Unlike "Our Lady of the Rocks", the Island of Saint George is a natural island.
It contains the Saint George Benedictine monastery (12th century) and an old graveyard.
It is told that it has been an inspiration for the painting "Isle of the Dead" by Arnold Böcklin.

As all should know you can not go ashore on this island. So one just has to enjoy the views and let your imagination loose with some of it's history. Sveti Djordje is rising from a natural reef. It houses a Benedictine monastery shaded by cypresses and a large cemetery, earning it the local nickname 'Island of the Dead'.

The island is also called “The island of the dead captains”, because according to another legend one French soldier, by shooting a cannon towards Perast hit the house of his beloved girl and killed her. That legend is said to be a motive for the master piece “The Island of the Dead” by the painter Beklin.

This island sits right next to Our Lady of the Rocks. You can not visit though as it is privately owned. You have a clear view while you are crossing on the boat though.

We took a private boat from Kotor to motor near the Island of Saint George. It is a must see if you are in the Kotor or Tivet area of Montenegro. Great photos and very peaceful!

St. George Island is one of two tiny islets gracing Kotor Bay at Perast. You can ride a tour boat out to Our Lady of the Rocks (the other islet), but St. George is off limits. So I had to know more about it.

The island houses a Benedictine Monastery, built in the 1100s AD. It's also home to a cemetery where many residents of Perast are buried - thus it's known locally as the city of the dead. The monks apparently planted all the cypress trees, which are considered symbols of death and damnation.

Legend has it that a priest was murdered on the island, and thus it's avoided for fear of anathema in the catholic religion.

St George was the patron saint of Kotor, and he's credited with saving the island during a disastrous 6th century earthquake, which swallowed a nearby island called Risan, along with a large chunk of the coast.

The lore is quite fascinating. It makes me want to rent a kayak and sneak out there at dusk to see for myself !

Even though Ostrvo Sveti Dorde (Island of St. George) and its Benedictine Monastery can't be visited, it is for me one of the most beautiful photos to be had in the Adriatic. It now graces my wife's computer as the wallpaper. If you go to Our Lady of the Rocks church you will have plenty of opportunity to get a good shot of this gorgeous sight.

Came by kayak which I highly recommend! Great views from the island, not much else to see but it's nice and empty compared to the lady of the rocks.

Hard to review this, you are not really allowed on the island but a tour to Our Lady of the Rocks will fill you in on its history. It is a working monastery and as I understood, visits are by invitation only,

This Island and Orthodox Monastery is closed to the general public - the best way to view it is by boat to Our Lady of the Rock Church.
