About
This ensemble of buildings is one of the monumental architectural works in Oradea and Transylvania, typical for the secession style. The architects Komor Marcell and Jakab Dezső won the contest for the construction of this complex. Two Jewish lawyers, Dr. Kurlander Ede and Dr. Emil Adorjan, decided to finance, using their own resources, the construction of a noteworthy building in Oradea. The work started in 1907, under the supervision of the civil engineer Sztarill Ferenc, and in December 1908 the building was completed. Consisting of two unequal and asymmetrical buildings, connected to a third one, placed in the middle and more isolated, the complex housed a theatre, ballrooms, a casino and offices. The Y-shaped gallery (passage) has three entrances. The Vittorio Emanuele Gallery in Milan inspired the glass-covered interior. The gallery or the Passage, as the local people know it, concentrates the most popular bars, coffee houses and pubs in the city, being the entertainment high spot of the city.

The whole square is very well renovated, and the Black Eagle is the "jewel in the crown". Too bad a lot of space inside the palace is not rented - the costs are probably too high. Otherwise, everything is wonderful. The decorative elements, in Art-Nouveau style, have been carefully reconditioned, and the three stained glass windows, with the eagle symbol, look impeccable. Recently, a public parking lot was inaugurated on the left side of the "Black Eagle". This area must be visited step by step.

The old “arcade” as it is called is a covered pedestrian stroll among a few buildings. Enter beneath the beautiful stained glass awning off of Piata Unirii by the tramvai/streetcar stop. As you go straight ahead you will see some black and white posters of renovations over many years. LOOK UP! The ceiling in that area is stunning and worth a visit for that alone.
Many shops and bars are vacant thanks to the pandemic, but stroll along and see what you find. One souvenir shop was excellent with beautiful handmade arts and crafts like painted wooden spoons. Exit onto the side street where restaurants abound.

The Black Eagle Palace is the most spectacular secession style architectural achievement in Oradea and Transylvania. The palace’s passageway is open to visitors. Situated across three streets, it is the main attraction point for tourists, but also locals. The palace is located in the union square in Oradea, km 0 of the city. There are other important tourist attractions in the same square . A must see !

It's a very nice building in the center of Oradea. The renovations are still going on, but you can still admire the beautiful facade and the amazing black hawk. Worth stopping by.

Secession architecture masterpiece, built between 1907 and 1908 according to the plans of famous Hungarian architects Marcell Komor and Dezső Jakab.
These two architects, who designed also the Stern Palace, located on the Republicii Street, represent for Oradea what Gaudi means for Barcelona.
Vulturul Negru palace has been recently renovated and looks fresh and beautiful. Unfortunately, except for two cafes and one pub located on the ground level, there's not much to see. One hundred years ago, this exquisite building hosted a casino, restaurants, offices, shops and even a hotel.
Hopefully, the building will be full of life again, just like one hundred years ago. As of today, I have no reason to rate it higher, sorry!

Iconic place in Oradea, the Black Hawk is a nice bar FULL of young people enjoying a drink while listening to the latest beat...Safe place, safe drinks, large assortment of diverse drinks. I have seen a significant nmber of girl having colourful soft drinks which seemed very refreshing. Smoking inside may become a problem during colder nights when the doors are not open.
