocked and it became an exercise in futility trying to negotiate around the vehicles competing to get that last parking spot that surely must be waiting for them at the summit.
We decided to turn around and walk back down the mountain.
On the way we stopped to talk to an EMS person that was trying to get his ambulance up the hill to be on the scene in case anyone got hurt.
This poor guy's base told him to give it up and park at the bottom of the road instead.
Which brings me to our next observation...
Up at the resort you will see people who are clearly not dressed for the mountain committing absolutely stupid and dangerous acts. No joke - last weekend we took the ski lift to the top to go snow boarding and we saw a guy coming over a small rise near the top of the run who was running downward wearing ski boots. My first thought was "okay - he must have somehow stepped out of his ski bindings".
That wasn't the case at all. This genius had no skis and was running down the slope trying to slide on the bottom of his ski boots. In blue jeans.
When we got to the bottom of the run, the last part of the slope was utterly blocked by people sitting in the snow, many in blue jeans with sneakers or high heels.
That made it necessary to brake well in advance and walk down the last grade in order to get to the lift without mowing any families over.
With all that, my wife and I have decided that it's just not worth it to visit the resort during the peak winter season. Instead we will wait until early April when the calamity should cease. Until then, have at it people!

We visited the region for 2 days in May 2013. The Sharr Mountains divide Kosovo from Macedonia, partly preserved as a National Park on the Kosovar side. We had breathtaking views while driving on highway R-115 in the Lumbardhi valley, east from Prizren. The place offers tremendous potential for hiking, biking, camping, or simply, as in our case a casual and "quick" car trip for a meal in one of a number of restaurants that dot the side of the road, on the margin of the Lumbardhi river (Bistrica). The area is well known and visited by locals, but it has tremendous potential to develop for international visitation.

A must visit place in Kosova for those in love with nature.

We rented a car to see both sides of the park. First we travelled to Brod and had a nice stay at the Arxhena Hotel for a few days. Great views especially along the running river. Then we visited the other side of Sharr crossing the butifull historical city of Prizren and stayed in Hotel Sharr for a few more days. Nice weather and freindly locals. Great experience!

We drove from Skopje to Prizren in Kosovo and the road goes along the beautiful Sharr Mountains. The view is just STUNNING - there are relatively few tourists and the views and the nature are not spoiled by trash or construction. The road is a bit treacherous though so be sure to stop in order to admire the views. Nice little restaurants along the way, too!

Clearly still recovering from the conflict, all ski facilities are still out of order. On the upside, an unique opportunity to see rare birds and animals and enjoy an absolute quite environment
