Drove past the exit 3 time's as the signage isn't great. Once we found it we were very happy we didn't hike the whole way. The first part of the hike looked long and boring. We rented a quad and then hiked the rest. The was wasn't difficult, but it also wasn't easy. Take good shoes with you, and water. We stopped lots along the way and took our time to hangout in nature. The waterfall was beautiful and a lot bigger than I thought. You can take a quick dip, which I recommend. Bring a towel and snacks and enjoy.

Waterfall was beautiful but this hike is not for beginners. Often steep climbs and no trail markers. Often times theres little foot room with a 10 ft drop right next to you. Would recommend but plan and dress accordingly. Takes 2 + hours to do the entire excursion. If you are able to hike from the atv parking area.

Hacienda Merida, where I was staying when I visited, highly recommended by the way, can rent you bikes for the 2.25 mile ride to the entrance or even set you up with horse rentals. The walk is very enjoyable too and takes you past local homes and also a wonderful place to have lunch on the way back called Finca Mystica.

From the entrance, Omotepe Biologica' Estacion noticable by the bright yellow gate on the left hand side, pay the 60 cordoba ($3) fee and head on up. The signs say 3k to the falls but its a bit more. The first section is on gravel road through fruit trees and lava rocks. Once you get to the parking lot you will see the hydro-electric building and the trail on the right leading into the jungle. You eventually work your way across a streambed and up a steep climb at the end till you reach the falls. 130 meters high. Take a dip!

Every guide will underestimate the distance and stamina required. Don't be fooled, it's a steady intense climb.

Getting there: unless you are staying near by, it will take your 45-60 minutes to get to the entrance, road is mostly unpaved and slow. So factor 90-120 minutes round trip. We were in private van, no stops staying near Santo Domingo area.

Entering: admission to the area is approx $2-4 depending on how the attendant is feeling you can afford. ;)

Beginning: easy walk up hill on semi paved road, aprox 20-30min at steady pace. Nothing noteworthy in terms of scenery or uniqueness. If you have bike or ATV, will handle it too. There is a "parking" area you have to leave it just before the walking path begins. Warning, attendant will charge you admission for motorized bikes (I heard as much as $10). But does save you 20-30 minutes.

Trailhead: Walking path starts a steady incline for healthy/fit hiker for approx 45 minutes, tourists with modest experience will take longer (or with kids).

River/stream crossing: After initial climb, You will hits areas of crossing/skipping rocks to pass the river, you may get wet, very slippery and traverse lots of rocks!

Final Stage: It does NOT get easier, it gets much steeper and wet (muddy). It's approx 150Meters of intense incline, some in our group gave up or had to take frequent rest breaks here. Definite test of stamina and coordination.

Reward: finally you to the falls, really nice, cool water, falling from several hundred feet. Great place to cool off and soak. Enjoy the rest and snacks you brought!

Warning: Bring plenty of water or filter device. Hot/humid and vigorous hike. It will take longer than planned.

We read about this place in our travel guide and they skipped fundamental tips, so please read before doing this hike. The travel guide never warned us this was a tough hiking, nor did the guard and the park entrance. Beware! First recommendation: GO EARLY. The guard at the entrance told us the trek was about 2 km from the motorbike parking, and this was false. We left the motobike and walked for about 2 hours and never reached the destination with the waterfall. We started our trekking at 2.30 PM and at 5PM we started to worry night would come upon us in the volcano. We never thought it would take so long and nobody warned us. Bear in mind that, due to volcano height, night arrives earlier there. Second: TAKE GOOD TREKKING SHOES. Our travel guide never warned us it was a tough lane to go up so we walked in our flip flops and almost die of feet sore. Remember, you're in the jungle, there's lots of vegetation and rocks with moist, so please take good shoes. Third: TAKE WATER. I know this is obvious, but we had the unfortunate event of not taking water with us that day, and never thought we would need it so much as the climbing was really physically demanding. We never reached to the top, but we were concerned we would end up alone in the middle of the jungle. Fourth: this is optional, CONSIDER HIRING A TOUR GUIDE. They know the way,and if anything happens, they will definately know how to solve the problem, as they know the place as the palm of their hand. I hope this tips will help you, so you can enjoy the hike and know what you will be facing!

A wonderful reward for an almost as wonderful hike. We hiked as a family of four (kids 12, 10) from Merida, probably close to ten miles round trip. The waterfall is beautiful, and we had the place to ourselves because we left early. Highly recommended to go early and enjoy a similar solitude. Definitely plan to get wet, as otherwise something would be lacking in the experience. DEFINITELY stop at Hostal La Gloria on your way back and see Miguel for some cold refreshments and good stories!

Since our group of nine included a 77 and 78 year old, we chose to ride horses up most of the way to the waterfall. I am probably not a big fan of horseback riding but it was nice. At the point where the horses cannot go any farther, we hiked the rest of the way. It was a nice hike. Not too terribly long but there are some semi steep parts. The waterfall was nice and was very refreshing to dip into.

It’s not even a waterfall but it the little stream coming out of the rocks above, after such a challenging hike which takes around 2 hours you would expect probably something stunning but no. We regretted big time

For us oldies (77 and 74),this was steep and rough, but definitely worth it. The falls are impressively high and you can swim if you wish (we didn’t). We liked the whole island with great views of the two volcanos.

The hike was fun. Not too long but still challenging. I went the first 2 km with the motorcycle, which was already super fun and challenging. Meet some people who hiked that way and were already exhausted.

The waterfall is ok. I am sure you can go in on hot days ;)
