This place exceeds expectations at an unknown level. Of course we read the reviews and the criticisms. But they do not give justice to the actual situation. The hotel has a memorial for the victims of the time when it was a prisoner island. It creates jobs for the communities of these victims and even the children of the victims support the safeguarding of this historical monument.
The place is spectacular. The architect who renovated the fortress is a genius. The service of the staff was phenomenal, the fresh fish at the seaside restaurant was amazing and even the pancakes at breakfast were the best we had in a long time. We have rarely seen a more beautiful sunset.
The pictures on the website of the hotel do not give credit to how beautiful it is. You have to make a choice regarding the room you book. The rooms with the frescos are the highlight but a bit dark. The rooms with a terrace were our choice.

Wow, if you want top grade and I mean Michelin star food their pool deck hits it. Took 17 people and everyone was blown away. The setting and place is all James Bond villain but have to stay food incredible as was the service. It’s high end so always a bit nervous when such a bill arrives and I will say it quietly, not cheap, no surpise but actually about half what I expected

If you are heading out to the blue cave and you your boat size permits, stop in for a wander around Mamula- read up on the history of the POW prison. There are plan to redevelop this into a hotel and Casino which I hope does not get the go approved as it is in my opinion and important part of the Montenegro's history.

We were told it was being renovated for a consortium for a hotel / resort casino complex.
There is obvious work happening on the island but it is hard to imagine it is going to be a hotel ... there is absolutely nothing around!
Supposedly an 1853 fort guarding the entrance to Boka Bay & Kotor & established by Austro-Hungarian General, Lazarus von Mamula, as part of contingency plans to prevent the enemy access to Kotor Bay. A couple of smaller forts were also constructed on Cape Ostro & Cape Azra nearby.
During World War II, from 30 May 1942 onwards, the fascist forces of Benito Mussolini's Kingdom of Italy converted the Mamula fort into a concentration camp. It became known for torture and cruelty to prisoners most of whom came from the neighboring area.
Reviews from people who have landed there seem to date no later than 2017.
And those reviews painted a picture of neglect.
In early January 2016 the government of Montenegro, over the objections of those who were once imprisoned on the island, approved a plan to convert the site of this former concentration camp into a luxury beach resort by Switzerland-based Orascom Development Holding AG under a 49-year lease deal.

When we booked our boat trip we were told this fort was a prison built in the 1800's. The real history of this real gem of a place is far more desperate. Originally built in 1853 by an Austro Hungarian General.
From May 30th 1942 during WW2 the fort was used as a concentration camp by fascist Italy.
I would go back here and will seek more history about it too. It has been left to nature really. It has a beautiful setting. The views are astonishing with the blue sea encircling the island. It's only a shame there isn't more of an attempt to preserve the site. There are no information boards, no safety notices. It may be dangerous for kids so keep them close as there are no safety measures in place.
Well worth a visit but keep in mind the awful fact that people were tortured here when it was a concentration camp and respect the site accordingly.

Located on a small island, it's really not kept well. There's a strong smell of decay, pee and other stuffs as a lot of people use it as a toilet...Didn't enjoy this at all.

This is a remarkable place, yet it should be properly conserved and maintained. I had an issue with the safety side, since it is not very obvious which parts of the fort are safe to explore ( stairs, walls and such ).

attention to all! this place is closed for some sort of hotel construction now!
so you can just make a round near it, that's it
yeah, disappointing, just go straight ahead to the Blue grotto
though sailing around it is also quite interesting, actually.

You go there by boat (included in the Blue Cave - Mamula - Beach tour). There are no explanation on the monument so you don't really know what's happening here. It actually appears to be an ancient prison. The place is not very clean. The 20 minutes allowed by the boat to visit it are clearly enough.
