Starodoganjska Mosque
Starodoganjska Mosque
3.5
About
It was built by Skender Chaush in late 15th century. In addition to the Mosque in the fortress above the confluence of Ribnica and Moraca which was named Mehmed Hanova, it was the only mosque in the town until 1582. Today, its courtyard houses the Mesihats of the Islamic Community of Montenegro and other Islamic institutions.

This is a small, simple, but charming little mosque in the Stara Varos, the Ottoman-era old town. It is near the upper level of the ruins of the small Ottoman fortifications in the park at the Stari Most. It does not warrant a great detour or much time, but is worth a look when one is near it.

Almost immediately after the Ottoman conquest of Podgorica in 1474 a mosque was built here. Though few if any remnants of this old structure remained, the name Starodogan survived. Today it is the seat of Montenegrin mufti and makes a rather modern impression. Rectangular hall with a roof of terracotta tiles and a medium sized minaret together make up for a traditional ensemble. The interior as well is modest and sober. People at the mosque and in its vicinity are friendly. I did not observe any hostility against Muslims or vice versa against Westerners.

This is one of the mosque in Podgorica which I consider as the closest one from the city. It is within walking distance from Hotel M. Nikic.

I was on a guided tour and we visited this mosque. A man stood outside and I asked if I could have a look and he allowed me to step inside. It was rather small with the typical mosque interior; a colorful wall-to-wall carpet, mihrab and minbar. This mosque was built by Skender Čaušin in the late 15th century, so it is from the ottoman time. It was renovated many times. Larger repairs were made in 1985.

Feels a bit strange, to run into this place in Orthodox Christian country. And the location is very odd, unless you are Muslim, do not recommend going here.
