- Natalie J1 contributionGreat for any Christmas loverSecond time doing this (each time with a 6 year old). This time was the. Long Island car because we had a member of our party in a wheelchair. They were good about getting her on, but unfortunately we were not able board in the back with her, so by the time we got on, our large group was scattered all over. The kids def picked up on a lack of snow, but once the elves started coming through socializing the kids came around. Santa and the elves took the time to stop at each section of people which was nice. Recommend this! Very cool local experience.Visited December 2022Traveled with familyWritten December 12, 2022
- Tommy L1 contributionRailroad history at it's best.My grandson and I rode in the locomotive of the Calera and Shelby railroad It was an exceptional adventure. The scenery was beautiful and the crew was very friendly and helpful in explaining how a locomotive works. The ride was just over one hour and was perfect. You can choose whether to ride in an open car, a vintage coach, caboose, or the locomotive. You will pay extra to ride in the locomotive or caboose but it is well worth it. Most people never have a chance to ride in a locomotive. There are vintage railroad cars and locomotives scattered around to look at. A museum with all kinds of railroad equipment and memorabilia to browse and a fully stocked gift shop. Spacious parking is available. A day well spent for the whole family.Visited March 2023Traveled with familyWritten March 19, 2023
- Jim A57 contributionsRelaxing on the RailsA relaxing, scenic ride through the backwoods of central Alabama, plus a chance to eyeball a large variety of rail cars, including locomotives, cabooses, work cars and other rolling stock. Convenient to Birmingham, as well. A must for any railroad enthusiast, and anyone who appreciates scenic excursions. There's also a stop to pick up passengers at a nearby winery, although we rode the entire length from the depot.Visited June 2023Written June 9, 2023
- lakeyta k27 contributionsAwesome Experience! My husband, son and I had the pleasure of riding the locomotive to Pumpkin Junction . My 19 year old son who is also Autistic is a train fanatic and loved watching Conductor Mike operate the controls in the locamotive. The scenery was beautiful and Punkin Junction which included a wine tasting in Ozan was awesome. Staff were great. They had lots of games and activities, food vendors and the weather was awesome. This was actually our second time traveling with HODR. We always make great memories when we travel with them. We plan to go back for Christmas. Thank you Conductor Mike and HODR staff for such a great experience.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 15, 2023
- Freida C14 contributionsGreat rideWe took the train to Punkin' Junction. Boarding was well organized. The only complaint I have is that the conductor, when talking to the passengers, stood toward the middle of the car and spoke to the back of the car. We were near the front and we didn't hear anything he said. He did not come to the front of the car and speak, or turn around to face the front and repeat the information he had just given to the back of the car. I don't know if he was supposed to have a microphone and it wasn't working or if that is just the way he works.Visited October 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 16, 2023
- Brianna O1 contributionWe will be back!We had the best time on our ride. The staff were all so friendly and helpful. Our favorite staff member was Rhett. He was kind and friendly to everyone he came in contact with. He kept us all laughing and took the time to answer any questions guests had. Rhett is an asset to have at the Heart of Dixie Railroad. He takes his job seriously, but had fun while he did it. He was such a joy!Visited October 2023Traveled with friendsWritten November 12, 2023
- Vanessa MTroy, Alabama4 contributionsSorry…. Not worth it.We went as a family of 9 and the experience did not live up to the hype for the $30 per person tickets. After sitting on the train for over 30 minutes waiting for Santa to appear in our car, many of the kids, ours included, were restless. We didn’t feel that we got the full experience with Santa and Mrs. Claus as the train had already started up and we felt rushed with our kids.Visited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten December 3, 2023

We boarded the C&NW-B Sunday at 6:30pm and immediately became worried about the ride. The back door to the train was left wide open and a fan placed to blow the cold, diesel filled air into our cabin. I am not sure the reasoning behind this method, but it was a truly miserable ride for the patrons of that car. My children were coughing by the end of the ride and all 5 of my family members had a huge headache. We couldn’t even enjoy our Santa pictures. The elves that boarded our train even got in a fight right in front of our seat. It wasn’t physical, but the verbal words were extremely uncomfortable for me and my children. I won’t be purchasing tickets in summer 2023.

My wife and I really enjoyed it. Very Friendly Staff and very helpful. We purchased the upgraded ticket to board first. Only thing that I suggest is they use a different color ticket for the upgraded tickets. They make you throw the little Blue upgraded receipt in a bucket before you board and keep your other ticket when you board. They come around to see if you purchased an upgraded ticket with NO proof you did or did not. They slack in the area of ticketing and knowing who purchased what ticket. Sime solution, ever staple the "Blue Upgraded Ticket to the main ticket to stay with you for proof or have two sperate colors...one for Upgrade and one for General purchased Tickets. Problem SOLVED.

It was okay, but expected a little more for the price tag. The North Pole wasn’t very North Pole like. When we were riding the train to the North Pole, you couldn’t see outside to even know the train was moving. Santa and Ms Clause were great and spent time with us. As well as the guy that punched names on our ticket in the Eagle train.
Our 2 year old loved it but I don’t think we will be going again. After Santa passed through we really just sat there for 30-40 minutes in the train. Luckily had good friends with us and kept ourselves entertained.
Hot chocolate vendor and the chocolate treats vendor were great before the train ride. Just the train ride/lights were a bit of a let down. Two teenage elves got into a pretend argument. It was really awkward. They probably thought it was funny, but it really didn’t fit.

We went on a Saturday afternoon. First train ride for my 4 year old. Tickets were easy to get. We looked around at all the old trains. The big black engine has stairs u can climb and u can blow the horn. My 4 year old wanted to ride the mini train. It was $3.50 person to ride. The conductor was very funny. We decided to ride the open air train. Nice ride down to Shelby and back to Calera. All of the employees were very nice and polite.

Well, it couldn't be helped that the leaf color was almost gone, or that it rained. But -- our train couldn't get up the slight incline. We went back and forth, back and forth, several times, until an extra engine hooked up to the back and pulled us backward to the station.

Chocolate milk in a paper carton, plain chocolate chip cookie and very little decorations in the “party car”. You do not get off the train at the “North Pole”, you sit and wait for Santa to walk down the aisle. After that, the train reverses and you go back to the station. I was expecting a better experience.

This is the second and last time we will go. The train car (Long Island) was disgusting, my kids were even uncomfortable sitting in the seats. Nothing happened, my kids were bored and literally sat there drawing the entire time. When Santa came by and asked my 8 yr old what he wanted, which he said a bike, the Santa responded with, “well ask your parents”
I was just completely disappointed with the whole experience. We will never be back and will tell everyone to avoid the disappointment

The only train we rode was the Christmas excursion. I know they have one around Easter and Thomas The Tank
.
Which ticket should we purchase? Trying to find reviews or the difference between chosing open air 1 or 2 or the other options. Please help!
