From Huaraz, we went on a two day camping trip to Laguna Paron. We rented our camping equipment in town and booked a private ride to the mountain lake. It took us about 4 hours to get there by car. The last one and a half hour was quite bumpy as the road leads over uneven terrain. Up there, we found a nice camping spot in front of the lake. The views didn't disappoint. The turquoise blue lake with the beautiful peak in the backdrop is a photographer's dream. Unfortunately, it was a bit cloudy during sunset. Anyhow, if you are going there to take pictures, I recommend doing this around noon, that's when the beautiful color of the lake pops the most. Up there, you can hike along the lake or head up to a beautiful viewpoint. If you don't want to spend there two days, you can also book yourself a day trip with a local tour operator. They do it in groups with a minivan and it's not as expensive as the private ride to the lagoon. If you go there by yourself it costs you nothing more than the 5 Soles entrance fee.

We decided to walk to the lake by ourselves after a recommendation from one of the travel agents in Caraz. We got up for the 6am combi to find it was actually at 7am, so caught a taxi to Paron for not much more. Be warned - there is no where to buy food or water in Pueblo Paron! So take lots with you.
The walk itself to the Laguna took about 3 and a half hours, walking along the road and then following well signed off-route hiking routes. Definitely worth going early in the morning as when the sun finally breaks over the mountains, it gets really hot! We were very glad to be on the way down before that.
The laguna is stunning - made more worthwhile after the walk, I would definitely recommend walking instead of catching a taxi all the way to the top.
We walked down and missed the last bus (2pm) to Caraz but managed to flag down a lift quite easily.

If you are doing day treks in the Huaraz/Caraz area, Lago Paron should be at the top of your list. Once there, take the walk around the lake, rather than the trail up to the ridge that leaves from the entrance to the parking lot. If you are hiring a cab, plan on five hours total to allow some contemplative time at the lake. The path around the lake is largely sheltered from the wind and is a relatively easy walk. This would make a great acclimatization hike if you're trying to adapt to the altitude before a longer trek. Simply stunning views and your photos will be killer if you get there before the sun drops behind the mountains.

There are two options to get to the Laguna Paron - you can either take a collectivo until the village Paron and then hike up 13 k to the Laguna or you take a taxi there (we payed 120 Soles from Caraz with the driver waiting 5 hours for us). You also have to pay an entrance fee of 5 soles there (Dez 2015).
The driver drops you off at the beginning of the Laguna. Then you have an easy hike for roughly 2 hours until the end of the Laguna (there it's a little more tricky to get by but still easy). Go until the very end of the Laguna because if not you are not going to see the Nvd. Artesonrajua (from the paramount pictures) and there is a second little Laguna. Enjoy, the place is beautiful!

Gorgeous lake surrounded by mountains. We took a “collectivo” bus at around 6:30 AM from the center of Caraz (you need to ask the locals exactly where to find a collectivo - it’s near the marcado). You get dropped off in Pueblo Parón (takes about 45 minutes) and then need to walk up the road for about 15 minutes until you arrive at the entry gate where someone will collect 10 soles from you. Bring your passport or know your number. The hike up to the lake takes about 2.5 to 3 hours and the “trekking” signs are easy to find. Don’t follow the road because it is way longer. Once we arrived at the lake, we did the extra climb up to the Mirador for a beautiful view. Be sure to save some time to walk along the lake (along the left side). Then you follow the same route back to the entry. We arranged to have a driver meet us at 4:00 and he charged 100 soles. Well worth it as I am not certain how late the collectivos run from Pueblo Parón.

The place it's great, like stopped in XIX century. It's hard to find a bad to sleep, but we did it. One of the family offered us their sons bad. Be patient, if you got there. One of the villagers offered us hard earthen floor for S50 , almost $20!!!!
Other then that, I recommend to go there. There is not much more places like that anymore.

In spite of having gone on an overcast morning with showers, the place is enchanting. It's well up there in altitude, and on a clear day must be fantastic. It was a pleasure having this vast panorama all to myself. I return to the area in June and will certainly return to Lake Parón!

Do not miss this place, it is wonderful !
We stayed 5 days/4 nights in Caraz of which we spent two days and a half at Laguna Paron.
Please do chose Caraz over Huaraz as your base accomodation for exploring Cordillera Blanca, it's prettier, quieter and much closer to most lakes and treks. Plus easier to acclimatize and better weather as it's at 2300m.
The two of us met two other tourists and booked a taxi for 120sol (30/person) to take us to the lake and back and wait for us for three hours while up there.
We hiked up the Mirador for stunning views, took the boat ride for 10sol/person and ate some papas con huevos y salsa picante y mate dee muña (potato, eggs and spicy salsa with andine mint tea) for 5sol.
And then we found out that we can rent rooms in the refugio, so came back the next day determined to sleep the night and hike some more.
The beds are comfortable, 20sol/person, with shared bathroom, but it's very cold (althogh enough blankets) and nearly no electricity so bring thermal clothing and lantern.
Second time we booked a taxi for 30sol to take us to the entrance in the natural reservation (where you nees yo pay the 5sol entrance fee) and hiked 4-5h up to the lake. There's 15km going from 3300m to 4200m. Beautiful hike!
At the lake, we hiked all the left side until the other end (it took us 2 hours as we are slow) were we found a lovely sand beach so we sun bathed there while taking in the stunning views !!
When the sun is out of the clouds it's quite strong, when it's cloudy it's chilly.
It's even possible to set up your tent there !
And from there you can do two more hikes, we didn't get to do them as altitude kicked in and I got tired, but if you're well acclimatized and well fit do them! We've been told they're amazing.
One of them is 30' - 1h to Artesoncocha lake and the other is 1h30' - 2h to the Frozen lake (Laguna Congelada) at the base of Artesonraju mountain, over 6000m and supposedly the model for Paramount Pictures Logo.
This could be done in one day with no problems if prepared well enough. Between two nights of sleeping at Paron lake.
We will definitely come back to do it in a few years!!

Upon arrival to Paron lake, you will find yourself facing two options for exploring the area:
1. Climb the morraine of North Huandoy, which means hike uphill a moderate-difficult path over the morraine, for about 40 minutes, then, standing 200m above the lake, you can get a 360 degree view of the 16 surrounding peaks.
2. Follow the path on the north shore of the lake for about 3,7km in about 1:45hr, from where you can get a full view of the famous Mount Artesonraju (Paramount's live logo)
By no means hike along the south shore, it could be very dangerous if not fatal.
Booking this trip with Pony's Expediitons in Caraz, will make your experience unique, good English and French-speaking experienced guide on small private groups, daily departures at 8am, cost vary accordingly with group's size, within Soles 50 and 65 per person.

Beautiful lake worth visiting. In my opinion, far prettier than Laguna 69. I did a day visit to Lake Paron which didn't include a hike, but I would've liked to hike here. With the 2 hours I had once arriving with Andean Sky Expeditions, I was able to walk around the edge of the lake (go left inside of right and upwards) which was nice because not many chose this route so I basically had the trail to myself. It is a bit rocky but lovely.
The other option is to head on a trail upwards where you get a great view looking dowards onto the lake and the mountain in the background. I'm not sure how long this takes but I imagine it's less than 2 hours round trip as that's all we had and our guide recommended this option to everyone.
This lake is close to (but less than) the altitude of Laguna 69. Beautiful views!!
There's a bathroom which you have to pay 1 sole for and get toilet paper. There were some people offering snacks but I would bring your own. We also stopped off for snacks and food at a little town before arriving.

Hello, is camping permitted on the other side of the lake? I'm planning to bring my own inflatable boat, and I assume there would be some nice hiking on the far side. thanks

Gracias.

What's the best way to get transport back from the Laguna Parón independently early in the morning?
We'd like to spend a night there, then leave early in the morning to start the Santa Cruz trek. Therefore, we'd like to organise transport early in the morning from the Laguna Parón back to Caraz. Thanks! :)
Written November 16, 2018
Hi there. I'd recommend to plan this with a local tour operator in Huaraz, before you get to Laguna Paron. Otherwise you are risking not to get a transport to Caraz. There are chances that you may join someone else in a Taxi but it's not guaranteed. Fix things before to be safe!

Most likely. The Park doesn't allow dogs (not even on a leash). However, Paron is still managed by the neighboring community, which are not nearly as strict.

Caraz is a quaint little town that was spared from the 1970 earthquake. The people are friendly and if you want to get out of the chaos of Huaraz and enjoy beautiful views of the mountains Caraz is the Place and IntiRumi Inn welcomes you. There is 1 4000 Tumshukaiko Y O ruin within 15 min walking distance of the Plaza de Armas and 5 min away from IntiRumi The museum 1 min from the plaza is pretty cool. It has the oldest mummified baby and beautiful pottery. FREE.

how close can you get to the lake without having to walk. and how far do you have to walk for people that have some disabilities but want to see the lake
Written May 11, 2018
You can drive right up to the lake. The walk up to the shore from the parking lot is not wheelchair accessible, but minor disabilities could manage.
