We had a good time learning to kite with Sunkite school: very nice instructors, good equipment and a stunning lake with 2 vulcanoes! If you want to start kitesurfing, this is the place to be!

Ok, this was my inaugural debut to Kite boarding and I decided to try it here on Ometepe since they are right down the street from where I'm living and the school is run by some cool French ladies. I liked the idea of learning from cool French ladies better than a man, because I didn't know how much they need to have their hands on me during the process. (turns out, not that much, so fears allayed!) . Plus I read somewhere it's a good idea for women to learn from other women, so I did that. I can't really judge the teaching because I have nothing to compare it to. I can say that I progressed fairly normally according to what I've read. Am I good? No, hardly. I can barely stay on the board, there are a LOT of things to remember-but I can practice now! It is expensive. And by Nicaraguan standards even more so. However, considering that each class was overseen by at least two different staff people, and there is equipment (theirs) at risk, I can see why not making the prices more accommodating for 'Nica' standards isn't something they choose to do. I read that the prices are very normal for kite boarding lessons throughout the whole globe so I'm not going to say I overpaid. I was safe and the equipment was good. It's not like hiking where all you need are shoes. I love boarding and can't wait to get to try it again. If you've never tried this, don't think you're going to walk away after 3-4 days and be cool like all those really experienced guys you see out in the water who make it look super easy. It takes some practice and time-which adds to your bill, sadly. However, I'm super glad that I did this and started the process here. It is a comfortable island and fairly empty on the beach where we practice so I didn't worry about killing anyone else out there when I crashed the kite into the water unceremoniously. (over and over) The gals both speak English with beautiful french accents. This can make it sort of tough when you have the wind screaming into your ears (good wind is needed for kite boarding) and the waves crashing into you trying to knock you down and you're trying to control a kite that you only first seen an hour ago. There were quite a few times when I don't think I heard correctly and that made it a little anxiety inducing for me-but I wouldn't have given up the opportunity for anything in the world! To be honest, I probably wouldn't have heard someone who sounded exactly like me either-it's loud out there and there are distractions!! If you're wondering if you should try this, I vote yes. And I also vote, don't stop at just one lesson, give yourself a chance to really get better with the kite and try getting on that board. You'll be addicted after that. …

Very nice spot, pretty constant conditions and really nice friendly people at the kiteschool/rental. One tip! -> Also check out the overnight stay which is really beautiful, in the middle of nature and from the same ladies from the kiteschool.

I booked a three day course for beginners and was really amazed by the excellent instructions and precise tasks. The equipment was new or well maintained. The inviorement is good for the first try, because the wind is coming constantly on shore and the waves are not that big. The atmosphere in the school was very nice and friendly and I felt completely welcome there. I would do it anytime again.…
