Pedestrian Classic Tour with Traditional Food tasting in Oradea

The tour it's a perfect mix of history, culture and architecture, especially for those who want to discover the city in an unique way, but not spending too much time on it or gaining too much and maybe ''boring'' information. It will provide you a good understanding of why Oradea is considered the Art-Nouveau capital of Romania and why it is known as ''the city of kings'', all these behind the legends that stays in the back of the city construction.

Tasting traditional food is another way of disovering local culture. ”Plăcintă” is is a Romanian, Moldovan and Ukrainian traditional pastry resembling a thin, small round or square-shaped cake, usually filled with apples or a soft cheese such as ”Urdă”. This Romanian spirit is now known even in Japan. It is ”palinca” or ”tuica”, a liquor that is always present on any Ardeal peasant’s table and not only.

Unfortunately, the City Hall Palace is still in the renovation phase, so you can't really realize how beautiful this building is. Access to the Tower is not allowed either. I will be back in another year and I am sure I will enjoy what I will see then.

A wonderful place to visit, I haven't actually visited the City hall yet, but I've walked around the surrounding area. The statue of King Ferdinand 1 is wonderful, the many fountains are beautiful. There are a number of very good restaurants and pubs there, also many historical buildings. There are many festivities here to celebrate Romania's steep history, with stalls selling traditional food, flags and clothes. The whole area is kept very clean. I love just sitting there and taking in the atmosphere. A wonderful place.

This famous building is the landmark of Oradea. It's located in the Main Square near the River Sebes Körös (Cris). It was built in 2 years (1903-4). Before 1901. the famous Bishop's Palace used to stand in that place. You can see this imposing building from the bridge, too. We walked here also at night and took lots of photos. Unfortunatelly we weren't brave and strong enough to climb the stairs to the tower. It's a pity, we should do it next time.

The Clock Tower of Oradea's historic City Hall allows visitors - for a modest fee - an incredible view of Old Town and surrounding hills. There are no elevators and geting to the last level may require some effort, however, if you can, this would be a most rewarding stairs-climbing trip one can take. The clock tower used to serve as a watch point for the city’s firefighters. However ironic, history says that in 1944, the tower along with its top floor and roof took fire. The City Hall Palace and its Clock Tower have been renovated and rebuilt, currently hosting quite a number of visitors every year. On the ground floor, the tower has a pretty gifts shop , were the entrance tickets are sold as well.

We didn't go inside City Hall but has some fun taking night time photos of the place. It's very quiet at night and if you like photography you can get some good shots of a very elegant building after dark!
